We arrived at Lihue airport about noon on June 15, did our check in at the booth at the airport (very convenient - I hope the Wyndham people who have taken over this Pahio resort continue this amenity) Ka E'O Kai is in Princeville, so after getting our rental vans, we were on our way. (11 of us - my son, daughter in law, 4 granddaughters, ages 14 thru 21, my sis & brother in law, one of my brothers & sis in law, and me! I had rented 2 two bedroom units thru RCI for us for the week of June 15 - 22, 1 unit for my son & family, the other for us old folk.
We stopped for lunch at Scotty's on our way to Princeville. Loved the "garage door" windows facing the beach, and when it showered, they simply closed them! Every thing we ordered was good, and I thought reasonable.
Reading the forum pages told me we should shop for groceries in Kapaa, not wait until we got to Princeville, so we did so. We arrived in Princeville about 4, picked up our keys & checked out the units. My son's was a 2nd floor unit, with cathedral ceilings and a large wrap around deck. Ours was a 1st floor unit, which doesn't have cathedral ceilings, and has a patio, the same size as the wrap around deck. While the upper floor is more impressive, the foot print of the units is exactly the same. Yes, the decor is sort of stuck in the eighties, but it was well maintained, and clean, and lovely. The upper units do not have air conditioning, but with the trade winds, don't really need it. The lower unit does not get the cross ventilation, but did have window air conditioners!
While checking out our unit (lower level) I noticed the flooded main bath. (The one for use of guests in living room and 2nd bedroom) I called the number on the phone for maintainance. When 10 minutes had elapsed, and no one had come, i called again. At this time, I was told that all the Pahio resorts share 1 maintainance guy - he has assistants, but I would have to wait. The workers did come to clean up. They asked if someone was showering in that bathroom, and I replied that we were just checking in. They cleaned it up, using the towels in the unit, but could not determine where the water had come from. They promised replacement towels for the ones they used cleaning up the water. I'm sure they just forgot that they promised us replacements, because when they hadn't come for several hours, I called to request them. They arranged for a guy to come clean the carpet in the hall outside the bath.
After he extracted the water that he could, I told one of my guests had a real problem with chemicals, so he said he would not clean the carpet, set up a large fan to help dry, and left. Later, the floor was flooded again, and this time I could see that the water was pouring down the wall from the unit directly above us. I called maintainance again. The maintainance man said he wasn't sure what they would be doing about the problem - I told him they could not move us without also moving my son & family. He told me he would meet with me at 6:30 A M with suggestions. Mean while they asked the people in the unit directly above us not to use that tub. I called RCI, and they called Ka E'O Kai management. The RCI representative assured me that their manager would call me. That call never occurred. Additionally, the maintainance man never showed up the next morning - I waited until 10:30. They had moved out the people upstairs from our unit, and did repairs. Meanwhile, nothing was said to us, and we lived with soaked carpet in that hall for the week. With the humidity in Hawaii, it just wouldn't dry out - the fan was too cumbersome for us to move around in that area, and too noisy. We just sat it outside for them to come collect. I do not know if they tore the wall apart in that bathroom after we left, but I hope so. If they did not, it would be mold heaven in that climate!
The following morning, I had occasion to call maintainance again - we had no hot water. When no one had shown up in 10 minutes, I called them back, and was told they did not start until 8 - this was not explained during my initial call. When they came, they just flipped the breaker, and the water heater started again. Therefore, the next morning, when we did not have hot water again, rather than call maintainance and wait around for hours, we removed the breaker box cover with a dime, and flipped the breaker ourselves. It was necessary to do this every morning. My family in the other unit had no problems, and I remind you there were 5 girls & 1 guy taking showers, washing clothes, etc in that unit! The beds in both units were comfortable, queens in the master bedrooms, the upper unit had a double in the 2nd bedroom, the downstairs unit had twins. The 2nd bedrooms also had its own entrance, if you desired. As other posts have commented, if it were rented alone, it would feel cramped, but as a 2nd bedroom, was fine. The living room was very spacious, and had tv, vcr, stereo. The kitchen was very well equipped, with full size refrig, jennaire range, dishwasher, all your small appliances, plenty of countertop, a breakfast bar and table, and a separate bar with 2 more stools! Our main bath was basic - shower-tub, stool, sink. The closet (good sized for the 2nd br was in the hallway outside this bath, and bedroom. It held the vacuum, broom, iron, ironingboard, etc, as well. The master br was large, and there was enough closet space in the master bath to really live there. It had a separate little room for the stool, a large vanity area, large tub and sliding patio door to another deck/patio which housed the washer/dryer in one closet, and the water heater in another. Great location, because if you were visiting, you didn't have the noisy background. The resort gives you a little box of soap to start washing, and that is convenient. They also provide toilet paper, salt & pepper, dishwasher soap, etc. The units were large enough for us to have family dinners-all 11 of us, without feeling cramped. The hot tub by the club house had a sand pebble bottom, which felt wonderful on our feet, and we gals would take our plastic glass of wine down in the late afternoon/early evening and soak and have our wine. That was very relaxing. The staff at the resort was accomodating. Management isn't. When I was checking out, another woman was at the desk complaining loudly. Management was to have called her the previous evening about an issue, and never did. I am also doing a trip report, cause we had a great time in Kauai, so will get to bore you further!
