We stayed at the Ko'a Kea for three nights. Based on its website and the glowing reviews on Trip Advisor, we had very high expectations. On the positive side, the level of service provided was outstanding. The staff is well trained and ready to help guests in any way possible. This was noticeable from the start -- when making the reservation, to check in, to help from the concierges, to service at breakfast, to the valet attendants. (The only area which seemed lacking was service at the pool but that wasn't a big deal to us.)
That said, exceptional service cannot make up for the inadequacies of the property. We have been to Hawaii many times and have stayed at the Four Seasons in Maui, the Mauna Kea on the Big Island, and the Princeville Resort. Those are true “resorts” with beaches, great workout facilities, and choices for dining outdoors for any meal.
We were surprised to find that our experience at the Ko'a Kea was more comparable to a stay at a moderately priced motel/motor lodge. Our room was small and not particularly pleasing or inviting. Our “lanai” was tiny with no privacy and unappealing to use. We could hear the couple staying in the room next to ours. The Ko'a Kea has NO beach and the thought of renting chairs to use one of the nearby crowed beaches held no attraction.
We were disappointed in our dinner at the hotel's restaurant, The Red Salt. The restaurant was extremely busy and quite noisy. Our waiter did his best to provide good service but we couldn’t wait to get out of there. The food was good, but nothing outstanding.
Again, the overall level of service was excellent but it doesn't overcome the shortcomings of the property. Unfortunately, we were really disappointed with our stay and feel that our experience did not remotely live up to expectations. Would not consider returning.
