“Beautiful condo Unit 14G 100% renovated, stunning view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

We stayed in Ali'i Kai II in January with another adult couple and all highly recommend staying in Unit 14G which is a rental by owner. The condo building has a great location in the gorgeous community of Princeville. Close to so many beaches, restaurants and activities. Enjoyed the pool and even the hottub at nights when it was cooler (Ali"i Kai 1 has a pool only). Social atmosphere! We were surprised with a bi weekly condo potluck on Sunday with complimentary Mai Tai's and a local singer on the Ukelele, we were welcomed to join in the fun (may be winter only?).
Unit 14G - second floor
The view is stunning and can even be enjoyed while using the master bath shower! We just wish the balcony was on that mountain side of the unit. The windows are all nice and big though so plenty of opportunity to soak in the view. All of our questions were answered promptly we found the owners to be extremely helpful and really appreciated the extensive list of recommendations provided. All of the ones we tried out we loved. The renovations that were done to the unit are top quality, nothing was overlooked and everything in the unit is new. The owners have great taste for decorating. The unit is quite spacious, all the rooms have plenty of space even with a king bed in one room and two queens in the other. Affordable price for a luxury accommodation. Much nicer and more affordable than the well known hotels on the island and you have all the comforts of home. Loved the guitar for nights we stayed in, the indoor countertop grill for cooking and the bin full of beach gear saved us a lot of money. They really thought of everything. We can't wait to return.

Well maintained resort. The grounds and the pool were in great shape and kept up. The unit was a bit outdated but spotless and fully equipped. We had a unit that had a view of the ocean and the cliffs. But you must ask for that. Most do not have that view. Also, resort has a concierge service that is excellent in assisting you with your activities in Kauai. You can do this ahead of time. The location of the resort is excellent. Would definitely recommend this resort.

Room Tip: request ocean view

Booked the Ali'i Kai timeshare (RCI) over Christmas at the last minute (i.e. early December). Ali'i Kai is located in Princeville, the northern part of Kauai (leeward or wet side). Princeville was developed in the 70's, with a couple of luxury hotels (St Regis, Westin), several timershare developments, Condos (including Ali'i Kai) and private residences. Princeville is on a cliff, so there is no readily accessible beaches (a couple near the St Regis that requiires a hike down, and limited parking).

The Ali'i Kai is actually 2 developments, Ali'i Kai I (Buildings 1-7) and Ali'i Kai II (Buildings 8-14). Ali'i Kai I is along the cliffs, although buildings 1 and most of building 2 are not along the cliffs.

The Ali'i Kai Resort Timeshare (RCI Gold Crown) is in Ali'i Kai II development and has 18 of the 56 Condo's (7 builiding @ 8 rooms). I assume the other 48 Condo's are privately owned/rented. Ali'i Kai Resort Timershare 18 Condo's are scattered among the 7 buildings (8c, 8d, 8g, 9a, 9c, 9h, 10d, 10e,10f, 11d, 11f, 11g, 12e, 12h, 13c, 13e, 13f, 13h). All the Ali'i Kai II buildings (8-14) are set away from the cliffs. Building 13 & 14 may have a view from the upper floors. a,b,c,d are on the 1st floor.. e,f,g,h are on the upper floor. We were in 13c.

The resort is very nice and well maintained. There is a small pool, child's pool and jacuzzi. A nice touch is they have a "honor bin" with beach chairs, mats, etc. which you can use and return at the end of the week. Because this is a relatively small resort, there is no fitness center/room.

I beileve all the condo's in All'i Kai II are 2 bedrooms. The condo has an small washer & dryer and they provide laundry detergent. They do not use a card key system, and use the regular keys. When you close the door, remember that you need to lock the door manually with the key.

Unliess you are planning to stay at the condo most of the time, you will need to have a car. Public transit is not convenient and the shopping center is a good walk (1+ mile) away. There are a couple of activities (luau, South Pacific dinner show) that provide transportation.

