“Great for honeymooners”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2007

Let me start off by saying that my husband and I stayed here at The Point for our 2 week honeymoon here on Kauai. We exchanged our two weeks through RCI.

The first week we were there, we were in the 6th building on the 2nd floor - which we HIGHLY recommend because of the lovely view of the waves crashing up on the rocks about 40 yards away - and is ground level. The units are very spacious 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom's with a full kitchen and washer and dryers. There is air conditioning in the bedrooms, and ceiling fans in the living room, and all of the bedrooms, which keeps the unit very cool all the time. Also, there is a lovely cross breeze that comes off the ocean if you keep open the sliding door to your back porch, or lanai.

When you sign in at the front desk reception area, they give you a coupon for a free buffet breakfast, but its only good for one time. They have everything, cereal, eggs, bacon, sausage, portugese sausage and pastries. BUT - GET THERE EARLY! If you wait around, you'll be subject to an "introduction to Kauai" which is a timeshare pitch! Get there at 7 and you'll be good though.

I booked thru RCI as a timeshare exchange. Our room was wonderful! Master suite with a huge bathroom with a shower big enough for 6 and a seperate tub. Second bedroom had a queen bed and it's own bathroom. Full kitchen with pots pans etc, everything you need to make meals! Our room was on the first floor, next to the ocean. The Beach is not on property but is only a short walk away. The pool is a nice size right in the middle of the resort. We also receive a free cooked breakfast for four. Definetly would stay here again!

We stayed here 7 nights in May 2007. We are both pretty darn picky and we loved everything about this place. Room was equivalent to a very nicely maintained 4 star hotel. Grounds are expansive, gorgeous and well maintained. We reserved and ocean view room, so the view was, of course, fantastic.
Green Sea Turtles in the waters all along the back walking trail.

Hyatt is right next door and if you are planning to have lunch, dinner or drinks there you can hang out there as long as you like (keep your receipt to show you are a paying customer, just in case). Go over in the evening and just hang out in the swinging chairs along the beach, bring your own bottle of wine - as long as you are not causing problems they don't ask you anything. Luau at the Hyatt Thurs & Sundays only - Excellent show, food & drinks. This is the only luau we had ever been to that serves you drinks at your table (no waiting in lines); and they keep them coming as fast as you can drink them. The Fire Dancer at the end is the best. If you say its your birthday, be ready to get up on stage to hula. Good practical joke potential there.

4x4 Movie Tour- Tour guide "Guy" -exceptional; off road part at end was great - very mild ride.
Fished from cliffs next to the Hyatt, caught bunch of small fish.

Saw lots of people asking how to keep costs down:
Go to the "swinging bridge" near Hanapepe.
Bring your fishing poles & fish -no license for ocean fishing.
Here are some small $ & great eating places:
Lihue:Hamura Saimin - 50 hwy to Rice Street right on Kress-order the extra pork added to your Saimin Bowl or order the special that has it already; try the pie-buy a whole pie 4 family!
Northeast: Fish Market - Kitty corner to the Lighthouse Bistro, on the road to the lighthouse/animal preserve (a must see) Get the Mahi Mahi Tacos- tons of fresh mahi in them!
South: Snack Shack-on Poipu Rd follow signs to Koala (a tiny town right next to Poipu), attached/behind Seyiouki's (?spelling)
South or East & North: Ask where the "Big Save Market" is: Premade Subs, chicken, steamed rice and sushi/calif rolls; also buy frozen "Kalua Pork" (its exactly like they serve at all the luaus) stir with bag of shredded cabbage, cilantro, little italian dressing-serve with big lettuce leaves & green salsa & steamed rice -Yum.
Burger King: Must try the Portuguese Sausage & eggs served with streamed rice (ask 4 soy sauce)...wish we have that at BK here!
Airports: Order the Kalua Pork Nachos - served at all the airport restaurants, awesome & huge portion -serves two $14.99
Too much good stuff - can't wait to go back

My partner and I stayed at The Point at Poipu just last week and we had a really great time. The brother of my partner has a timeshare with Sunterra and they invited us to join them on this Hawaiian vacation- even though it was a timeshare. Honestly, it was a beautiful resort!! We did have to sit through the timeshare presentation, which in some ways is a joke - but regardless it was a great experience!! The resort was clean, the pool fun and approachable, the drinks great - the happy hours were fun, the food was good (from the Pool side bar), the adult hot tub was great to have near our room (get a ocean view room - it was awesome), the staff was friendly and always said HELLO and the scenery breathtaking. The only real bad is that the guest room in the suites, contains TWIN beds - not queen double beds! For kids and young adults it works great, but not for another adult couple(s)!! Walk along the beach past the Hyatt, which is gorgeous and take in the scenery and if you keep walking and are adventurous keep hiking along the beach for great views (the cliffs are steep - beware)!! Rent a car for sure, because Kauai has so much to do and offer!

  • Liked — A Kitchen that had all the utensils you could ever need!
  • Disliked — Kids in the Adult Hot Tub - that isn't cool.

