“Not exactly a resort - but rental condos”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

We stayed at the castle resorts during the christmas week not realizing that it is a vacation condo rental. So what that means is that there is no consistency among the units and what you get is your luck.

Lets begin with the positives - The condos are on the poipu coastline that extends from the Sheraton to the Hyatt. The beach has surf area and then an area towards the sheraton that mostly has swimmers and so a good mix for everyone.

Now comes the fun part: Depending on what you book, your unit might be right on the beach (in which case you were the lucky one) or a quartermile walk away with nothing to help you take your beach luggage (boogieboards, surfboards, etc) to the beach.

Some of the units have a third floor but no elevator - so be prepared to take your luggage to the top floor.

The units themselves are spacious and good for families with children, but the decor you get are dependent on the condo owner's taste. The unit we stayed in had no air-conditioning - but i guess you really dont need that in Kauai. We also had the pest control people knock on our door but since we were checking out the next day, we refused the service.

The complex has no pool (even though it is right on the beach) but they have an arrangement with the Tennis and Pool complex across the street (about half a mile from the beach with no shuttle) where you can go and swim if you would like.

Front desk check in is slow and there is no concierge.

Bottomline - It's probably an OK place because of its location at a two star level. Certainly not a Castle as the name suggests

Mahalo for your recent visit.

I am sorry you did not enjoy our resort. I am somewhat confused by your review though. In terms of how close you are to the beach, that is determined by the category you book - obviously Beach Front is closer than Garden View. You are correct in noting that the decor of the unit is dependant on the owner, however you don't mention any disappointment in your unit, so I am again unsure why this is an issue. Our owners take pride in thier ownership, and keep them in excellant condition.

Contrary to your statement, there is a concierge service on property, operated by Expedia.

You are correct in that there is no air conditioning in any of the units at Kiahuna.

In spite of my confustion, since you did not grade us positively (2 stars), clearly we did not live up to your expectations, and I again apologize. If your travels ever bring you back to Poipu please feel free to contact me and I will personally assist in making your arrangments, and promise that you will have a memorable stay.

Aloha,

Castle Kiahuna Plantation provided an amazingly lush, well prepared and stocked room at a fair resort price. We wanted for nothing--our room (155) was obviously the owner's love, and deserving of much pride. The area offers many adventures to choose from plus the relaxing beauty and guilt free pleasure of Kauai's southern beach. We were there for 9 nights and still did not have enough time to experience it all. Mele Kalikimaka, Kiahuna! We will see you again.

We are pleased that you enjoyed 155! It is a beautiful unit and the location is fantastic.

If 9 nights were not enough for you, I would recomend a nice 14 night stay on your next visit!

Before we even walked into the unit, the grounds blew us away. It's out of a fairy tale. Huge overgrown plants and flowers. Soft rolling hills. Perfect lighting around the trees.

And the unit was even better than the grounds. It was modern and clean, and the owners clearly put thought into the unit. It's the perfect size for a couple.

We were mid-way through our trip, so we did laundry one night and cooked in. The kitchen and dining room worked perfectly for us, and it was just what we needed.

The beach is a 5 minute meandering stroll out the lanai. But you want the stroll to last longer because the grounds are so spectacular. The beach was pristine. And I'm happy to say that it's the sunset side of the island as opposed to the sunrise side!

The one thing that I would change, if I had a magic wand, would be the timing of the sprinklers on the grounds. We slept with the windows open every night, and those sprinklers go on with serious force at some ungodly hour! But given the beauty of the grounds, that's a small price to pay.

When we're back in Kauai, we would definitely stay here again.

Mahalo for your kind review! Unit 80 is very nice, and the owners work very hard to keep it that way.

We apprecaite your business, and hope to see you return.

I love this place. The only beach front condo development in Poipu, it shares the strip of sand in front of the Sheraton. Depending on weather and surf conditions, this is a nice swimming beach, except for the youngest. A nearby surf school gives lessons off shore in the mornings, which can be fun to watch. Don't miss the evening sunset from here.

