“Perfect Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

I love these condos....always spotless...a fantastic location. Just a short walk to Brenneke's beach and local restaurants. The complex has swimming pools when the surf isn't on the agenda. The staff at the office is always helpful with any questions or issues with the units. They also have an activities desk to help you plan excursions on the island. I've stayed in this complex three times and every time it has been perfect. Just a short drive from Koloa and other dining areas.

Nice stay, no real amenities, but the location is nice and parking is included. Ocean view does not in any way mean ocean front. The resort spans a couple blocks.

Beds made me sore (3 star quality or less) and a resort fee is ridiculous given that there are no amenities. For $15 you can go to the front desk and get a newspaper, have coffee in your room and rent 2 dvd's. ?!?

We would stay again, but it's a value deal. Less comfortable than a best western.

We stayed at the Poipu Sands (which is part of Aston at Poipu Kai) Room 233 booked via an Interval getaway. (Note: Interval doesn't guarantee any room.) This was a two bedroom, two bathroom unit. It was in the middle on the top floor (3rd no lift) in front of the pool (which is far enough away not to be a bother). We could also see the water and beach looking down the lawn/path area.

The unit was well presented, had comfortable furniture and had everything we needed. The master bed was comfortable and the unit was very clean. It had insect screens throughout including the front door which was fantastic. The unit is dated but is not run down (excluding a couple of threads in the carpet). I would definitely stay in this apartment again.

The below is not a list of problems but suggestions for improvements to the unit:

1. Blackout curtains for the bedrooms. (The master bedroom had a window that wasn't covered at all, I do like a dark room, but hey that is just me.)
2. Housekeeping to wipe down the lani handrail to remove the bird poo.
3. Maintenance to grease the sliding doors, they were a bit hard to move.
4. Maintenance to fix the pull cables for the fan/lights (bedroom).

Our accommodations were absolutely spectacular!! We are members of Diamond Resorts International, so we were originally expecting to stay at The Point at Poipu (the Diamond Resorts Property) but based on our travel dates, there were no 1bdrms available here, so they made us a reservation for a 1bdrm garden villa at the Aston property just down the road. I was a little worried at first, but as soon as we walked into our villa all my fears turned to pure joy!! We were in a newly renovated unit that had clearly been updated with all the latest and highly desired touches.
-Comfortable and spacious bedroom with a large closet, safe to keep all valuables, a really cool storage unit set into the wall, and a cute sliding wood door to close off the room
-HUGE bathroom with double sinks, granite countertops, modern fixtures, large walk-in (and sit-in) shower; small toilet area separated by a cute wood pocket door
-Separate dining area with a gorgeous dining table set
-A little desk nook for reading/study
-Beautiful and spacious kitchen with granite countertops, new appliances (large cooktop/oven combo, microwave, dishwasher, fridge); plenty of counter space, cabinets fully stocked with clean dishes, flatware and cookware.
- Large sunken living room with flat screen tv and comfortable couches with matching end tables. Flooded with natural light from windows and sliding doors to outdoor patio and garden
-Laundry closet with stacked washer/dryer
-Recessed lighting throughout, all fans and lights on fans are operated by control panels on the wall in each room

This was the vacation suite of our dreams!! The unit was spic-and-span clean when we arrived, and they courteously provided many little amenities in the room that we didn't expect: powder laundry detergent, dishwasher powder, dish washing liquid, 2 beach chairs, and a beach umbrella, etc.

I was thrilled with the suite itself and the property overall. We were just a short walk to the beach, the parking area was covered and decorated with the most beautiful floral bushes/trees. The grounds were well maintained and clean, with very beautiful landscaping.

I don't know what the rooms at The Point at Poipu look like but we couldn't be happier with our "substitute" accommodations!!

After spending our first week at the Westin Villas in Princeville, we made our way south to Poipu for a second week on the island. This was a two bedroom, two bath IntervaI International 'getaway' we purchased, and based upon the amazing properties we have visited in the past, we believed there were some standards involved in these 'getaway's'. The biggest mistake was thinking that the negative reviews i read were surely isolated incidents, and besides, the pictures on their website seemed very nice. Right?

As in other reviews, it can be confusing to even find the office initially. We were greeted by staff members Luke and Ella and given the keys for unit 511. Because of the reviews, we inquired if this unit had recently been renovated. Although they both claimed that they didn't know for sure, it was obvious in their reaction to my question that they were well aware of the unit, and aren't good liars. However, with an open mind, we drove down the street, and entered 511.

