“Don't miss this restaurant!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2010

Finally, on the 5th night of our trip we had a great meal! We had been to so many average to below average restaurants since arriving on Kauai, that we really thought we were just not going to have a good meal while on our trip... until we ate at Merriman's. We had heard some not so good reviews, but went there anyway, SO GLAD WE DID! Apparently the restaurant had only opened a few months before and I think had gone thru some hurdles, regardless, it appears as though they have figured out the kinks, cause our meal was exceptional.

Starting with the server, the experience was top notch. We were seated out on the open aired deck (which supposedly has an amazing sunset view, we were there much later) and it was a bit windy. The server noticed we looked a bit chilly and asked the ladies if we wanted a shawl to keep us warm. Nice touch. It was perfect and kept us from having to move inside.

Our server had tons of knowledge on all of the dishes and the extensive wine list. He had great opinions and ideas for pairing wines with our courses. We were also impressed when he told us Merriman's prefers to use all local ingredients. From the cheese, to lettuce, to beef to fish, they wanted to stay true to Hawaii and use Hawaiian ingredients- now that is what I call authentic! We started out with the "Pupu" platter. It was an appetizer dish to share, there were 4 of us and it was a great way to start the meal. Perfect size portions of the Beet salad with Kunana dairy chevre, Ahi Tuna, Pork and onion quesadilla, sesame crusted Marlin sashimi. Each was excellent in their own way. We all had the wedge salad or the special soup of the day, which was tomato. Thumbs up to all. Moving into the main course, that is when we were blown away. Two of us had the Butterfish special of the day... outstanding! It was so fresh and the flavors were so wonderful, it was a hit! My husband had the Lamb dish and my friend had the Pork special- we all cleaned our plates it was so good!!! We had the mango cheesecake to finish up, very refreshing way to end the meal.

We easily rank this dinning experience as the best one of the entire trip. The food was exceptional, the waitstaff was fantastic and the atmosphere was great. We loved Merriman's and would recommend it to anyone looking for a WONDERFUL meal!

“Fabulous, but pricey!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2010

My husband and I were looking for good vegetarian restaurant and our bed and breakfast owner mentioned Merriman's.

It has locally sourced food and a seasonally rotating menu.

The atmosphere was great, the service was great, and the food was spectacular. The prices were super high, much higher than we are used to paying!

“Good food but a little pricey”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2010

A new branch in the Kukui'ula Center in Poipu. Upstairs dining room is lovely, with windows all around overlooking rice fields. Entrees come in small or large portions, but the small portion is only about $5 less (large entrees $30-$45). Fresh island ingredients and a very nice wine list. My only complaint was the loud Europop music.

“Great Hawaiian dining experience for both meat eaters and vegetarians”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2010

My family ate at Merriman's on the Big Island a couple years ago and enjoyed our expereince. On our recent visit to Kauai, we were so pleased with our dinners that we ate there twice. My daughter and I (vegan/pescatarian) had the sauteed taro cakes and were pleasantly surprised. The salads were good, but nothing out of the ordinary for Hawaiian cuisine. My husband ordered fish both times and it was the best fish of his trip. The truffle parmesan fries were a nice twist on a classic American side dish and the pineapple upside cook was much better than my mother's. The staff was attentive and helpful and the location was very comfortable and the view was pleasent. We didn't visit the bar/cafe downstairs, but it looked just as nice as the resturant.