This complex is also walking distance along the shore to the more sheltered, but often crowded public beach at Poipu, and the restaurants at the Sheraton, Marriott's Waiohai and the Poipu shopping village (restaurants, a starbucks and a small market). A quick and easy 5-10 minute drive into Koloa for more restaurants, the old town shops and a Big Save grocery. The shared pool facilities require a walk across Poipu Rd to the Tennis club. You can arrange for daily paper delivery to your door. None of the units have artificial air conditioning, so beware if that is a must for you, or you are unaccustomed to tropical 70+ degree weather. The open layout of each unit makes use of the typical island breeze and I found leaving the shutters open was just fine for me. Plus, you can enjoy the tropical rainfall as it comes and goes.

Each condo in this development is individually owned, so the decor, furniture and some amenities in each unit will vary. Part of the complex is managed by Castle, and others are run by Outrigger, but the common areas are shared by both. Also, there is a wide variety of positioning and view from ocean front to further back on the property. Do some research (VRBO etc) and see if you can ask for a specific unit number to match your preferences. I have stayed in both a unit close to the large common beachfront lawn and a distant "garden view", but even the most distant condos are only a 1 - 2 minute walk to the beach (through beautiful gardens). You can brew your morning coffee (or visit Starbucks across the street) and it will still be hot if you walk to the beach. I will admit, though, I preferred the ground level unit opening to the large common lawn by the beach over the distant units near the parking lot with only a view of trees and lawn. There is a beachfront concierge for free daily use of towels and lawn chairs, rental of snorkeling equipment and arrangement of other activities, and BBQ grills amply distributed throughout the complex that are cleaned daily by staff.

I found the staff here to be very pleasant and helpful, but it is a condo development, not a hotel. If you want 5 star pampering, stay at the Marriott or the Sheraton. If you prefer to have a kitchen, do some of your own dining in, and prefer to take care of some of your own needs, stay here!

These condos represent a decent value. They are nice but not high end. Be careful, if you can, not to rent a unit on the Poipu Road of the resort, because there is a lot of road noise, including a fair number of ambulences, etc. Be aware also that the units don't have air conditioning, so you will have your windows open a lot, and that can be, so noisy. This is a family resort, so there are a ton of kids around.

The beach is long but on the Kiahuna property, it is shockingly skinny - 5 to 7 yards of beach. It is deeper by the Sheraton.

Poipu State Beach is a very short walk away and that seems to be where the best snorkeling is - to the right of the sand spit.

Our particular unit, No 105, had a strange and unpleasant odor in the master bath.

I don't mean to be too hegative - we had a nice stay, and the hotel management was very friendly and accommodating. The onsite Expedia rep was very helpful. Just don't expect a high-end resort, and again if possible stay away from Poipu Rd, including buildings 15-18.

Our first trip to Kauai, we wanted to stay as long as possible, knew this would mean giving up some ammenities to afford to do that. We stayed 2 weeks over Christmas, and it was fantastic! Everyone was "Aloha!" .....the unit we stayed in was #421, and it was very nice. It was a garden view, a longer walk to beach, but not far at all. What the plantation lacked in amenities, the Sheraton or Marriott had to share... Those properties are on either side. We walked the beach to the Sheraton for 630am starbucks coffee, sat there on the beach and watched the whales or the poipu monk seals. Or right down the walk to the Marriotts seaside bar and cafe, tiki torches and wonderful view...they close after sunset. Brenneckes is a short walk around the corner to get a quick breakfast made and eat on tables there on the beach.... The only complaint was the hidabed in living room was unsuitable! Easy fix, walmart has blow up plush camp mattresses for $18.... perfect. We met several other families who return for the same reasons, the best bang for your buck when wanting to stay longer. Housekeeping came every day with clean towels, made bed, trash. Also you get beach chairs and towel rental (free) for their guests. Surf lessons at their beach, and snorkeling available. All good I say!

Room Tip: I dont think there is a fitness center or kids program? My bunch went to the sheraton and worked out...

Poipu is a great place to enjoy Kauai with really nice beaches. While there are many resorts around in this area, we really liked the properties at Castle Kiahuna. Rooms were nicely furnished, the landscaping is really nice and very easy access to the beach. We stayed here for 6 days and had a wonderful time. Highly recommend this place for anyone traveling with family.
