“Great location/Needs refurbishing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

A magnificent statue and water spouts greet you with a sign that says it all. Welcome to Princeville. The resort at the end of the road is spectacular with small 3 story buildings around to natural stone winding pools and clay tennis courts with gorgeous florals and native birds including Nene geese , chickens and roosters and other strikingly beautiful birds. The floral array included hibiscus, bougainvillea, Birds of Paradise etc. This all overlooked the central volcanos and Hanalei Bay and its beaches. The problem in this resort lies in that it desperately needs refurbishing. Inside our thankfully large 2 bedroom 2 bath with a living room, kitchen and dining area and room to sleep 6 (two in a King bedroom, two in a second bedroom and a Queen sized Murphy bed in a closet in the Living Room), the place was falling apart. Granted they have started rebuilding but it is far from done. We chose to sleep in the King BR because it was larger and was air conditioned but the walls had been ripped from pictures that used to be up and had holes from other objects. The other bedroom was not air conditioned. It had a fan but was hot. The kitchen was more than adequate and stocked aplenty but with a modern dishwasher and microwave but the stove and refrigerator were rusty. The smaller bathroom was great but the one in the King BR had a tub with a large and rusty hole in it. The patio was large with a chaise lounge and some chairs and tables and overlooked the mountains and the Bay. A delight. The restaurant on site burned down 2 years ago and you can watch them build a new one near one of the pools but because it doesn't exist there is no bar or snack service at the pools or anywhere else. For that we bought snacks and drinks at the supermarket in town and carried it to the pool or had lunch out. The service workers were very nice. Princeville is on the North shore and near many towns for restaurants and shopping and beaches for swimming and surfing. Helicopters and catamarans are nearby to sightsee I would go back if they repaired what needs to be done. It was a restful and magnificent vacation.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms nearer the parking area so the hike up is easier. Ask for a room facing the bay and mo...

“A luxurious bit of heaven on a heavenly isle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

We stayed in private condo at the Hanalei Bay Resort and were welcomed by the Resort as a full guest. The resort is 5 star and lives up to it's rating. It is beautifully appointed and kept and the service was impeccable. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a lovely relaxing, pampered stay on the north shore of Kauai.

Room Tip: Building 6 is one with gorgeous views, though all ate nice.

“Great place on the north shore”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

The good: Premises are clean and well kept. Plant life is everywhere, pools are beautiful, staff is friendly. Beach is a 5 minute walk away. Courtesy shuttle will cart you to/from your room.

The bad: Beach is not the best. There are a dozen beaches nearby that are much better. Depending on where your room is, it can be quite a hike from the parking lot (big hills). The pool is beautiful and clean, but the bottom can hurt your hurt (bottom is rough with loose pebbles).

The location is convenient to Hanalei Bay (where good beaches are) but it is quite a drive to the south shore. It took us 2-2.5 hours to reach Polihale beach and Waimea canyon. We only did that one day so it wasn't a big deal. The north shore is the only place I would recommend one stay while on Kauai, and the view from this hotel is amazing.

“Condo 3303”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

Excellent resort with a great location. Our condo had a fantastic view of the bay and great for sunset views. The beach is a way down a hill so be prepared for a small hike back up. Although in need of a bit of a facelift, the condo is generously equipped with surfing, snorkelling and other sport equipment. Due to the fire they are limited in facilities, however they do serve coffee in the morning and ice water all day in the temporary reception area. There are gas BBQ's available for use down at the small pool area. The closest shopping area is Princeville at the entrance to the resort, however, the supermarket is pricey so if you are self catering, stock up at the big supermarkets near the airport. Don't miss out on cocktails at sunset at the St Regis Hotel which is 1 1/2 miles down the road and Infigo's where you will have an amazing meal. Make sure you go over the bridge to Hanalei to access some lovely beaches, restaurants and shops, especially the food shacks that offer authentic Hawaiian food.

“4201-02-03”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

Have rented this unit from the owner three times in past 5 years and again this February. Excellent, great location, clean, well equipped. Don't buy spices or kitchen supplies until you see what is in the unit, its like your own home. Whats missing buy and leave behind for the next guest. Pool and hot tub great, grounds beautiful. Wish the restaurant was open.
We upgrade our travel books each trip and leave them in the unit when we check out.

Rent from owner, you know what your getting, unit has an incredible sunset view, overlooking the ocean. Located on the cliff, near trail to beach and St. Regis. Quiet well located unit.
Have stayed in lots of places in Hawaii and on lots of Islands, this is our choice for Kauai.

Room Tip: Rent though the owners - look at the pics and map so you can see where you will be