In brief: The grounds are truly beautiful: lush and well-cared for, the rooms are spacious, clean, comfortable and nicely appointed, the staff is attentive and courteous.

If having a beach directly in front of the resort is important to you, then this is the wrong place, but Shipwreck Beach is within easy walking distance, and Poipu Beach is a couple of minutes by car.

This property is ocean-front, with the waves crashing on rocks. We loved sitting on our lanai watching the spray shooting into the air.

(Most?) All units are two-bedroom; there are ocean-front, ocean view, partial ocean view, and garden view rooms...so if seeing the ocean matters to you, you may want to check on what your view will be.

Parking can be a bit tough to find, though we never failed to find a space.

We will return....Kauai is so beautiful, and this is a great place to stay.

We have just returned from a week at The Point at Po’ipu. The resort is located in a beautiful spot of Kauai and the staff was very friendly.

We stayed on the first floor of building 3, in a 2-bedroom oceanfront with a king in the master bedroom and twin beds in the 2nd bedroom. I believe you can request a queen bed in the 2nd bedroom, but none were available during our stay. If possible, I would request a room on the 2nd floor or higher because the views are much better. I think buildings 3, 4, and 5 are probably the best if you’re able to request. No central air, but each bedroom has its own A/C unit that works incredibly well. The rooms were nicer than the pictures on Sunterra’s website, clean, well maintained, but fairly basic. My husband and I went with another couple and were very happy that the 3rd couple backed out because the sofa bed looked pretty uncomfortable.

The pool is nice and spacious, with a blocked off kiddy pool, and a lukewarm spa, which was nice for my friend who was pregnant, and during warm evenings it was quite pleasant for the rest of us. There is an adults-only spa that is much hotter and pretty crowded in the evenings. The poolside bar offers decent food and drinks for a great price (especially when you compare it to the prices around the island). I have fairly sensitive feet, but did not notice the “gravel” that others have written about...maybe they’ve changed the sand around the pool?

I would definitely recommend The Point to friends and family.

Bests of our stay on Kauai:
Beach: Po’ipu and Ke’e
Food: Puka Dog & Luau at Hyatt
Sights: Sunrise on the bluffs in front of the resort (worth getting up for!)
(I think Waimea Canyon would’ve been up here too, but it was fogged in the 2 days we
tried to see it)

Worsts:
Food: Plantation Gardens
Sights: Spouting Horn (we went at low tide, so this may have attributed to our disappointment)

Good location, above average condo (timeshare) resort.

We do a lot of vacationing and travel to Hawaii at least once each year. Been to all the islands at least twice. Use to staying in Marriott Timeshares or something of close to similar quality. We got the Poipu Point Resort (formerly Embassy, now Sunterra) on a timeshare trade.

I won't go into comprehensive details as you can get those from other sources. Here are the highlights:

MINUSES:

Resort is not on a beach but it is only a 5-minute walk to Shipwreck beach in front of the Hyatt. (Go explore the Hyatt if you want to be Wow'ed.) But even so, the pool doesn't open up to the ocean. There is a building between the pool and the ocean. I think this was a mistake but I guess they figured having more units on the ocean was more important than having an ocean view from the pool.

Units are a step down from what you would find in a Marriott, Westin, Hilton or Four Seasons timeshare, primarily because they are not brand new. Finish work, fixtures and appliances are all fairly average and a step down from those other brands.

No central air conditioning in unit. Beware as this could be an issue in the summer (not in the winter). There are A/C units in the rooms.

The Pool Grill is pretty basic. I didn't see anyone bother eating in the little dining area which is behind a cheesy glass cube wall. They have standard/old TV's. There are no servers. Bartender was not overly friendly. Blended drinks are overpriced (for the setting) and weak.

Sand (more accurately described as gravel) around pool is coarse and doesn't feel good on sensitive feet but myself and the kids didn't mind. (I think other reviewers blow this a little out of proportion.)

I've heard there is not adequate parking during peak periods.

Even though this is a drier side of the island it can be rainy and overcast during the winter (but that's a Kauai issue not the resort's fault.)

POSITIVES:

Units, although not new and luxurious, are very well maintained and in very good shape with good layouts. Beds are comfortable. Master bath is big (not a jet tub though). Kitchen is average condo size. Furniture is decent quality and not looking too worn. If you are not use to a Marriott or Westin timeshare, then you will be thrilled with the quality of the units.

Pool is HUGE with gradual sloping bottom to maximum 3-1/2 feet and ringed by sand/gravel. It was not at all crowded when we were there in mid January. Kids love it.

All units appear to at least have a decent partial view of the ocean.

The location in general (aside from not being right on the beach) is excellent for the Poipu area. (Poipu is probably also the best location on the island.) There isn't a whole lot available that is ocean front with good quality, large 2-bedroom, well laid-out condos. I'd say this would definitely be in the top 5 condos in Poipu, maybe top 5 for all resorts in the area. (See Kiahuna Plantation, Hyatt & Sheraton (expensive and not condos) and Marriott Waiohai for what are probably the other places that round out the top 5.

  • Liked — Location and how well maintained it was.
  • Disliked — No view of ocean from pool.
