“Exclusive, serene honeymoon getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2011

My husband surprised me with a week-long honeymoon at this resort and it was perfect. We loved that the lodge had a very exclusive feel to it and that the surroundings were peaceful and quiet. We took advantage of the regular shuttle service to the FS Manele Bay to enjoy the beautiful beach when we felt like it, but it was always nice to return to the Lodge as it somehow seemed more secluded and quieter. Also, the weather and the Lodge was cooler because it was at a higher altitude and that was really nice. We don't golf, but we made use of the free clubs from the front desk to try out the putting range on the grounds (lots of fun even for us amateurs), and also tried lawn croquet. The breakfasts at the hotel restaurant were superb (fresh fruit was so good, best raspberries I've ever had in my life) but pricey! The free coffee and tea before 8am was a nice touch. We had an excellent time, service was signature FS, very personalized and professional. Oh and high tea was also wonderful! We only tried this on our last day, and wished we had done so sooner...

If you're looking for a crowded resort then you are in the wrong place. The Lodge was the highlight of our honeymoon! We spent a week in Bora Bora but it wasn't until we got to the lodge that we really began to relax.

The room had a beautiful wood burning fireplace in it which housekeeping would light for us nightly. The food and restaurants were amazing (I highly recommend trying the dining room). The staff was welcoming and they all knew our names. And finally, the property is beautiful and located a short walk (or shuttle ride) from town and at the base of some fantastic hiking trails. Our days were stress free and I can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Call the hotel; they will gladly describe the rooms to you and help you with your choice.

If you want peace and quiet, this is the place. I was able to read a short book in the walkway between buildings. This is impossible in Waikiki. The shuttle service is convenient so you don't really need to rent a car (unless you want to off-road). I wasn't able to take advantage of the activities offered on this trip, so I'm looking forward to my return visit.

We've stayed here several times, the most recent being July 2011. This is possibly the best hotel we've ever stayed at.

PROS:

LOCATION: It's at a higher elevation and right at the base of a mountain range, so it's very cool. Also (for good or bad....for us its good), you wouldn't know you're in Hawaii. It's made to look like an old english lodge, and the surroundings help add to this effect. Trees, mountains, large pond behind the Lodge....pasture land in front. Just perfect. You can also walk to Lanai City (actually, it's a small town with a homey town square that's home to eateries, small boutiques and a couple grocery stores). All are built to look like homes in an old Hawaii plantation town, so don't expect anything brand new or fancy. But to us, that's all part of the charm.

ROOM: We almost always stay in the Koele Deluxe room, which is a bit larger than the standard rooms and also has a wrap around lanai (balcony for you mainland folks). The beds are heavenly and everything is well kept, clean, modern, but most of all homey, with a character that shouts "old Hawaii." There is a flat screen TV and AC (like I said, all the modern amenities). The room itself is huge. Our favorite part is the built in sitting area right next to the window. Nothing better than to sit there and read while looking out over the magnificent view.

GROUNDS: Magnificent and immaculately kept. Their website has pictures. Better to look at those. Words don't do it justice.

LOBBY: Best we've ever seen. Again, built to look like an old english lodge. Huge, but a homey feel. Lots of comfortable chairs and couches.

STAFF: Helpful, friendly and professional. Outstanding.

CONS:

None.

If you don't live in Hawaii, it will be quite expensive to get to and stay at Koele. But if you can, you have to visit here at least once. Treat yourself!

Room Tip: It's a bit more expensive, but try and book a Koele Deluxe room.

If your more of a pool person the one at the bay was bigger BUT the one on one service at the Lodge was PERFECT.
Snorkeling was spechless at the bay & the dolphins helped too :0)

The Lodge at Koele provides a wonderful balance to the Manele Bay resort. The Lodge is peaceful, cooler, and has a country feel to it. While Manele Bay is much warmer, sunny, and provides the beach experience. Staying at either of these resorts provides full access to the other, with regular shuttles running between the two. For more active guests with kids, Manele Bay works well. For couples looking for a romantic get away, the Lodge is the place to go. The service and quality of both resorts were excellent. However prices across the board reflect that quality. There are very few options to eat outside of the resorts and little to no night life on the island. But if you know that going in, and your intent is to experience a different, more laid back kind of Hawaiian experience, you will not be disappointed.

We just returned from an extraordinary stay at the Koele Lodge. If you are looking for the "old Hawaii, this is it! The lodge has the wonderful atmosphere of a mountain retreat with gorgeous fire places and deep sofas in the main lounge, beautifully decorated rooms and tranquil surroundings. There is old world elegance and style in all the details and we felt truly spoiled by the service which was warm, friendly and courteous all the time.

A big plus for us is that this is a pet friendly hotel. Our little Bichon Frise, Frisbie, was treated as a special guest and needless to say, he had as much fun as we had. Very thoughtfully, a dog bowl and a bed was waiting for him in our room. He loved exploring the grounds and his tail was constantly wagging with all the attention he received.

The lodge has all the amenities one could wish for and there is a convenient shuttle to town, the beach at Manele Bay and Lanaii City. Dining at the Lodge was fabulous in both the dining room and on the terrace. The menus were eclectic and the food and service excellent.

A special thank you to Edith, who went out of her way to make our visit so enjoyable. Thank you for the warm welcome and showing us around and for taking care of all the arrangements. We had a lovely time can't wait to come back!

Many, many mahalos!
