“We'll return”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

After a week in Poipu, we moved north for a week at the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas. We found it to be much more scenic than we expected from the reviews we had read. The landscaping is lush and colorful throughout. The main pool area offered adequate shade and a lovely view of mountain or sea. One of the “quiet” pools had an even prettier vista. Subtle and relaxing Hawaiian music is piped into these public areas during the day. On a couple afternoons we opted to drive to the St. Regis Hotel (free valet parking) to use the beach there. Very nice! Also, as you’d expect, VERY expensive food & beverage service, which at the Westin was more reasonable.

We saw lots of grills on the property, and a convenient grocery store made this an attractive option for lots of families. We prefer to dine out. Nanea, on-site at the Westin, was actually our favorite dining experience in the Princeville area.

Our unit was a studio in building 7, with a view of the Kilauea Lighthouse peninsula. Lots of birds to watch. We enjoyed the friendly pairs of nenes. The accommodations were spotless and spacious enough, although the very tiny kitchen sink was difficult to use.

In October our weather was near perfect. Rain showers at night or early morning gave way to lovely afternoons. We will return to this resort on another trip.

This was our first stay at this timeshare property. We found it to be a beautiful and pleasant place to stay. We did not have much interaction with the staff but found those who we did interact with friendly. We would recommend that you go down to the St Regis to see the beach and look out at the bay from the high cliffs. We like to explore the area when we go on vacation. We found the property a long way from the things to do on the southern part of the island. Traffic was nasty during the rush hours times. I wish that they would have had some local entertainment during the evening. Overall it is a nice place as are all of the Westin properties we have stayed at.

This visit, our first return to Kauau since a visit 42 years ago, revealed a hidden gem. This was just a piece of our six week vacation in the island. The Westin exceeded our expectations in several ways. Firstly was the tranquility of the location - very relaxing. Situated on a cliff above the ocean, surrounded by beautiful golf courses, walking in the morning was a delight. I tend to be an early riser. My routing was to go up to the fitness facility, an excellent facility open 24/7, do some exercises until nearly sunrise. I would then go down to the cliffside pool to read a book and watch the sun come up. The sound of the surf fit in beautifully with that. Then it was back to the condo for a light breakfast with the wife, who by this time was enjoying coffee and a biscoti on the deck, taking in the sunrise, the view, and all the birdsong.

The real golden nugget was a colloboration with the St Regis Resort in Princeville. A shuttle was provided on an hourly basis until 8 PM that allowed us to use all the St Regis facilities, with the exception of the pool. We could take lunch, eat dinner, do most anything and charge it to our room at the Westin - very cool! Just befor the tsunami we had a beautiful happy hour overlooking Hanalei Bay. Being high ground neither The St Regis or the Westin had any worries about the tsunami.

We stayed in a one bedroom villa in building 6, with a lanai view of the adult only infinity pool.
The unit was very nice, love the heavenly bed and shower. Beautiful landscaping. There are two very nice grilling areas near the pool. We were unhappy with the gym facilities. Not enough equipment for a resort of this size, about a dozen cardio stations, packed by 6:45am and in constant use until 9:30. The biggest problem are the native geese, which roam the property and you constantly need to what out for their droppings. They are in the pool and all around it. We asked management to have someone clean in the afternoon. The resort has access to the beach thru the St Regis resort but the views are beautiful. We prefer Maui but enjoyed are stay.
How can anyone not like the Hawaiian warm air and water!

Room Tip: Book early, as soon as you know you are going.

Our experience here almost exactly paralleled that of Bounder04: great rooms, wonderful beds, but a not-so-pleasant attitude from the staff and the resort owners.

If you go on vacation for pure relaxation this is a wonderful place. Clean and extremely spacious rooms to mill around in. Excellent pools to lounge beside. A full kitchen so you can keep your tummy constantly happy with snacks and drinks from the full-sized fridge, cooktop, and microwave.

If you go on vacation to see the sights then you're out of luck here. There are a few interesting attractions nearby (excellent public beaches, sea caves, botanical gardens) but the list of quality restaurants runs to three or four, the nightlife is non-existent, and even the nearest movie theater is an hour drive away. This place really is for the lay-at-the-pool, Perry Como crowd. We're in our 40's and we were easily among the youngest people on the property.