Overall, we were pleasantly surprised with Princeville and Hanalei.

Room Tip: Ask for a condo in Building 13

Our family of 5 had a very pleasant stay over Christmas week in Alii Kai 2202. We rented through Oceanfront Realty; they give you the combination to a lockbox at the door of the unit where you pick up the key; easy.

The unit is very spacious and airy, and overall in good shape; we were happy with the primarily mountain view, though many travelers might prefer an ocean view. (You can see the ocean to the side if you step out on the balcony.) This is a 2 BR, 2 bath unit; large bedroom has two queen size beds, small bedroom has one queen size. Beds are firm and comfortable. Living room and dining furnishings are also very comfortable, but starting to show a little wear (some staining and torn fabric). Carpet is in very good shape. Bathrooms are fine but also starting to show a little wear. A real highlight is the kitchen: very large and well-equipped. If you plan to cook a lot, this unit is perfect (there is a food market just a few minutes away). The full-size washer and dryer are also a big plus if you plan to do laundry. (Vacation condos are not for those who want a full-service vacation with maid service and three restaurant meals a day.) You'll find some beach supplies in the unit, including beach towels and one set of snorkel gear. There's a key to the small pool on the grounds; we didn't use it.

In terms of location, Princeville is primarily condo-and-golf-course-land; no local feel, but lovely views and landscaped developments. The small shopping center is very convenient; nearby Hanalei has more eating and shopping options. However, in winter Kauai's north shore beaches are often too rough to swim or snorkel, and in a stroke of freakish bad luck, the hiking trails on the Napali Coast were closed as well. We ended up driving to other parts of the island every day; in retrospect, we would have done well to stay elsewhere. Princeville seems like a great choice in summer for those interested in nearby hiking, snorkeling and golf, and laid-back lifestyle. Don't miss a hike to the stunning Queen's Bath, but heed the signs and don't swim there!

If you want to be on the north shore of Kauai, this location (in Princeville) is hard to beat for its convenience and the price. We stayed in this ocean front unit in late August 2012. It's clean and well equipped. Spacious enough for four people. A couple of things to watch out for:

--The king sized bed in the master bedroom is not super-firm. It caves in the middle.
--The fridge is old and incredibly loud so you don't hear the ocean when you are in the living room. We had to sleep with our bedroom door closed.
--The shower curtains in the bathrooms are moldy. These windows did not seem too clean either.

We booked this unit through Aah Aloha. Well we actually booked 4204. But the agency screwed up (double booked) and we were moved to this unit. Getting the booking done took a number of e-mails and calls to Aah Aloha and was quite frustrating. I would never use them again for any booking.

I had read the reviews and knew the building was rather old so I was not surprised. Actually other than the old bathrooms and missing fixture in kitchen, it was in good shape. I was surprised at how clean it was however. Curls to the cleaning lady as she did a good job.

It was definitely a five star joint but was worth it based on location alone.

Aloha,

We spent two weeks in unit 3-204 and were very happy with our choice. It's a corner unit on the second floor with AMAZING ocean views from the lanai, living room and both bedrooms. It does require climbing a short flight of stairs but the extra height gives you, I believe, a much better ocean view than a ground floor unit. The condo was spotless and well maintained and the bathrooms appear to have been fairly recently updated. The dishwasher and microwave were a bit dated, but worked just fine, and the washer and the dryer in the unit appeared rather new and were so handy to have in the unit. The unit was very airy and spacious and was well stocked with the basics along with some beach gear which we put to good use. It would have been nice to have a few spices and condiments in the kitchen, but we mostly ate out or picnicked anyway, so no big deal. (We always just check what's stocked before going to the grocery store anyway.) The complex overall was very peaceful and quiet and nicely landscaped. There's a basic pool, nothing special but clean. The owner also provided tennis access, but we didn't use that, so I can't speak to those facilities. We rented through the owner on VRBO and it was a perfectly smooth transaction, no problems whatsoever.
