“Superb stay in Poipu, Kauai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

Absolutely top notch hotel in Kauai and the trip was a work reward hence we enjoyed it all the more. Stunning gardens and landscapes etc. Lovely rooms and hotel was just the best we have ever stayed in. Food and dinner events were just fantastic and the pool complex (lazy river etc) was outstanding. Coupled with the lovely friendly people at the hotel and a great hiking trip for a day visit.

Do visit if you plan to visit Kauai.

Room Tip: Try to get a sea view if you can.

Front check in to check out the experience was excellent. Not a small resort, it still felt intimate and each and every staff member we came in contact with was friendly, helpful and proactively wanted to make sure our stay was memorable.

Pros
- Beautiful environment, clean, modern and in keeping with the tropical surrounds.
- Staff were great all around
- Pools, all thousand of them - well maybe 4 or 5 but felt like more, all are picturesque and there are plenty of lounging options in including reserved 'cabanas', where you might pay a little more, but it avoids the annoyance of pool lounge squatting typical in many other resorts, something other resorts might like to take note of.
- Food in all the outlets we tried was great, didn't get to try Dondero's, good food selection and catering to all tastes - breakfast excluded - read below.
- Camp Hyatt (kids club), our son didn't want to leave - ever!

Cons
Not many specific to the hotel, however for non US based travellers:
- Breakfast buffet was pretty average, nothing bad about it, just not the selection or quality some might expect if comparing against resorts in Europe or Asia Pacific.
- Coming from outside the US, the resort is a little difficult to get to - if we had semi-direct flights we would be going back regularly.
- pricing of F&B felt a little high particularly when combined with the 'mandatory' tip of 18-20%. This weird cultural anomaly is frustrating at best and at worst comically rude, particularly when the bill comes with a suggested tip calculation. Tips in most of the rest of the world are for better than average service - not to make up for pitifully low wages paid by employers. In the case of the Hyatt the staff generally deserved a tip, but it is the expectation that it is a mandatory part of the bill which seems in-congruent - I hope the staff do actually get the tips.

All in all one of the better resorts we have stayed in regardless of location - a great resort, great staff and definitely recommended. Given an opportunity we will definitely return.

Room Tip: Most rooms are probably pretty good, we had one at the back of the resort, above the adult pool, so...

My husband and I just got back from a two week trip to several islands in Hawaii...started our trip in Kauai at Grant Hyatt for three nights and it was an AMAZING way to kick off our trip! This hotel was absolutely breathtaking (from the minute you pull up and step into the lobby) and had top notch service. Concierge was great/so was the front reception desk. The grounds are spectacular...even if you do not stay at this hotel, it is a must for a visit. Rooms were very clean, well appointed and we had a nice partial ocean view, with great views of the property as well. Had dinner at Tidepools and it was one of the best meals of the trip - great service, and the fish was phenomenal. Breakfast one morning at the buffet (great food but very pricy - would recommend going off the resort and checking out some local spots - one in particular, the Kauai Food Truck!) Pools were clean, and the shops on the property were well appointed and left little reason why someone would need to run off the resort (I mean, you definitely should, but its got everything!). Nice driving distance to the town, restaurants and activates. We do not have children, but did not have any issues with noise as there are plenty of options for pools onsite and we tend to eat dinner a bit later in the evening. Would HIGHLY recommend this resort...and spending as much time on Kauai as possible!

Room Tip: We already had ocean front rooms booked at other resorts for our trip, so we opted for the partial o...

Very large resort. Great pool landscape. Service is friendly but neutral.
Although being Platinum at time of booking and Diamond while checking in, it took lots of discussion and several hours to get an upgraded room (although the hotel was still selling all room categories online).
Housekeeping was a bit lazy, room was not made until turndown service only because of one hour "Do not Disturb" in the morning.
Overall experience was good.

This was our second stay at the Grand Hyatt but it is the first review. We were here for a conference and were amazed. Although we did not see many physical changes, the service and food definitely has improved. We decided not to rent a car since we have been on Kauai several times before but, instead, just to enjoy the resort. We had a room with partial ocean view this time (last time a view of tennis court and a rather dark room), which was located close to the Hyatt club and had a lanai looking out over the lawn and ocean. Great for morning coffee. Minor drawback of this location was people walking past your lanai on their way to the club. However, due to the severe weather, significant wind and rain, few people walked by.
The room was spacious, well maintained, with coffee maker and an empty fridge (a plus for storing wine or beer available for sale at the resort store) and large bathroom. Disappointing were the polyester bathrobes. It may be a cost issue, some people unfortunately think that the bathrobes can be taken home after use, but it is below par for a resort of this level.
The spa had good services but the pool area was quite sparse and a few more planters with palm trees or other flora might make it more enjoyable. Prices are quite steep.
The food in all restaurants was excellent. In particular Tidepools and Yum Cha were significantly better than during our previous visit. More amazingly, all the meals served at our conference were outstanding, more so considering the fact that is was served to a group of several hundred people. It was by far the best food (service) ever experienced at a meeting and we attend 8-12 per year.
The pool area is quite amazing and a nice feature is the adult pool only. However, when you use the spa you can use their pool as well, mainly for adults.
A great service at this resort is the lounge where one can shower and change clothes if you have a late night flight, as many people do. Ask the front desk for access.
Staff was very helpful and friendly across the board.
We know we will be back in a few years and are looking forward to it.

Room Tip: If you don't like people walking by your lanai, ask for a room with a balcony.

We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Kauai for a week and absolutely LOVED it! The hotel is great! All the staff are extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. We spent some time in the pool area and it was fun. They have a water slide, lazy river, salt water pool and more! If you want to go to the beach instead, it's just right there. We did walk to the beach a couple of times and one of our friends jumped off the rock at the end of the beach. The restaurants at the hotel are pretty fairly priced although we didn't eat in much. Also, the gym at the hotel had all the machines, weights, etc. that we were looking to use. In addition, they hold classes at the gym and we took one of them. The class was intense! The lady worked us hard and we were tired, but it was a great way to start our day!

We have stayed at the Grand Hyatt twice and both times have been superb! The service is wonderful and the food is excellent. We had an ocean view room and it was amazing. Loved the salt water pools and the lagoon. Yes, the beach was not the best, but with the lagoon we didn't even need the beach. Would love to go back a third time someday!

Room Tip: Go for the ocean view room!
