We had a great time at the Kiahuna Plantatiion. We have two children ages 4 and 2 which our one bedroom unit accomodated nicely. Luckily, the condominium we stayed in had an inflatable bed for our 2 year old which is something to ask the owner or Castle resorts prior to booking. Be aware that some condos have been updated while others are still languishing in the past with outdated everything. We were in the latter but the flip side is that the setting is beautiful and it is close to one of the best beaches in the world.
The following are highlights:
- Proximity to beautiful Poipu Beach
- Beautiful grounds
- Friendly and helpful staff
- Excellent bbq's located throughout the grounds
- Nice pool with excellent waterslide and beach wading pool
....and the lowlights:
- Since the rooms only have shuttered windows with screens, it can get noisy at times due to the proximity to the other condos. For a few nights during our stay someone unleashed some college students in the building next to ours and we got to relive our college days.
- The cleanliness of our condo was less than desirable which may be due to the fact that it was sitting empty for a few weeks before our arrival. Also, our condo was due for a major deep cleaning to remove mold from the fridge and dust/dirt from the furniture and curtains. Just make sure to pack your allergy medicine in the event you need it.
- There are charges for any type of cleaning which starts at a daily rate of $18 for the removal of the garbage and towels and goes up from there. Make sure to budget for this ahead of time. There is also a one time charge for cleaning upon check out of $72. We felt like we were being nickled and dimed in this way and it was something they should have included in the cost of the condo. In the end we were afraid to ask for more toilet paper in fear of being charged for it.
- The pool is across a busy highway. This was not a problem for us but I can see where it may be an issue for some who don't want to walk.
Other notes of interest:
- I highly recommend Garden Isle Surf School which is right on Poipu Beach. They were friendly and offered tips out in the water even though I was just renting a board and not taking lessons.
- The Smith Family Luau was incredible.
- The Smith Family Fern Grotto Tour was not incredible. As one of the guide books pointed out, the ferns have never recovered from the hurricanes in '82 and '92.
- We opted for the Kauai Sea Tours boat tour instead of a helicopter ride (The choppers are expensive). The crew, food and service were excellent. They traveled the entire Napali Coast and we saw lots of whales, dolphins and sea turtles. Try to not to take the tour on an above average windy day, i.e. check for white caps. The wife and the majority of others onboard were worshiping the 5 gallon bucket god.
- If you end up staying in a condo, hit Costco in Lihue on your way out from the airport. They have most everything you will need including surf boards!
