I brought my family to Kauai this past April/May for vacation. My wife and I had visted Kauai and Polihale Beach on our honeymoon seven years ago (2001) and thought it was time to return and introduce our two young children to our favorite place in the world. During our first visit to Kauai, we ventured the dirt road leading to the beach off of Highway 50 in a rented Pontiac Firebird. The ride was extremely bumpy and we had to travel very slowly along the road for fear of being tossed out of the car. However, when we made it to the beach, we found the most wonderful place on Earth. The Beach is very wide and long with very few people on it at any one time. The majesty of the waves coming ashore was a breathtaking site for us. We did notice that the sand was very hot to the feet, so if you go, please, wear your sandals. Polihale is not the beach for swimming or snorkeling because of potentially dangerous undertows. It is just a place to sit in very near solitude with the beach, ocean and the Napali Coast to the north. When we arrived on our family vacation this year, we spent our second full day on the island at Polihale. This time we rented a Chevy Trailblazer and the trip down the bumpy road was much easier to tolerate. Since we had a 4X4, we decided to try to take it on the beach where we saw a few others with 4x4's and pickups parked. Of course we got very stuck in the sand. Fortunately, some very friendly locals came and rescued us by letting about half the air out of our tires and pulling us out of the rut I got the vehicle stuck in. I tried to offer them money for helping us, but they refused money because of the laughter they got from another tourist getting stuck was payment enough for them. I was told that we were the second tourists that day they had to help out. Anyway, after the ordeal, we spent the rest of the day at Queen's Pond at Polihale. The water there was very shallow and the rough ocean waves broke about 40 to 50 meters before the shore. It was a great place for the family to safely wade in the water and enjoy the beach. There simply is no better beach on Earth that can match the beauty and natural majesty of Polihale. You can sense the power of the ocean as the waves roll in. When my young 5 year old son first saw the beach he stood speachless in awe at the expanse of it all. You have beautiful emerald green mountains, torquois blue water and miles of empty sandy beach all coming together at one location. If you are in Kauai, the long bumpy trip to Polihale is worth it!