The big downside though, as Bounder04 pointed out, is the staff. We've also been to the sister property on Maui and found the staff there exceedingly friendly and engaging. Here on Kauai the exact opposite is true. No "alohas", no smiles, no attempt at all to make us feel welcome. All of the amenities - the store, the restaurant, and the towel hut - are clustered in the main building and are a pretty good walk from the buildings and the smaller pools, It's just not a friendly and convenient place. It was a BIG change from the Maui property.

The worst, however, was the concierge. We were contacted by the concierge about a week before arrival with a bubbly and enthusiastic message and told of all the wonderful things she could do for us. All of that changed, though, once she figured out that we weren't interested in purchasing a time-share at the property. After that we were like second-class citizens to her. If she couldn't make a commission off of us then she didn't see any need to even talk to us anymore.

This was also the case when interacting with some of the time-share owners. Many were friendly and helpful with us. Others - once they found out that we were "guests" instead of owners - treated us like trespassers. We even had one women complain to the front desk that us "mere guests" were using the small hot tub near our building instead of the larger main pool. The front desk sent out somebody to explain to her that all facilities on the site are open to everyone - owners and guests alike. That sent her huffing away in a tiff about how owners should have "private" facilities just for themselves. I've honestly never seen anyone so rude as this woman in all my life.

So overall I have to give it a less than average total review. It's a very nice property. The rooms are gorgeous, and it's North Shore Kauai. That much is spectacular. But unless you enjoy just hanging at the pool with snotty octogenarians there's not much else to recommend the place. The staff certainly doesn't win high marks and the owners would rather you just didn't come. We'll be making those stuck-up owners happy and staying away in the future.

Cheers,
Big

Aloha Big B,

Mahalo for taking the time to share your experience at The Westin Princeville and your kind words regarding our rooms and facilities. We are pleased that our staff was able to rectify the situation you experienced with an owner regarding usage of our facilities, as all of our guests are important to us. However, we were very disappointed to read of uncomfortable interactions you had with some of our staff as this is not indicative of our standards. We truly believe that all of our guests should be treated with the aloha that the islands are known for, and encourage you to reach out to us so we may discuss your experience. A private message has been sent to you with contact information. Further, our team has been alerted to your comments so we may continue to improve our guests’ experience and share our aloha. Thank you for choosing The Westin Princeville, and we hope to have the opportunity to exceed your expectations in the future.

We loved our stay at this hotel! We had a studio and it was perfect for my husband, toddler and I. My son loved the children's pool! There's a playground and public library within walking distance as well as a supermarket called Foodland. There are lots of nene goose and chickens throughout the property which entertained my son a ton. This is a great family resort! The laundry and kitchen were so great! It'll be hard not to stay at a villa in our next vacations!

Room Tip: We stayed in building 6 which is far enough from the pool not to hear noise from it but near the par...

Prior to staying at the Westin Princeville we spent a week at the Westin Villas in Maui. We found marked differences in both properties and it appearred that the attitudes were different also. The staff at Maui greeted us everytime no matter what time of day with an aloha. The staff at Princeville bowed their heads upon passing us and said nothing. This did not make us feel very welcome. The resort itself is beautiful with many flowers and great for those who wish to do nothing but lay around the pool. Everything is a drive away including the beach (you can take a shuttle to the St. Regis to use their beach). As stated in other reviews the Bar closes early (7pm) and the only restaurant does not serve breakfast. As for the grounds, we had garbage outside our lanai for three days until we told housekeeping. We also found a "dope pipe" outside our lanai and notified security who collected it. With all the "landscapers" on the property one would not expect to find these things but I guess it goes back to the attitude previously mentioned. The pools were very nice however there was alot of bird droppings on the pool decks that you had to avoid. In the 7 days we were there the pool decks were never washed down or cleaned. The complimentary coffee in the room was great the first day however when we asked for more for the additional days we were staying we were told it would cost us a $1 per package. We were not charged this in Maui. Parking is far from some buildings (we were in building 3, no parking nearby) and lacks enough handicap parking for those disabled. So much for the negative now the positive. The rooms are outstanding and well equiped. We slept without distraction and even the chickens did not bother us. You are in Hawaii, even with the negatives it is a great place to be. I would recommend this property to those who wish to do nothing but relax.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms by the "quiet pool" building 2 and 3 provide easy access to the less us...
