“Terrific Hotel ... and Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

We spent three nights in a deluxe oceanfront room. Our sunset views from our room were simply amazing and location within the hotel complex afforded a quiet environment, which created the opportunity to listen to the ocean waves all night long (if you have the balcony door open). The room is nicely appointed in a very Hawaiian theme. The hotel complex has a private crescent shaped beach. Staff were very responsive and helpful. The Poipu area is sunny and good swimming beaches.

Room Tip: Spend the extra money and get the deluxe oceanfront room ...

We visited this past April 2013 and I didn't think to post a review until I realized how heavily I rely on trip advisor reviews when planning our vacations. This was our first trip to Hawaii and we loved every minute! We booked through Costco Travel which I highly recommend if you are a Costco club member. Our package included the room for 5 nights, a rental car and daily breakfast. There was a small mixup on the breakfast situation. According to our trip details, the breakfast was supposed to include a choice of item off the menu, but I think at some point between when we booked and when we went on our trip, their restaurant set-up changed because they told us upon arrival that our breakfast would only include the "buffet" which was essentially continental with some hot food choices. My husband was actually pleased with this new deal, but I am a pickier breakfast eater so I was stuck eating toast and a few slices of bacon each morning rather than the waffle or breakfast wrap I thought I was going to have a choice of. I contacted Costco to update their information so that future travelers would not have this surprise.

We opted to not upgrade our room to an ocean view to save money, but I wish we had. The ocean that this property is near is gorgeous and we saw a lot of people with the ocean view rooms sitting on their patios or balconies enjoying the room. Our room was a "garden view" and it was just that, very standard, nothing special or bad about it. We were in the back of the property which is essentially "across" the street from the lobby, restaurants and pool but we don't mind walking so it wasn't a huge deal. It was mostly inconvenient when we got down to the beach and realized we forgot something in the room.

The beach access at this property is awesome! We have not stayed at any other hotels in Hawaii, but we did see several others where you could tell that they did not have direct or close access to the sand. For us, we loved this about the Sheraton because we wanted to be on the beach and in the water everyday! We rented a beach "cabana" which was really just two beach chairs with padding and a cover that you could have up or take down to soak up the sun on one of the days and it was worth every penny! I believe it was only $50 a day so if you got it right at the open of the beach rentals place, and used it all day then you get your money's worth. We even rented boogie boards that day which was fun. The pool waiter will come to you on the beach as well so we were able to order lunch and drinks and they brought it out.

One of the not so great things that we experienced, which was not entirely the hotel's fault, was the luau's backup rain location. Of course, I would have preferred it not rain period, and if you have a heads up that it is going to rain on the night of your luau reservation, change it ASAP! The luau was originally planned to be a beach luau but due to the rain, got moved to the covered "garden" area. The show itself was cool, my first luau so nothing to compare it to, but the location just ruined it because it didn't feel authentic and the beach location was the main reason we had booked the hotel's luau rather than an outside company. The food was just ok, it was served in catering dishes, so no real roasted pig or anything and the drinks were included which made up for the price tag and disappointing location. We walked by the luau held two nights later on the beach and I almost cried because we paid the same amount as those people and it just seemed that much better outside.

Overall we loved this hotel, and would recommend to anyone looking to be close to the beach in South Kauai.

Room Tip: Garden view will be across the street from the lobby, restaurants and pool, so if you hate to walk...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

My husband and I spent the Christmas holidays here for 5 days. We are both SPG platinum members and were suppose to stay at the St Regis but plans changed at the last minute so we stay at this Sharon instead without much expectations. However, our experience were so great and so much better than we had anticipated. With the new renovations I would rate this hotel as a true 4 stars hotel.

1. Location: Perhaps the best sandy beach on the entire island. Lots of chairs (but not enough shades). Cabanas costs extra $ for daily rental. Monk seals spotted on the beach for the entire 5 days during our stay. 2 shopping centers within walking distance. Free shuttle. Great restaurants nearby in walking distance.

2. Room: we had a ocean front room with a spacious balcony. Besides basic and clean, a huge plus is the sound proof system. Our room is literary by the pool, above the pool concierge, and the pool restrooms (perhaps the busiest spot in the entire hotel during the day). We were so pleased that once the balcony door is closed it's literally dead silent in the room. Children screaming outside, people renting beach towel and using the beach restroom downstairs, no problem, dead silence in our room. AC system is sufficient and quiet. We are allergic to mold and down - yet no problem at all to sleep through the nights.

3. Rum Fire: The restaurant that serves dinner. They offers social hours to SPG members with free wine tasting. A simple perk with great wine selections (not some cheap stuff) is a huge plus. The food here is expensive, but at least it's very tasty.

