We stopped going here several years ago because of noise and hectic surroundings at tables that are too small and lack privacy.
So we came back because we had good memories of their good food presentations.
We got lucky and scored a four top in a sheltered corner where we could have a conversation. By the time our main course arrived the place was full and as noisy as we remembered.
It is a scene of fast moving servers who really hustle and remain friendly and polite. Our waiter, the bus people and food runners were all fast and friendly, as well as accommodating to every one of our requests. I counted 5 different staff serving our table during our stay, plus two at the front desk. All were polite and thanked us more than once.
My spouse ordered a tasting menu, price fixe which was excellent at $51. Less money than my ordering alacarte. Very happy with each course and their presentation.
Mai Tai drinks were excellent.
I ordered an appetizer of Szechuan flavor spare ribs. It was good but not the flavor of anything from Szechuan. It was a meal in itself and would have sufficed as a main course, or appetizer for 4. Took most of it home for lunch the next day. Concluded that ribs were from a large pig, not the delicate little ones called baby back ribs, and way over sauced with gloppy BBQ sauce, too messy for an appetizer.
My beet salad was disappointing, uninspired limp lettuce with three beet sections that for some strange reason were blackened on a pan.
On to the Asian inspired fish stew. The only inspiration from Asia was some lukewarm soy based brown sauce, which did not improve on the otherwise white meat fish, shrimp and scallops.
Thankfully I could cleanse my palate with an excellent sharing of spouse's dessert assortment from prix fix menu.
They had a nicer than average child's menu for the several families present.
An excessive amount of time elapsed from removal of our salad plates until arrival of main courses. They kept busy trying to sell us more cocktails. Yes they got busy but we placed our orders before they were busy. At least three tables that arrived after us had their dinners and left before our main courses arrived.
So bedlam and good meals as we recalled from several years ago. Not a place for romance or private conversation. There are lots of bad tables in this poorly designed restaurant, we got one of the few acceptable locations.
This Roy's location deserves a remodel after so many years. We will probably return next year despite shortcomings.
