“great time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2006

We just returned from the plantation resort and had a really nice time. I booked a room thru Expedia not realizing after reading all these posts that there could be such a difference. My two daughters, 18 and 15, and I ended up in building #39, room #332 on the third floor. The owners really take care of it although I did see it was up for sale. It was really very nice and clean. We kept the slider open at night since we were not on the ground floor and slept very well. The roosters crowing in the morning didn't bother me at all. The beach was maybe a 5 minute walk away at most and the grounds were so beautiful. I loved the location at Poipu beach. I plan on going back next year with my husband. I think I will check out renting straight from the owners next time. I do think it is more of a family resort but we truely did have a great time there.

Our family of four checked in to this property anticipating an ocean view room and an action-packed week. Having arrived from the Big Island, where we had a wonderful resort experience, this place disappointed from the get-go. Our custom vacation was booked 9 months ago, and we were put at the very back of the property. Apparently, you pay a premium price for an ocean view so that you can listen to all the road noise on Popui Rd., peer through a large tree for a sliver of ocean, and hear every auto and service truck entering the property on the east side. At 10:30 at night, we were subjected to street sweepers, tow trucks, and people coming home and setting off their rental car security alarms. Kids on the lawn at 6:00 a.m. playing soccer outside our room made an alarm clock completely unnecessary. Then there was the line-up outside our lanai for use of one of the few grills (great way to meet people?!). But what frosted us the most was the insolent and abrupt attitude of the staff. They looked at us like we were nuts when we told them we wanted a different location, and of course nothing was available. The vacation packager was able to negotiate a discount, but when you've been planning for two years, that's little consolation. The concierge at this facility is just a front for an activity sales desk - beware- these people don't know what they are doing and they will waste a lot of your time. And if you happen to be visiting for the first time, you'll get the "Well, it's always been done this way and you should know that" line. They can't even get a dinner reservation done, so don't trust them with anything really important. And forget about the pool; it's so far from the ocean front that you'd need to plan a day trip. Oh ya , it closes at 6:00 p.m. We loved Popui beach and the island, but we hated this property.

We booked our stay at Castle Kiahuna through Hotwire which advertised it as "beachfront, 1 bedroom suite." When we arrived -- we were placed in building 41 -- the view was of the Marriott behind our room (parking lot view) and also had Poipu Road street noise. We spoke to the manager, who claimed that Hotwire had booked us in a "Garden View" -- which was not our selection. We had thought we were getting a "beachfront" based on Hotwire's promotion -- there was no mention of a "garden view" room. We were instructed (upon arrival)by hotel management to call Hotwire to clear up the problem. We called Hotwire our first day on site and were told that they had no control over where the hotel placed us and that in fact, they (Hotwire) did not specify that we were getting a "garden view" room. Note: The room type was not mentioned on our Hotwire confirmation. We then proceeded to speak to the manager who was most uncoopeative, unapologetic or willing to assist in a room change. He only offered to upgrade to an "ocean view" for a price (it became our problem and our expense). He was very rude and unwilling to accept any responsibility. He also gave some lame excuse that their computers were down so he couldn't look at how it was advertised on Hotwire. It would have been considerate to say the least, if he had acknowledged that the room package was advertised incorrectly on the Hotwire site and that he would look into changing it to avoid further confusion by future guests. Overall, we were very unsatisfied with Hotwire's response and the response of the Hotel Manager. No one accepted any responsiblity for the misleading advertising. Also, note that the pool is located at a tennis club across the street from the hotel -- not on grounds.
Consequently, it was extremely disappointing to spend 9 days in a "hotel view" room when we expected to be in an oceanfront room. Interesting to note that when we returned home, Hotwire sent us a survey to review how we felt about stay in our "oceanfront, one bedroom suite." What's up with Hotwire and the Castle Kiahuna Plantation and their "package" deals?

My husband and I just returned from a weeklong stay in Unit 443, Building 42. The condo itself was in good to fair condition, just the carpet showing some wear. The main concern was the location of the unit and also the hotel staff.

We were working with a tight budget, having just been married. We booked online at Hotwire, got what we thought would be a great deal....A week after our booking we found the the hotel rating had recently been downgraded by Hotwire from 3.5 to 3 stars. We took a small credit of Hotwire bucks and hoped for the best (it was too late now to rebook elsewhere- spring break rush).