4. Surrounding: Beautiful grass lawn and lava walkways to jog, walk, or enjoy the sunset.

Downsides:
1. Cabanas rental is quite expensive: small for $50/day and big for$100/day, They must be returned by 5pm. A bit too restricted since the sun is still up at 5pm.
2. Lava's- a pool side restaurant for breakfast and lunch. Breakfast selection is really poor. Same food everyday without any varieties. Besides fruits there is no fresh vegetable options. And everything is extremely salty. There is one waffle machine to make your own waffles and the line was extremely long for our entire stay (so alas, despite daily attempt we were not able to get to it in 5 days). Suggest the management either simply add an additional waffle machine or flip waffle for your guests please.

For the bang of the buck I would highly recommend this hotel.

My husband and myself and another couple just returned from ten days at the Sheraton Kauai. Overall, it was a very good experience. The hotel is in a fabulous location. Steps to a great beach and walking distance to the Shops at Kukuiula as well as a couple of nearby restaurants and a short drive to Poipu Village. We had a deluxe ocean suite with a killer view which was huge. Huge living room, huge bedroom, and huge bathroom. Although it was large, the furniture was very dated (read: The Brady Bunch-era) and not the least bit Hawaiian. The only Hawaiian decor in the room was three tropical-type pictures. Not a big deal, but if I'm in Hawaii, I like the whole Hawaiian decor experience. Our room was quiet even with the a/c going. The king bed was very comfortable and had nice linens. The room came with Internet but we had real problems staying logged on. My husband spoke with the front desk and they gave us our own router for the length of our stay at no extra charge, which was nice. Housekeeping gave us two bottles of water each day. The front desk personnel was hit and miss. The woman who checked us in was wonderful but a couple of the other front desk women were not particularly friendly with the exception of one young gal who was crazy-chatty and friendly. The rest of the staff was very friendly and helpful.

We spent most of our time at the beach cabanas which we rented for $50/day. Totally worth it. Because it was during Christmas, the hotel was busy and we noticed people searching for empty chairs by the pool. The rented cabanas included food/drink service, which was nice. Most of the servers were great but we did experience a couple who were aloof. At one point I ordered a smoothie. The server brought it and I never saw her again. Not even to close out my tab. Everyday the servers offered something to the guests at the pool and at the cabanas...Otter Pops, frozen yogurt...that sort of thing. A nice touch. Two people who worked at the pool service counter, Arch and Kira, were wonderful. Josh was also great.

The only real issue we had was with breakfast. We had the Breakfast Package as part of our room. Breakfast is served in the Lava Restaurant near the pool. It's a pretty small restaurant. There were several days when there were long lines waiting to be seated. So while you are waiting in line, you are trying to stay out of the way of the people at the pool and those using the pool service desk. The food at Lava's is marginal at best. And the small-selection buffet served the exact same thing every day. No changes. There is no omelette bar. You can order off the menu but the food was coming from the same kitchen so it probably wasn't going to be much better than the buffet food. We walked down to the Koa Kea Resort and had breakfast at Red Salt and it was delicious and less expensive. We also walked up to the Shops at Kukuiula and had breakfast at Tortilla Republic and the Living Foods Market. While at Living Foods we ordered sandwiches for lunch and took them back to the hotel. Much better food. We had two lunches at Lava and again, food was marginal and unfortunately the service was lacking a bit as well. There is a small gift shop/market near the lobby that has (very doughy) pizza and sandwiches and salads. That served us well for a couple of lunches. We had Christmas dinner at Rum Fire and it was pretty good. A very nice selection of items on the buffet. There are tons of good restaurants nearby so took advantage of those for dinner most nights.

We would definitely return to the Sheraton but would probably pass on the Breakfast Package and know that we would be doing some walking for breakfast every morning. I think if they were to invest in some updated room decor, maybe put microwaves in the rooms, and step up the whole breakfast experience (including the quality and selection of the food), it would bring the level of the resort up several notches.

Room Tip: If you're going to go to Hawaii, spring for something with an ocean view. We were in the Ocean...

Aloha ADuckatHeart,

Mahalo for choosing Sheraton Kauai Resort for your accommodations in the islands. We were pleased that your overall stay was enjoyable. Thank you for mentioning our friendly team members such as Arch, Kira and Josh at the pool. We were pleased to read that you enjoyed our signature restaurant RumFire Poipu Beach, however, we were disappointed that your breakfast experience did not meet your expectations. Your valuable comments have been shared with our team members in the food & beverage department to continue to improve the experience at all of our dining options at the resort. We are happy to hear you would consider staying with us again and look forward to the opportunity to be of service to you in the future. A hui hou.

Fantastic location, great beach with nice surf right in front, I will go back just for the location. We had a great Oceanfront room, worth the difference in price w the other rooms. Well kept grounds. Nice restaurant on site.

On the negative side: the pool area was poorly maintained, there was green algi growing in a pond right outside the pool exit area and I took a bad fall, messed up my arm pretty badly, I told them about it and they cleaned it up. Also, the staff seemed a bit off (for example, the lady at check-in did not make eye contact, which was very unusual for Hawaii; the concierge did not have suggestions as to what to do in the island). Employees seemed to be disenchanted working there. For contrast, I stayed at the Kauai Beach Resort later and the staff seemed a lot more engaged and happy.

