“HBR 4101, 4102, 4103: Superb location but needs some work”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

Our family stayed in all 3 interconnecting units and overall for our purposes this worked. They have spectacular views of Hanalei Bay and the mountains but it appears they are furnished as absolutely cheaply as possible. And it shows. We've stayed in other vacation/condo rentals by owner where there are many thoughtful caring touches, but these units completely lack them. Both these units and the overall HBR could use some TLC. Mostly clean but have some issues. On the plus side, grounds are superbly landscaped, tennis courts are superb. Pool and hot tub looked dirty when we were there. Oh, and the resort's concierge called us to stop by for a "free gift", which turned out to be a single piece of paper with a map on it. Complete waste of time. The resort also hosts a poolside mai tai party which seemed a nice touch but I am convinced the drinks are either completely nonalcoholic or are quite watered down. The walking path down to the beach by the St Regis was not a problem for us, we enjoyed it.

Room Tip: Be aware that some units have much better views than others.

We had the best time at HBR for 3 nights in May. Book through Aloha Condos for a great room that looks identical to the photos. We stayed in room 4324 and it was perfect for 2 people. Price and location can't be beat.

We were excited to stay at the Hanalei Bay Resort, lay by the pool, and relax in the hot tub. The pool was filthy! The resort is under construction and was in disarray. There is no spa, restaurant, gym or bar on the grounds. Parking is not easy. The room is nice and the mountain view is beautiful. Disappointed stay.

Aloha Aquarose67,

We are sorry to hear that your stay was not as you expected, and are worrking on fixing the pool filtration system that shut down during your stay. The resort is in the process of rebuilding our front areas to allow for more of our amenities for all guests to enjoy, and thank you for your feedback. Please feel free to stop by again when on island .

We had a very mixed experience here. We live on Kauai and had great expectations for our two day stay. The first unpleasant surprise as we arrived was to find that we needed shuttle service to and from our room at 8103, as the parking lot is isolated and distant uphill from most of the units. So, either a shuttle or a long uphill/downhill walk to get to and from our car, and also to and from the beach.

Our room was lovely, with a wonderful view of Hanalei Bay, including a beautiful view of a sunset over the bay. We even had pet Nene Geese visit us during the sunset. The room was complete, with all the comforts of home, including a dishwasher and a washer and dryer.

However, the next morning we were unpleasantly surprised with a phone call from the front desk, telling us that we had to move to another room for our next night's stay. So we had to pack up our bags at 10 am, and take a shuttle to our next room at 1551 & 2, a much older pair of units joined together, with only a mountain view. One unit had a kitchen and living room, and the other a bedroom, so we were complete, but it was clear that this combination was much longer in tooth... This change was apparently dictated by the fact that Hanalei Bay Resort is a time share resort, and since we are not time share owners, we had to move to accommodate other schedules, so beware if you are not a time share owner.

The last surprise was that, although the tennis, pool, and beach facilities were very nice, the Bali Hai Restaurant, the spa/health facilities, and and the reception area were not available, as they are under reconstruction. So, if you are planning a stay here, you might want to make sure the reconstruction is complete...

Aloha William H,
Thank you for reviewing your recent stay with us at Hanalei Bay Resort. We hope the quick change in your room did not inconvenience you and your guest(s) during your visit. However, we understand your frustration with this matter and will keep this in mind for future guests, as we do not want to inconvenience anyone while they are vacationing. We also apologize that you were not aware some of our facilities were under renovation. We hope that we can welcome you back once all is complete for a much better stay.

Lovely view, comfy bed and wonderful resort facilities. Will definitely return. Was greeted by a red crested cardinal everyday :)
Hideaways beach was close by. Get a ride 24x7 whenever you want. Staff was very courteous and nice. Nice pools and jacuzzi though I was too lazy to use them. Has a laundry facility on site too.

Hanalei Bay Resort was a great place to stay. We used it as a timeshare exchange This was our fifth time visiting this area and we enjoyed this location. We stayed in unit 2102 that was a ground floor, remodeled unit with mountain views, close to the parking lot and pool. It might have been nice to have a Bay view but we were happy with this unit and easy access. The laundry was also nearby and made it convenient to wash. The unit was a good size 2 bath, one bedroom unit, queen size fold out bed and the kitchen met our needs. We used the patio most of the time for socializing and enjoying the view. The walk down to the beach was easy and we were able to rent beach chairs for the week which we used to take to other beaches. I am sorry I did not bring my tennis racket as the courts were good, some with fantastic views. Unfortunately, the restaurant and gym were still being remodeled. We heard some of the construction noise but it did not bother us. I would have liked to have been able to eat at the restaurant and know it will be nice. The staff were fantastic! The manager, Jim B went out of his way to help us with a car problem. There was a Mai Tai party for everyone and we mingled with other people. The pool was spacious with awesome views. Sunset over Hanalei was dynamite.

Room Tip: Ask for a remodeled unit with a Hanalei Bay View if you don't mind walking from the parking lot.

We had a wonderful stay at the HBR in unit 7203 in June 2013.

First of all, the unit itself- beautifully renovated and well-appointed. The view of the bay was amazing and unobstructed by other condos. The bed was very comfortable. The closet was full of beach gear (everything you could think of- snorkel gear, beach towels, cooler, chairs, umbrella, beach mats, boogie boards, etc). The kitchen is wonderful and well-stocked (bring your own spices). My only complaint is that the 7000 building is a looooong walk from the parking area, and up a steep hill. We didn't mind the walk but others might.

As far as the grounds- you could not ask for a better location for the value. The view of hanalei bay is astounding, and sunsets are amazing from the lanais. The pool is wonderful. Loved the sand bottom hot tub. The grounds are beautiful and well-kept. The beach is a 10-15 minute hike down the bluff but you can call for a golf cart if you don't want to walk. The only drawback is that the restaurant is currently undergoing renovation, so you have to drive into princeville or hanalei to grab food.

We had a group of 20 people stay here for our wedding (each family had a different unit), and everyone was so happy with the location and the value. From what we saw of other units, all were very nice. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views of the bay. Also you can leave your doors open all night and enjoy...
