“Perfect 5-day Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2011

I'm an SPG Plat who stayed for 5 free nights; upgraded to Prince Jr Suite with butler. Elegant decor; large, comfortable room, butlers and all staff were as nice and friendly as could be. Clearly STR trains its employees very well. Didn't eat the hotel, nor did we use the pool or workout facility, so can't comment about them. The spa is beautiful too.
6 stars, highly recommend this resort.

We stayed at the St. Regis Princeville for 6 nights to celebrate our 20th anniversary. Having never been to Hawaii before, I researched every hotel on every island and finally settled on the St. Regis for two reasons: luxury and the location.

Price:
If you are on a tight budget or worried about how much food costs, this is not the place for you. You will pay a premium for staying at a premium property, whether it's a cup of coffee or Internet access in your room. We didn't mind the valet parking charge of $20 per day because the other hotel in Honolulu where we stayed also charged that as a resort fee, and we didn't even have a car there. That's said, the St. Regis is expensive, and that shouldn't be a surprise.
Location:
This is the most beautiful spot on the island by anyone's standard. The views of Hanalei Bay with jagged mountains and plummeting waterfalls in the background are gorgeous. I would've been happy just sitting watching the world go by. The resort was a beautiful drive from the airport and was within easy distance to Hanalei for dinner and exploring. Kauai isn't known for its shopping, so don't expect any high-end shops.
Hotel and Room:
The design of the hotel is cleanly modern with comfortable traditional furnishings in the rooms. The open feel of the lobby is welcoming and leads right in to the stylish bar area. The spa is absolutely incredible and worth the high prices. Try the "experience" shower, the steamroom and a massage. Our room was an ocean view and was a comfortable size. We loved the bathroom, with its window allowing us to looking out through the room to the view. Also, the rooms are very quiet - we never heard our neighbors.
Service:
We felt incredibly welcomed, pampered and appreciated by the staff. They knew our names and that we were celebrating our anniversary. We had a delicious chocolate cake in our room upon arrival. Even the Grill staff knew it was a special occasion for us. Our ice was filled each evening, slippers laid out, and the turndown service even put on some island music for us one night while we were out - a nice touch. Loved the valet guys who were quick and very friendly, supplying us with water as we left some (not all) days.
Food:
Room service was delicious, but a little late one night. The Makana terrace was good, but the grill was incredible. I had the signature fish entree - it was spectacular and I'm not a fish lover. We went to the dinner show. The food was good, but the dessert was not appealing. The show was very entertaining, and we sat with two people we ended up befriending and spending some time with during the week. We ate at Bar Acuda twice and loved it. There are no casual offerings except for lunch at the pool, which is too bad. We'd like to see the coffee shop stay open later as well.
Activities:
We didn't want to make a ton of plans and decisions on our vacation, so we did all the planning ahead with help from the concierge, who book almost all our activities: Princeville Ranch Zip and Dip, Blue Hawaiian Helicopter, dinner reservations, spa reservations. Also, don't miss the sunset sail with Trevor right off the St. Regis beach. It was a perfect way to end our week.

This is a big hotel. Service is great, but if things aren't up to par as some reviews have suggested, just ask. We had a problem with our first room and the front desk moved us to a worse room, which was then remedied while we were out at dinner. At least two people inquired whether we were ok with the room and about our general stay via the phone, as well as more in person around the hotel.

Room Tip: Quiet rooms are 800 and up. Rooms overlooking and near the pool are best for families with children.

Despite the unmatched views of Hanalei Bay covered accurately in other reviews, I am not likely to return for an extended stay (would consider a sunset dinner or a couple nights if I were definitely staying in Princeville). Unfortunately there were some real minuses that left us disappointed in our honeymoon experience.

- Hotel Layout and staff density:
The lobby is gargantuan and feels impersonal and un-Hawaiian. Combined with the empty feeling of the space, there aren't enough staff to fill up the St. Regis despite the fact the hotel was "at capacity." We were greeted by a friendly front desk staffer and an aloha butler, the latter of whom we next saw 3 days later. Nor were there enough waiters in our experiences at the Makena Terrace Restaurant or Bar.

- Communication regarding on-site events was on the back page of a paper slid into a thick leaflet of materials on hotel. Have someone show us around, put videos on the TV about the property, slide a schedule with specials and classes under the door - hell, put something up in the lobby! But by all means, TELL ME how to spend time and money in your hotel. Don't hide things!

- Dining:
The staff at Makena Terrace appeared to lose control of the situation when numerous folks showed up for the Sunday brunch and bottlenecked at the entrance. We did have a couple of great waiters for breakfast three of the mornings (shoutout to Dan and Jimmy). But we had rude staff on at least two occasions, including two mornings after the brunch brouhaha when a hostess stressed a bit rudely that she had saved a table just for us (we arrived early and were told to come back, which we did shortly). The morning prior she seated us and ran away with the menus. We also had a rude server the first evening. When you don't have enough staff, at least make the ones you have as great as possible...or give Jimmy and Dan more hours.

- Staff: though Ashley at the front desk responded to our negative comments constructively, I found the staff to be slightly less helpful (with notable bright spots in the bellhops and Kauai Grill, plus the waiters mentioned above) and definitely less professional than my expectations. They were generally very nice but I think I expected more in terms of knowledge and polish.