Turns out, we booked a gardenview room, this is the hotel's lowest room grade. We weren't able to find out the exact location on the property until just before our arrival. There is NOT (although the office staff will tell you there is) a map of the grounds avaible online at the hotel site, you will need to call and request to have it emailed to you. We then found out that there are three buildings of gardenview rooms, Building 40,41 and 42. These buildings are located between the only main street running through the Poipu area (Poipu Rd.) and another property. There is heavy traffic on Poipu Road all hours of the night. Because the units are not equiped with air condition, there is no relief from the ever present sound of constant traffic. To make matters worse, our bedroom window was about 30 yards from the road!

Prior to our arrivial, we made arrangements with the hotel to upgrade our room for a small fee. Upon our arrivial we were told that the room had been given to someone else. The only alternative we were offered was about $204 additional/night and a take it or leave it attitude! After 24 hours of travel, we decided to take the room and deal with it in the morning.

We contacted the front desk and hotwire daily the first 4 days of our stay. We would be offered a room (for an additional fee), walk over to take a look at it, decide to move, only to be told they had made a mistake - it wasn't available. The general attitude and lack of caring or understanding from the staff made the ordeal even more difficult. This was to be our honeymoon, we wanted to relax and enjoy some quiet time together. We were offered a refund of the remainder of the stay by Hotwire, but weren't able to find an alternative in our price range (that springbreak rush again).

The beach on the property is lovely! Although the Activity Hut is staffed by teenagers who are too busy talking on the phone to answer your questions about snorkel gear or when they'll have more towels. Some of the garden areas are beautiful, the cactus area seems overgrown and in need of maintenance. The pool is nice, but located across the street with the tennis courts. You need to check in at the pro shop for towels, again depending on the staff they may be too busy doing something else to help you out.

We would NOT recommend this property. Not only due to the room location and noise, but also the staff.

If you are considering the property, be careful! We recommend calling for a property map and pick the specific unit based on location of the building. Buildings 16, 18, 37 and 39 may also have the same noise problem due to location.

There are many, many other properties in the area in the same price range that offer so much more! Consider the Embassy in Poipu or the Marriott's Waihai Beach Club. Both of these properties are in the same area and will have so much more to offer in service and ammenities!

I just returned last night from a stay at the castle Kiahuna plantation- unit #16. This unit is in building #4 and has a magnificent ocean view. It is about 50 steps from the beach and was worth every cent I paid to be there. The Castle management people were warm and friendly - I could not complain if I tried. This is the place to stay, the sun literally set right into our room (much better than the Sheraton or Marriott next door). One note of caution (and the reason these reviews are so diffrent) ask for the unit by number- not all the ocean view condos are nearly as nice as #16, just ask our neighbors staying right beside us! The owner of this unit really keeps it nice. also- try the Beach House restaurant for a sunset dinner- really good macadamia nut crusted crabcakes.

We returned to Kauai after 20 years. Wow, what a wonderful gorgous island which still has the small town charm, very romantic and Aloha spirit.
We were very impressed with our one bedroom second floor condo at Castle Kiahuna Plantation. We had a tropical garden room with a nice view of the grounds and pretty landscaping. The beach is super in front of Kiahuna. We walked to great dinners at Roys and Keokis across the street in the cute shopping center.
The snorkeling at Poipu beach one beach east was very good. We had a monk seal sleeping daily on Poipu beach as well as Sea Turtle. There was a monk seal several days in front of Kiahuna too. They just lie there and enjoy the sun. Shave ice in front of the Beach House restaurant was Ono.
Special trips to Hanalei. We had a great Na Pali dinner cruise/whale watch through Sea Kauai Tours. We saw lots of whales, were in awe of Na Pali, the whales swam next to and under the catamaran.
We also went up to Waimea Canyon. Very pretty.
We would go back to Kauai and Kiahuna in a second

Just returned from a wonderful week in unit #152 at the Kiahuna Plantation. Our condo had just been updated and was terrific. The owners obviously have good taste. The grounds are beautiful, the beach offers good snorkeling, and the management made checking in and out effortless. We found the condo on the internet and rented directly from the owners; they were easy to work with and responsive to all our questions. Whatever you do visit the National Botanical Garden. It is amazing and only 5 minutes from Kiahuna Platation....
