This is my 3rd review of this place since 2004. My husband and I have owned at Ka'Eo Kai for 20 years and it's getting a little long in the tooth now. We were hoping that with Wyndham taking over management of the property, that interior decor would have improved (especially in Phase II where we own), but that is far from the case. In fact, we were told at the Wyndham Update we attended (which we did b/c it's the only way to snag decent discounts on dining and excursions), that Wyndham's focus right now is on completing Ka'Eo Kai's sister property, Bali Hai Villas and getting all their units up to snuff. We were pretty much told, point blank, that nothing will be done to improve Ka'Eo Kai for quite some time (no determined amount of time).
All that said, let me tell you about our unit, 14A. Because we own a Phase II, we can only have a Phase II assigned to us, though we can request the better (but not without it's own issues) Phase III. We did request it, but nothing came through and we had to stay in 14A, which is where we stayed in 2004. There were some minor "improvements", but no major ones. The bathroom faucets looked new, all the bedspreads and cushion coverings in the livingroom were new, but the flooring hasn't been changed in years. I'm pretty sure the flooring in the kitchen and bathrooms is original (icky linoleum that has got to go). The cabinets in the kitchen and bathrooms is dark and dingey (also gotta go) and the mattresses in the master bedroom and on the pullout in the LR were absolutely horrible. A TV in the second bedroom would be a nice addition...if they ever get around to it. I absolutely hate the stove/oven. Pretty sure it's the original. Microwave, dishwasher and fridge all look newer. Overall furniture wasn't bad. The place isn't a dive or anything, but still too much of it stuck in the '80's. It was very clean when we arrived, so that's a good thing.
While the resort grounds are still quite pretty and well-kept, the maintenance of some of the buildings are not. Many roofs are in need of replacement. It's quite obvious.
In 2006, the tennis court was resurfaced, but like any other resort amenity, it needs to be maintained, which it is obvious that it is not. While an improvement over the way it was in 2004, it needs attention.
I can't speak to other Phase II units, only the one I was in (with 5 other people....all of us 18 or over), nor can I comment on a Phase III. However, I'm still pretty sure that a Phase III would have been preferable over anything in Phase II.
Honestly, my husband and I are currently giving serious consideration to selling our timeshare. We've gotten our use out of it and would actually prefer to either rent something else in the Princeville area or even stay in Poipu (though the North Shore really is the most beautiful). We really want out of the RCI system. Just don't want to go through exchange processes in general. We still have our 2007 week to use that was earmarked for Maui, but an exchange never came through, even with requesting 18 months in advance. I was told by RCI that there is very little inventory in Maui at any given time. So we just don't want to be stuck in that system anymore. We ended up renting a place in Maui that turned out quite well and it cost less than our maintenance (and some other timeshare fees). And there were lots of choices. I felt much more in control.
As for Kauai itself, go there. It is so beautiful. Still my favorite island. My sister, who had been to Maui before but not Kauai said it best. "Maui is beautiful, but Kauai is spectacular."
I'm not going to recommend specific restaurants, beaches or activities this time, but I am going to recommend a very good guidebook. In fact, I just bought the latest edition (18th) of it b/c I like to stay at updated as possible. It's called the "Kauai Underground Guide" by Lenore and Micah Horowitz. Lots of good suggestions and advice, as well as spot-on directions. And don't forget to pick up all the free media in the airport and at your rental car company counter (excellent maps, coupons, etc.).
Whether you stay at Ka'Eo Kai or somewhere else, above all else, enjoy Kauai. Like us, you'll probably want to return over and over again.
