“pros and cons”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

Let me start by sharing the middle of our vacation was great. We had a wonderful one bedroom suite with a lovely ocean view. Now..the pros and cons
Pros:
*beautiful grounds
*lovely room if you can get bldg 7, facing the ocean, bldg 6, or ocean view bldg 5
*great kitchen with utensils
*multiple places to grill
*free valet parking
Cons:
*When we arrived in the evening we told them that we wanted to dine downstairs, but we had frozen food and my insulin and needed to put them in the refrigerator. They told us not to worry, that they would put everything in our room fridge. After dinning, we noticed that our luggage and gray bins with food and insulin were still outside the lobby. Upon inquiring, they said that all the things that needed refrigeration were in our room already. They were not. When calling the front desk, they said.."Oh, we kept it here in our fridge." That was not true...When we finally got our things, my insulin was warm, the ice pack had melted and our frozen food was not frozen anymore!
* The next day, we saw that our room balcony had no view and overlooked the parking lot and a fan..yuck! We requested another room..They offered a room in another bldg they said had a partial ocean view.At first I said no and then called back and said.."well it is better than the one we have so we will take it." They shared that they would send up a bellhop to move us. We packed up everything only to be moved to a room that was worse than the one we were in. So...we moved back..meanwhile..this was our day 2.
*After going to the front desk and sharing with one of the concierge, the manager overheard and worked with the front desk person to move us to another room on day 3. She also said she would wave the upgrade cost of 50$ a day to a one bedroom. One day 3 we asked if we could just pack up and they move us to the new room so we could start to enjoy our vacation, but the front desk person said we would have to be in the room when they moved us..so..they we were yet again, at 1pm on the 3rd day moving our room
* Day 5..last day of our vacation, I decided to take a jetted tub bath. As I was sitting in the tub running water, I noticed something blk with wings coming out of the filter! There was a myriad of what appeared to be dead mosquitoes pouring out of the filter! I contacted the front desk and they offered me a breakfast sandwich! When the maintenance person came, he took pictures as well. A second maintenance person came and stated that," Oh it looks like someone did not wash off and I think it only seaweed." That is when I exclaimed," Does seaweed have wings?? Does seaweed have wings??" They did take another $100 off after I raised sand with the front desk.
Whew...too much work for a vacation...we are gold members and usually love to stay at Starwood resorts, but this did not live up to our expectations.

Room Tip: ask for a room in bldg 6, or bldg 7 w/ocean view or bldg 5 with ocean view.

Aloha blglbrgrl,

Mahalo for choosing The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas and for your loyalty in the SPG program. We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your one-bedroom island-view villa and that much of your vacation was enjoyable. However, we are sorry for the challenges you had in your arrival experience, particularly with regard to your luggage. Our standard is to store grocery items immediately as per requested by our guests, and we are sorry for this lapse in service. As for your room location, due to all of our villas being categorized as Island View, we do our utmost to accommodate requests for room location based on availability, and are happy that our team was able to find a great solution for you. Please accept our deepest apologies for the inconvenience regarding debris in your tub prior to your departure. We are thankful that we had the opportunity to address this rare issue during your visit. As your stay is atypical of the relaxing Westin Princeville experience the resort is known for, we are pleased the General Manager was able to connect with you personally regarding your feedback. It is comments like yours that will help us to continue to elevate the guest experience at The Westin Princeville and we thank you for taking the time to share.

Used SPG points to book a five night stay (fifth night free) for a studio - our stay got off to a great start when we were upgraded to a one bedroom suite in building 5. The lanai faced the parking lot on the first floor but we weren't complaining as the extra room was very much appreciated for our family. We had hit Costco after arriving in Lihue and we saved some money by eating in almost every day - full kitchen (stove, microwave, full-size refrigerator, all the cooking utensils you need, etc). In addition there are grills available for use spread among the resort (first come, first serve - used it once to grill some beef and it couldn't be easier).

The main pool, the restaurant (Nanae) and the fitness center were close and it was easy to find parking next to our building ($13 per day). Besides the main pool, there are two smaller pools near buildings 6 and 7 which overlook the bluff.

Service was excellent from everyone at the resort - maids, FD, restaurant, bartenders all were smiling and ready to serve. When we checked in, the FD asked if we wanted a roll-away bed and sent one to our room free-of-charge. Housekeeping did a great job each day cleaning our room while we were gone - the rooms come with a washer/dryer so it was great to have a chance to wash all of our clothes before heading to Poipu (we packed less knowing that we had the use of a washer/dryer).

As another example of a good experience that we had, they offer everyone a welcome gift which was a tote bag - you can pick up some additional benefits if you listen to a timeshare pitch but we weren't interested (host was gracious and totally understood ). However, my wife noticed that some other folks had received a very nice canvas tote bag and asked about that. She was told that those were for the timeshare owners and not SPG guests, but she asked if she could purchase one and the FD manager said that she'd look into it. Next morning, got a call to come down and we got a bag (no charge). It was a small thing but very much appreciated.

We ate at Nanae once during the Sunday Brunch Buffet - $34 for adults (we didn't get alcohol which would have been $5 more), $15 for children and the food was excellent. They also have a market onsite where you can buy meat for grilling and other food/drinks - Foodland is very nearby but if you're feeling a bit lazy, it's nice to have a convenient option in the resort.