I can best describe unit 511 as DISGUSTING. It has not been renovated - EVER. The carpeting was similar to that i have seen in a work capacity in run-down crack houses. There were spider webs along the tops of door frames and in the corners of rooms. An old, used bar of soap remained in the shower, complete with all sorts of mysterious objects embedded in it. Mouse droppings in the living room. A panel for the hotwater tank in the kitchen was slightly ajar, and when opened, doesn't appear to have ever been cleaned, likely adding to the pest problems.

Response of staff? Well, they first offered to have the housekeeping staff attend to do a better job of cleaning. However, I expained that a cleaning wouldn't suffice and that a demolition would be better suited. They maintained that they were full, and so they couldn't simply find a different unit for us, but would see what they could do. Ella claimed that they have no idea what the units look like as they never leave the office area, and only hear from housekeepers if there are problems. I pointed Luke to the glossy brochure at the front desk, with similar photos on their website of very nice rooms. He told me that he didn't even know where the pictures were taken, and then advised us that because each unit was individually owned, if the owners didn't want to renovate for "10 decades", it was their choice. Wow! But they are inspected yearly, Ella clarified. It seems that their unit 'inspectors' may have some very, very low standards.

After my wife demanded our money back, and advised that we would find alternate accommodations, they explained we would actually have to go through Interval to get our money back, but did agree to call their General Manager to see what could be done. As we were waiting, another couple were checking in, and asked if they could look at their assigned unit prior to taking it - they had probably seen the reviews as well. Suddenly, unit 914 became available, and we requested to go take a look before agreeing. The unit was more updated, was generally clean, but still definitely NOT what is advertised. After being subjected to 511, i was willing to pay whatever it took to get off of the property, but there simply was no availability at nearby hotels, and the family weren't too keen with my idea of buying tents from Walmart and camping on the beach. Thus, we reluctantly agreed to take unit 914 for the week. Other than both bathtubs in the unit regularly plugging up, cockroaches running around, and MAJOR traffic and adjoining condo noise, it was tolerable. The best strategies i found were keeping footwear on at all times, and spending as little time as possible on property. Cleaning staff do a terrible job, which is probably one of the main reasons the units become so run down.

I had no past experience with Aston properties, and after this, I will never have any future experiences with them, nor would i recommend it. The fact that they would put their brand and reputation on accommodations like these is telling. This place made our second week in Kauai memorable, that's for sure, but they're certainly not good memories.

If you really like surprises, dodgy accommodations, and low standards of cleanliness, do visit the Aston at Poipu Kai! And tell all your friends, because i sure am.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments and experience at the Aston Poipu Kai. I apologize for the missteps of housekeeping by not removing the previous guests soap from the shower. We do have pests in Hawaii, however, your report of mouse droppings was immediately inspected by Housekeeping the day of your arrival. The material of the black spots on the carpet was bits of asphalt from the parking lot. The entire parking lot of Kahala was recently repaved.
We do our very best to work with owners to keep their units upgraded. As most owners can afford small projects at a time, we are currently working the owner of K511. This carpet is scheduled to be replaced in March, along with the sofa sleeper in March.
We are glad that you chose Kauai as your vacation destination, I am sorry that your experience with us did not meet your expectations.

Sincerely,

Malana deSilva

Before we left, I'd read mixed reviews of this resort, from 1 star to 5 star, with almost nothing in the middle. I learned that these are individually owned condos, which may account for the disparity in reviews. I don't know if it made a difference, but I called a few days ahead of time and requested an updated unit, which we got. This is an older resort without the fantastic gardens of some resorts, but our 2 bedroom was updated, clean and well maintained. The clock did not work in the bedroom and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the manager went out and bought a new one for our unit - considering the units are individually owned. It's within walking distance to Brennecke's which has a nice beach and great restaurant.

Two bedroom, two bath unit. Very comfortable condo for two couples or family of four. Master bedroom with queen and second bedroom with two twin beds and hall bath.

The Pluses:
1. Nice comfortable layout, very recently remodeled with a very nice kitchen and nice, comfortable furniture and beds. Kitchen was well-appointed with good quality. Everything was very well done.
2. Great property location...walk to beach, tennis, pool and a couple of nice restaurants.
3. Clean as a whistle.
4. Ground floor unit has easy, private access. Walk out the back to one of the communal grills and your lanai.
5. We found some very nice little extras left by the owners for their renters such as a couple of beach chairs, a set of older golf clubs, a cooler, a boom-box and so on. That was a nice touch. Thanks!
6. Lots of parking very nearby.

The Minuses:
1. The bedrooms face the road, so you can hear the cars and trucks go by.
2. The front office closes at 8:00 p.m., so if you arrive after that, you'll get an envelope with keys and a map and you have to figure it out for yourself from there.

This unit worked perfectly for us and we would happily rent it again.
