“Kauai's Best Boutique Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2011 via mobile

The Aloha spirit is back big time. This small hotel is a gem on a great beach with wonderfully deigned rooms and excellent dining.
Everything about this comfy hotel is peacevill and relaxing. We had a groundfloor room with a planted patio with an ocean view.
If you like crowds and behemoth hotels go elsewhere. Here you will be pampered in luxury and lulled to sleep with the sound of the surf. Ahhhh!!!

My wife and I just returned from Kauai, visiting the island for the first time. I chose the Koa Kea hotel based on the reviews here and we both were very happy with our choice. Everyone who worked at the hotel was very friendly and helpful throughout our stay, with a personalized check-in and tour from the concierge and always greetings from all the staff we met.

The hotel as others have mentioned here is low key, less busy, and smaller than the other hotels and lodging either direction along the beaches, including the neighboring Mariott which is a zoo with lots of people, but has a nice outdoor snack bar and beach area. The Koa Kea's pool area is private and cozy with a decent view of the ocean, though until you get on to the beach path or the beach itself, it is not panoramic.

The grounds had plenty of room and lawn chairs, and there is one moderate sized pool and one hot tub, which were never that busy. I was told the hotel was about half full when we were there (mid-Feb). The hotel only had valet parking (free except for gratuity), which I assume was due to space constraints and to keep public beach-goers from using it.

The hotel has a restaurant with excellent food (though expensive). On Friday/Saturday nights the lounge served sushi, which I don't eat but my wife highly recommends. In addition, there are several other decent restaurants within walking distance, and several more within a couple miles drive.

We had a spacious 2nd floor (preferred over the 1st floor) ocean view room with a pillow-top King bed, which was VERY comfortable. Probably the best bed I've stayed on in a hotel. The bathroom and walk-in shower area were beautifully appointed. The balcony was reasonable with two chairs and a table and a privacy screen between neighbors.

If I had to complain about some minor things (very minor) it would be that that there was not an ice machine in our building (had to go to the neighboring building), the coffee maker took custom single coffee packets (sold by the hotel after your first 6 small cups for the week are used up), and the TV menuing system was very poorly designed (changing channles was cumbersome and slow using the menu system, it wouldn't remember the last channel previously, and it always came on the with the volume very loud. I know, I shouldn't be watching TV when I'm in Hawaii.

The hotel has three separate buildings (shaped in a "U" around the pool area). Because of the geometry, the ocean view rooms, while having a direct view of the ocean, were set farthest back from the ocean. Nice, but not stunning or panoramic. The partial ocean view rooms (I assume) were in the closer buildings, just not square to the coastline. And the ocean front rooms, I can guess were at the ends of the "U", probably having a great view, but right over the beach pathway, which might have some traffic and noise later at night.

All in all we were very pleased with our choice of Poipu (from with we could day trip west to Waimea canyon, and then day trip to the north side on another day... to this point, the East coast hotels are also well-situated... though my best idea for next time is to split the hotel time for the week on the south and north shores). The Koa Kea was ideally positioned in within Poipu and the best Poipu beaches were right at our front-door within easy walking.

we recently returned from kauai. I was very torn when booking at where to stay on the island, and then which place to stay once I decided on location. Poipu I have to say, is ok. It's very small and if I had to do it again, i might stay 1/2 trip in the south and 1/2 in the north. Coconut coast area also looks great. There is not much in poipu. The beach is pretty good - you'll need to likely walk over to the public beach which is good for families. We went in the winter and it seems that everywhere on the island the surf is quite rough at that time. Koa Kea is a wonderful choice if you're looking to stay in poipu. It's clean, quiet, the staff are amazing - so friendly and helpful - the customer service here is outstanding. The pool and whirlpool are just right and never overccrowded. Our hotel stay included breakfast which was great. Next door is waihoa marriott and it seemed quite crowded. On the other side is plantation condos which seem nice but there are lots and not all near the water (note that plantation gardens restaurant is EXCELLENT). At koa kea, we heard the waver, had a partial ocean view which was great, bedding was excellent, room was good size, bathroom was awesome. I loved this hotel. Only thing is, it's rather pricy, but if you're looking at this price range, you can't beat it. Also, if you joing their rewards program, you can get a free room upgrade (none was available during our stay so that was disappointing but we still had a nice room). Also note that they charge $16/day for parking/internet and you can't self park.

My husband and I stayed at the Koa Kea Resort for our honeymoon in February 2011. The experience was great from start to end! The staff gave us a nice warm welcome upon our arrival and sent champagne to our room on our first day. The room was beautifully decorated in a modern design, clean, and comfortable, with a nice view of the ocean. The pool and hottub were great too! The location was great - close to all the beaches - and we took advantage of the snorekling and boogie boarding rentals every day. Breakfast at the Red Salt was included in our plan - which was a nice bonus! The lemon souffle pancakes at the resturant were delicious! We definitely will stay at the Koa Kea again!

We had such an amazing experience with our experience at the Koa Kea. The staff is especially friendly and helpful. The rooms are perfect, nice size, shower, and comfortable feather pillow tops on the beds. Felt like sleeping in a cloud. (it can get warm with a feather topper and a feather down comforter, but we cured that with a cooler room.

The size of the Koa Kea was a true plus. Small intimate size, while being pampered. There were some kids, but it seemed to cater more towards an adult and young adult crowd. Great sunset views. GREAT restaurant (Red Salt). For fine dining, you can't go wrong with Red Salt. My husband had his best steak (hands down) there (and he's from Montana!). We ate there twice and had two amazing meals. If you are looking for massive quantities, you will be disappointed, but if you want a restaurant that will tickle your taste buds, you will have a great meal.

Also enjoyed a nice couples massage. It was great. Definitely helps set you into relaxation mode!

Can't say enough about the hospitality of the staff. All of them were superb! Concierge was amazing.

We came to Koa Kea upon arriving in Kauai on December 23rd for our honeymoon, and stayed until the 28th.

The rooms were really nice and they did arrange everything I had asked for in advance. They had decorated the bed in rose petals and also gave us complimentary champagne.

The property itself was very nice - it was isolated to generally adults which is nice when you are on your honeymoon. The hot tub though wasn't working and it was more like a warm tub. Eventually, we just went and used the one at the Marriott next door. Hopefully, they could work something out with them in the future, or figure out how they can fix it quicker. The beach was very nice and we saw a gorgeous sunset during our stay - this is probably the best beach area in Poipu and Kauai.

We also got a couple of massages during our stay (which was included with our package), which were decent but nothing spectacular. We also ate at their restaurant called Red Salt for breakfast each day and one dinner. The breakfast was really nice as you got to choose from an ala carte menu. The dinner was decent, and I did enjoy tasting the Red Sea Salt they had gotten from the island itself.

The staff was overall nice even there was one person at the door that was emotional and didn't have the patience you would expect from resort staff.

Overall, a great stay at the resort but it could have been perfect with a few small things.

Stayed at the Koa Kea Resort for six nights during our honeymoon. Wow it was a perfect place and literally the best spot for couples looking for a romantic and relaxing setting. Great location and wonderful grounds. Ate at the Red Salt one night and it was to die for! We had a partial oceanfront room and could enjoy the most beautiful sunsets from our balcony. However, I have to admit we watched most of them from the Tiki Bar...the drinks are fabulous...and the bartenders were wonderful. Jamie was the best!! Loved her! So fun and energetic, and can mix some wonderful tasty drinks! When can we go back??