Being on the North Shore - it rained everyday but mainly in the form of cloudbursts as it was fairly dry the majority of the time. The clouds were actually sort of welcome as it kept the temperature down a few degrees. We did take the free shuttle to the St Regis and checked out that hotel's beach - great views but if you want to do any type of snorkeling/swimming, there are other much better beaches on the North Shore.

They do have a lot of roosters/chickens/geese that hang out everywhere - the roosters didn't bother us although i wouldn't leave your window open at night as they start crowing before the sun comes up.

We had heard some stories about how this property wasn't a typical resort but more of a timeshare - it is a timeshare, but the service was top notch all the way around and we would not hesitate to come back the next time we're in Kauai.

Aloha GoBears86: We are delighted that you and your family had a wonderful stay with us. The one bedroom villa does offer spacious accommodations with almost 800 square feet of living space with the full kitchen and large bathroom. The villas and amenities are designed to provide you with a home away from home and we are happy that you found the full kitchens, washer/dryer and extra space convenient. We are also glad you had a chance to use one of the 20 BBQ grills that are located throughout the resort for our guests to use. Nanea Restaurant and the Princeville Market on site also offers different options should guests want to dine out or have a quick grab and go meal. Thank you for recognizing the staff and for letting us know that you had a great guest experience staying with us. We look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit to Kaua’i. Mahalo!

This hotel had great service- from
Concierge, housekeeping and both restaurants on the property. The gym was nice. The rooms have washers and dryers (which is a plus) and they provide detergent and dryer sheets for one load. The food at the restaurants was delicious. I found the rooms to be okay- saw a bug so wasn't so keen on the room. There were BBQ grills on the property that was nice. One thing I believe would have gone a long way was a flower lei when u check in and a welcome drink. (Something it's sister property the St. Regis does). Westin guests can use the beach at the St.. Regis but not the pool. There is shuttle service between the two properties. I recommend getting drinks at the St.. Regis (outdoors) - amazing view. I also recommend snorkeling at tunnels beach- one of the best places with coral. I recommend eating at hanalei gourmet cafe.

This was a terrific property. I am a Starwood property owner, so we were given an ideal location with excellent ocean views. Apparently they give the owners preferential treatment for location and special request. The property has three pools, a market and a nice restaurant and a couple bars. It is very family friendly, offering kitchens in the rooms and barbecues for public use. If you want service, they offer that too, with daily housekeeping, room service, and dining.

The location is excellent - On the water at Princeville. Beautiful views of ocean, golf and mountains nearby. Princeville is a very nice, upscale area. There's golf, markets, restaurants, and plenty of other things to take advantage of. The St. Regis is the sister property, and guests of the Westin have access to the St. Regis property. The St. Regis is off the charts - nice. We had a meal there and it was literally the best meal I've ever had.

The only drawback to the Westin, (and the main reason it's not a 5), is that there is NO beach access from the property. You have to go somewhere else to hit the beach. The St. Regis has a beach and as a Westin guest, you have that access free of charge. They offer free shuttle back and forth, all day.

We stayed at the Westin for our one week visit to Kauai. The Princeville/Hanalei area is for those that prefer less populated and more natural Kauai settings. The hotel rooms are actually condos of varying sizes. We had a one bedroom with washer/dryer - very convenient as you don't have to bring as many clothes on your trip. Hotel was very clean, and staff worked hard to keep it that way. I liked that this property is smoke-free everywhere. Unfortunately, some guests thought it was ok for them to smoke in the parking lot. It was not. The concierge, Roxanne, was very helpful in helping us book activities. You can even charge them to your room when you book through the concierge so you get SPG points. I did reach out to the hotel prior to my visit via social media but got no response. I got a call from Roxanne one week prior to our visit with an offer of assistance. This Westin doesn't appear to be current with social media so expect to use the phone or talk face-to-face. We got a package that included breakfast at the Princeville market every morning. We didn't return after the first morning as the food service was very slow (30 min to get food for 2 people) and the quality wasn't great. The dinner restaurant, Nanea, was very good - better then I would have expected for a hotel restaurant. I used the spa at the St. Regis (free shuttles from Westin) as the massages at the Westin are given in outside cabanas. I thought it was too hot and sticky to get a massage outdoors.

My wife and I were visiting Kauai to get married and we chose to stay at the Westin for 9 nights during our stay. I was immediately impressed with the staff, the grounds, the room, and the level of service provided. We were treated very well - the resort even gave us a free bottle of champagne on our wedding night! The place is quiet with a very calm vibe. We especially loved the smaller pools that are tucked away from the busy main pool. I would stay at this property again in a heartbeat! It is definitely one of my favorite Starwood properties I have stayed at.

Loved this property Utilzed the grills for many a sunset dinner. Cant wait to get back. Pleasant pool and hot tub options. Close proximity to beach, snorkle and some of the best hiking we have ever done. Mixed group on site, yes lots of children, but well behaved.

Dear jclark1031: We are happy to hear that you loved the resort. The 20 BBQ grills that we have throughout the property provide our guests with the option of gathering with friends and family to enjoy a nice casual meal. The Princeville Market at the resort also makes it convenient by offering pre marinated steaks, fish, chicken and vegetarian options that make it even easier for guests to enjoy the BBQ grills and dine outdoors or taking the meal back to their villa to enjoy. The North Shore of Kaua’i has a number of great white sand beaches and our staff will provide you with a Beach Guide that outlines the nearby beaches, activities and facilities at the beaches, water safety information and driving directions. We look forward to welcoming you back to The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas on your next visit to Kaua’i. Mahalo!