We stayed here immediately after visiting the Four Seasons, so consider my experience and expectations colored by a PERFECT stay there. We just didn't like it.

Though other readers have gushed, I hope that our experience is helpful to you as you consider your stay. At the very least, make sure you have a solid idea of what's going on at the property and appropriate expectations for the staff. This property is not cheap, so you gotta make it worth it...not obvious it is worth it to stay here if you are just going to desert the hotel for the rest of Kauai every day.

Room Tip: Ocean View rooms had extraordinary sunset views, but you can get the same views from the spacious te...

Aloha,

Thank you for taking the time and sharing a review of your stay at our resort. May I begin by congratulating the both of you on your special day! Honeymoon vacations are an important time in a couple lives as you embark on your life’s journey as one. I’m sorry to know your stay with us did not meet your expectations.

On October 1, 2009 we reopened our doors after a $100 million dollar renovation and celebrated the newly renovated, rebranded St. Regis Princeville Resort. This would mark Starwood’s very first St. Regis brand in the Hawaiian Islands. The vision of the design team was to capture the natural elements by utilizing neutral and warm color tones in décor and furnishings found in the expansive lobby area. We appreciate all feedback shared on our décor.

A Guest Activity Calendar is placed on the desk in every guest room. This calendar lists cultural activities, dining recommendations and community events offered during the week. I’m sorry your calendar was difficult to locate. The Concierge Team is well knowledge in the local area and events offered throughout the community. They are always too eager to offer great recommendations for a unique culture experience.

Thank you for your kind words mentioned for Dan and Jimmy at Makana Terrace. Your kind words are well received and will be shared with their immediate supervisor. While your experience with these servers was exemplary, we missed the mark on several opportunities with inconsistent service and food quality. These issues are well noted and are being addressed.

As we pioneer the St. Regis brand in Hawaii, our ability to evolve and excel includes opportunities of learning and growing from such challenges. We appreciate your comments shared and welcome your candidness.

Should your travels return you to Kauai we hope you will reconsider The St. Regis Princeville Resort.

Warmest Aloha,
Michele Davis

I normally am not the type to write reviews, but am making an exception in this case. My wife and I recently stayed for 5-nights at the St. Regis Princeville for our honeymoon and had the best time ever. The view overlooking Hanalei Bay is breathtaking and can't be beat. I also prefer the north side of Kauai and the location of the St. Regis is therefore perfect. The staff was friendly and accommodating and made our stay wonderful. We went to Maui from Kauai and stayed at the Four Seasons Wailea. The Four Seasons was great too, but we missed the St. Regis!! That's how awesome it was...

The pool was a wonderful size with a great temperature. It was filled with loud, misbehaving children. It was difficult to relax. There was too much non-parenting. The food was overpriced and terrible. My well done burger at the pool was raw in the middle, the bottom bun was millimeters thick due to a soaking of grease, the swiss cheese consumed the onions, and it was 26 dollars. The people were wonderful. The employees were the stars of the hotel. I would not stay there again.

Having just returned from our 4 night stay at St. Regis Princeville, we were hugely disappointed with the resort. First and foremost, it has to do with cleanliness. Our bedroom window was so dirty that we couldn't look out the window. What's the use of oceanview room if you can't look through the window? Despite my request to housekeeping to clean the windows, it was never addressed. I won't even describe the water stains and dirty grout in the bathroom. I might have expected this from a 2 star hotel, but not from St. Regis.

Service was another hit or miss. Some of the staff were very friendly - Matt who greeted us at the door and Mike at the poolside were genuinely helpful and wanted to make sure we had a great stay. The others, especially at the Makana Terrace, seemed perfunctory, at best. A couple of times we had to send back our plates because either pancakes or omelet were not fully cooked. When we are paying $34/person for breakfast, it'd be nice to get cooked food with a smile. If we get some variation in the buffet menu, that'd be even better.

I urge others to watch their bill carefully. Upon our return, we received another invoice for charges that we did not incur. That's the last thing one wants to do after a vacation - dispute charges!

For our next trip to Hawaii, we're staying with our tried and true - Four Seasons - where cleanliness and great service are just foregone conclusion.

Our family of eleven (7 adults and 4 children) totally enjoyed our five night vacation at the SR. From the time we checked in to the time we departed for Maui, the experience was one that we will always cherish and remember.

Our four grandchildren were immediately won over by the staff when each were given their own SR stuffed monk seal at checkin. That single jesture alone was worth the cost of our stay.

We dined at Makana Terrace for their Sunday brunch and another time for dinner. We found the menu offerings for each to be top notch and worth the money.

The views are beyond comparison. The accommodatations live up to the five star rating with the entire propery being top rate. Just remember that this is a five star property so while there, just hang loose, chill and enjoy the beauty of this wonderful resort and don't forget to bring your wallet....

We found the entire staff to be very accommodating; each performing at a very level of service. A special tip of the hat and appreciation to Makana, Jeris, Matt and Chelsea who we found to go well beyond expectations in making our visit so enjoyable. Mahalo.

My wife and I eagerly look forward to our return to the SR in 2012 as we do each year....

Aloha
