We drove up route 550 with the intention to do a 3 mile hike to the falls. The altitude changes quickly and you start with scenic overviews shortly after you start. Don't miss any of them. The view changes at each one. The view at the top of the drive was hidden behind clouds... but we were still content with the drive. However we did hike the 3 mile Canyon Trail and it was great. Towards the end, take the route that takes you to the overlook... that view is more rewarding than when you get to the top of the waterfall. We did continue to the waterfall though because it is just a short distance from the overview. It was a muddy, steep up and down climb... but that's part of the adventure and well worth it.
