Owner description: NTBG’s McBryde Garden and Allerton Garden are located on the south shore of Kauai in the picturesque Lawai Valley. Individual tours of each garden run daily and include a ride from the Visitors Center in Poipu along a scenic coastal route and continue along the valley rim on a former sugarcane train railbed. Visitors disembark on the valley floor to explore these outstanding gardens. McBryde, NTBG’s flagship garden, is home to the world’s largest collection of native Hawaiian flora, many endangered or having gone extinct in the wild. It is a “botanical ark”, filled with palms, flowering trees, ornamental flowers, and unusual plants from the tropical world. Allerton is a former private estate, named by National Geographic Traveler magazine as one of the 50 places to see in a lifetime. Plants form the walls of outdoor rooms, the canopy of trees the ceiling. Housed within are elegant statuary and water features. A popular spot for photos is the ‘Jurassic trees’, with their massive curving roots.National Tropical Botanical Garden is a nonprofit institution, dedicated to saving and studying tropical plants.

“Great, relaxing day”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

Self directed tour and you need comfortable shoes that allow you to walk up moderately steep hills. The view from the top is worth the walk. Much to learn about the multitude of plants in Hawaii, many of them imported.

“A bit disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

Liked that there were opportunities to learn about many of the local plants but didn't like that it just wasn't very beautiful. Maybe we just didn't realize what a "botanical" garden would be like; expected lots of gorgeous tropical flowers but not the case.

“Allerton Garden Tour was not worth it”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

Decided to visit the Allerton Garden after reading the other reviews on here. The gardens where you do a self-guided tour was closed, so we paid up for the Allerton Garden tour. It was 2.5 hours and it was the slowest, most boring guided tour I've ever been on, and I've loved touring the botanical gardens in New York and Montreal. Maybe it is better for older people, but as a young couple we were eager to explore the island and would have been better off going at our own pace. The tour just dragged on and the guide did not make it interesting and was too busy making jokes. We did see some beautiful flowers and trees (the vast majority of which are not native to Hawaii). The Jurassic Park trees and bamboo forest were definitely the highlights.

“A don't miss!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

If you like gardens, flora or fauna. An outstanding tour led by a very knowledgeable guide through a whole valley of gardens, from tropical jungle to endangered plants of Kauai. The waterfall tour was the best.

“Do the sunset/pupu tour...awesome!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

We did the sunset/pupus tour of the Allerton Gardens. Wow! We took a bus down and it lets you off and you are guided by a really friendly and knowledgeable guide through the outdoor "rooms". Water features and cool plants, the Jurasic Park trees, birds, fish, etc. You end up at the "guest house" (where Jackie Kennedy stayed after the assassination) and they set up pupus (appetizers) and drinks...we ate on the lanai...it rained a little and there were many rainbows. There are hammocks on the lawn and you are free to relax in them. The beach is secluded and beautiful and the sunset is amazing. Awesome time you will not disappointed.