I would go back for the location. Watch out for the pool area, it is very slippery.

Room Tip: Oceanfront rooms are great

We enjoyed our 8-night stay at this small, lovely resort situated on a wonderful beach. We were in building 6, on the third floor of a garden view room. Velvet who checked us in (with her trainer by her side) was friendly and efficient. Our housekeeper, Mila, was diligent and friendly as well.

We didn't have high expectations after reading a few of the reviews of the garden-view rooms, so we weren't at all disappointed. Also, our plans were to be outdoors all day, so the room was really just a place to sleep and shower. If you want a pampered or luxurious experience, I would not recommend buildings 3 - 8.

Rooms: Room 6308, clean and big enough for the two of us who were primarily using the room as a place to rest our heads between hiking, swimming and snorkeling. Comfortable king bed in this room with soft linens and two types of pillows provided. The sliding doors are squeaky, so they will disturb you from your sleep as others wonder in and out from the balcony. The tub area could use an overhaul; the vent and other metal surfaces are either rusting or covered in mineral buildup. Not a big deal to me, though.

Beach: Offers soft sand and great swimming with gentle waves in the winter. For *intermediate* to *advanced* snorkelers (do not want people to get cut up by reef or have them panic and stand up on delicate coral), the snorkeling on the right side (as you look out on the water, where the rocks are located) of the beach offers great snorkeling when the water is calm. Same for Poipu Beach Park. Schools of large fish were on the far right side of the beach (in front of Marriott's Waiohai Beach Club), not by the tombolo. Surfers usually take up this space, so be aware.

Pool and pool area: On the smallish side, but its size made it feel more intimate and friendly. One wavy pool, with hot tub, and kid's pool.

Staff: All had the Aloha spirit -- always quick to smile. Thanks to Mila, Velvet and Sandy for their great service.

Restaurants: Lava's had pretty standard fare. Salads, tacos, and fish entrees. Rum Fire offered pizza in addition to other standard "American" food. Decent not great. The service was attentive and friendly. Would be nice if they offered Hawaiian fare. Resort prices.

Fitness Center: Clean, fairly large, well lit with ocean view. Two elliptical machines, half dozen treadmills, full rack of dumbbells (up to 50 pounds), two types of bikes and a cable-system all over body machine. Mats, water, and towels provided.

Property: Not the grand landscaping you would normally see at a resort hotel, but you can see that it is lovingly maintained. In no way was it disappointing... you're on Kauai for goodness sake. The sunsets on this hotel cannot be beat due to its location right the beach facing SW.

Good to know:

1. Ice machines are located on the northeast end of the garden view buildings, on the odd-numbered floors. Book accordingly, so you're not right next to one.
2. If you are more of a self-service person, and are using this place as a motel, building three is the closest to the self-parking lot with buildings four, five, etc., being farther away.
3. Their restaurants, Rum Fire and Lava's, are not open every day. Be sure to check the hours, so you can plan for food outside the premises and ensure you make it there in time as most restaurants in town close early.
4. For those celebrating an anniversary, the complimentary "champagne" is a sparkling wine out of California. Too sweet. Save yourself the wait -- and the spike in glucose -- and get some champagne at the restaurant or buy your own from Big Save.
5. The 30.00+ tax resort fee does not go out to the service staff. Be sure to tip your housekeeper!

Room Tip: 1. If you want a special experience at the Sheraton, book a room in Building One Oceanfront. Pu...

Aloha LovesNoodles,

Thank you for choosing Sheraton Kauai Resort and for taking the time to review your recent experience with us. We are pleased the resort served as a great launching point for the hiking, snorkeling and swimming that many of our guests enjoy at or around the resort and appreciate you highlighting the resort's lovely oceanfront location. We were sorry to hear the resort did not exceed your expectations in areas such as dining as we strive to create lasting memories in each area of service. Our signature restaurant, RumFire, does pride itself in Hawaii-rooted cuisine, however, for guests seeking more traditional Hawaiian fare, the resort also offers an exciting weekly luau that features an array of traditional island dishes. Your comments have been shared with our team to continually improve the guest experience at Sheraton Kauai, and we hope you will consider staying with us again in the future. Mahalo.

Sheraton Kauai, is an older resort. Our room was facing the beach in Koloa, Kauai. We had Starwood Gold amenities like a 10% food discount free valet parking. The room was good sized with a very nice bed. The bathroom was clearly old with the shower in the tub. Some of the worst bath products. There were no snacks etc., however we had two bottles of water everyday. It has been a long time that at a higher brand hotel resort like the Sheraton they would have plastic glasses and paper coffee cups! I called and they did bring glass glasses. The Wi-Fi was included as part of the Gold status but it was awful. It basically would not work with our iPhones or my iPad. The rooms were $295 a day plus $32 per day resort fee. The staff was great and the view was excellent. Kauai is beautiful and much more low key and friendly than the other islands we have visited. We were here for our middle daughter's wedding and we can not wait to return. Probably not at this resort.

Room Tip: The beach rooms second or third floor are the best
