wife and i were looking for our first vacation spot with 1 year old. needed a place that had beach, pool and nice sized rooms so we could all fit comfortably. the westin princeville exceeded most of our expectations.
1) travelling with baby
how could they make it any easier? when booking, we told them we had a baby. they arranged for us to be on a first floor (no wheeling stroller up in elevator) and delivered a combination of crib, high chair and diaper genie. AND they called to ensure that it all arrived properly. (in fact, they called after every request to make sure it was handled well, efficiently...)
2) the property
can you say gorgeous and lush? fantastic views, sculpted, not a single piece of trash anywhere. multiple pools around the property including a kid pool with slide and one adult only pool. other reviews had commented on the gas grills. i thought there might be four or five. there were at least four pods of four or five grills. amazingly thoughtful. plus in your room there is a set of grill tools.
3) choosing your room
when we arrived, our room was not ready. the front desk offered to put us in one that was, but suggested we wait. a) thanks and b) wow! we had a view of the golf course next door, plus roosters/chicks and the ocean beyond it. this leads to me one of my FEW cautions about the resort: choose your room carefully. we were lucky to have an unobstructed view, but you could easily have a view one of of the 7 buildings which would be a bummer.
4) the room itself
we reserved a 1 bedroom suite. wow. furnishings were high end from the heavenly bed to the linens to pretty much everything you could ask for -- tvs, dvd, bose stereo, great furniture... and it was all perfect for our little man to run around in. the room was approx 800 square feet so plenty of space to get lost in. on the few occasions that it rained, we luxuriated in our room. Note, the kitchen is fully furnished, but barely. you'll get no salt/pepper and the dish set is basic.
loved the "service express" direct dial on the two phones. answered instantly and so courteously. we had an issue where we asked for the bed sheets to be changed and the entire room was cleaned except for the bed. called service express and voila! fixed within five minutes.
6) the beach?
there is no beach at the westin. you can drive 2 miles or take the shuttle down to the St Regis (or walk). you can use the st regis beach fully and easily. and some might even sneak into the st regis pool (which you are not supposed to do). is it a bummer not to be at the beach? well, yes, but it's so easy to get there (and to annini beach just 10 minute drive away) that we did not care.
7) if you get a resort credit...
we booked with amex and got a $500 resort credit. upon checking in we were informed we could use it for services and food (no booze) at the westin, st regis and another hotel (forget which). upon checkout we were told No, only at the Westin. We strongly objected and the credit was given. so check your bill carefully.
the westin princeville does not serve breakfast. be forewarned. if you opt to not have your room serviced, you'll get a $10 voucher to be used for food on property same day. so we used it for Starbucks and breakfast sandwiches (well more than $10) in the Princeville Market on property. The cost for groceries in the little store is prohibitive. Milk was as valuable as gold with an infant and we were forewarned to buy it (and pretty much any groceries) off premises. Some suggested walmart or costco in lihue. there is a foodland less than a mile away from the property, a market in hanalei and a organic market in lahaina. definitely buy your food and items off property unless you have to or want to spend big bucks. we had food at the pool 3 times and it was basic pool food delivered reasonably promptly for pool side prices. (very nice pool and pool wait staff, too). oh, at lunch i saw people bringing their own wine. better than $8 a glass of pinot.
overall, a huge thumbs up. just be forewarned that it's not at the beach and choose your room carefully.
