“Exceeded all expectations!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

Our one week stay in Kauai at the lovely Koa Kea at Poipu Beach exceeded all our expectations! All associates, from the front desk to valets and housekeeping were consistently accommodating, friendly, and helpful. The valets called us by name making sure we had directions to where we were going and gave us beach towels and an umbrella if needed. Another nice feature of this hotel was the one hour use of the hospitality/departure room (after we checked out) to freshen up before our late flight. We would definitely recommend staying at the Koa Kea to anyone going to Kauai. The exceptional personal service and attention we received while staying at the Koa Kea only enhanced our dream vacation.

We spent 8 days at the Koa Kea and all my plans for activities - golf, zip-lining, driving to the north side of the island were forgotten. We did drive to Weimea Canyon, but raced right back to the hotel. The pool is primarily salt water, and the tiki bar service poolside is outstanding. We had breakfast on our patio almost every morning - our server, Nicolas was so nice and accommodating. The hotel is very small, by the standard of the other hotels surrounding it. You must drive down the Marriott driveway, beyond their lobby area, into what appears to be a parking lot to find the Koa Kea. It is totally worth the search. Their restaurant, Red Salt, is also highly rated by tripadvisor and it is just steps from the rooms. There isn't good beach access directly in front of the hotel, but a walk of a hundred yards to the east and there is a sandy beach. The access in front of the Koa Kea is fine for young people, but a bit of a struggle for the older or infim folks. We took 50 photos of sunsets, each more spectacular than the previous.

Koa Kea at Poipu beach was the beautiful finale to my husband and I's ten day getaway to Hawaii. We stayed in hotels in Oahu and the Big Island, but our very favorite was Koa Kea! The service was phenomenal and the staff paid attention to every little need! They thought of every little detail to add comfort to the stay. My husband and I stayed in an ocean view room, what a view it was! The ocean was literally about 30 feet from our lanai, and the room itself was simply gorgeous! When we returned to our room the first afternoon, we found that they had left us champagne and a beautiful floral arrangement in our room, as well as a hand written note from the hotel manager Chris. When we thanked the wait staff for the generous and thoughtful gifts, we mentioned that we didn't drink, and within moments our bottle of champagne was exchanged for delicious Hawaiian made vanilla cream sodas! It was a very thoughtful gesture. Everyone from the valets to the front desk staff to the cleaning staff greeted us by name and treated us like royalty. We especially loved our valet Frank! The turn down service each night was also so very nice. Something else that was truly special is that even though check-out time was noon the day we had to depart, they allowed us to reserve time at their departure lounge (a reserved guest room) free of charge to shower and freshen up before our evening flight out of Lihue.
We truly cannot say enough nice things about this little piece of paradise! Thank you, Koa Kea, for a blissful stay! We hope to be back one day!

Great staff, food and property. Can't say enough good things about this hotel. We stayed in an ocean front room for 4 nights of our Hawaii trip and didn't want to leave. Staff was more than accommodating. We did a couples message and that was fantastic as well. We'll definitely be going back in the future.

Room Tip: Splurge for an ocean front room, you won't be disappointed

We stayed at Koa Kea for our honeymoon and loved it. The grounds are beautiful, the rooms are great. Staff was so friendly and helpful - they made everything so easy, from getting your car to booking activities to offering recommendations. Really loved the restaurant on site - had a fantastic breakfast there every morning, and a great dinner too. The pool bar had really good lunch fare and the best frozen drink I've ever had. We had wonderful massages at the spa. It's in a great location, waterfront with two large sections of Poipu's beach on either side (snorkeling is great - sea turtles!). A minutes drive from shopping and restaurants, and only a 30 min drive from the airport.

The place is really peaceful and quiet. Very few kids. Lots of couples. Right next door is the busier Marriott with a restaurant or two, but I'd rather stay at the Koa Kea - it's perfect if you want something a little more low key.

Room Tip: Try to get a room with a view of the waterfront - the sunsets are amazing.

This place is magnificent! Worth every penny! It is our five year anniversary so we splurged for the ocean front. Do it!!! So beautiful! We were given flowers and free champaign since they knew it was our anniversary. The hotel is perfect for couples. Definitely not for kids. It's a great romantic getaway. We will be back for sure. Listening to the ocean at night but still having the comfort of air conditioning, it doesn't get any better. We saw a manta ray out on the lanai and have a great view of people surfing. Sunsets are amazing! The location is great as well since we wanted to see Waimea Canyon as well as the Na Pali coast. This is definitely a five star hotel. Our tub was great as well as the shower with a rain shower head. Beautiful in every way! My husband accidentally put Dr. in front of his name on the reservation. Every staff member called him doctor the entire time. Impressive for them to remember even though it was his mistake.

If I could, I would give this hotel a 4.5 rating. We had a really nice, 2-night stay celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary but we were not given one of the better rooms in the hotel or any other special amenity. So, they lose a half-point there.

Many of the rooms in the hotel have direct ocean views, while others are more partial. Although we were told at check in that we were being upgraded to an ocean view, as far as i could tell, our room was only the partial ocean view that we paid for. (To see the ocean, one has to be near the window or standing on the lanai.) The lanai is nicely sized, with a table and chairs where we ate lunch one day. Our room had a large shower but no tub. It also had a nice sized refrigerator and an Nespresso coffee maker, which was great.

This property is centrally located right on Poipu Beach. It is a bit of a challenge to find the entrance from the road, especially as signage to the entrance is only visible going in one direction. But once you find it, no problem.

The very best thing about the Ko'a Kea is its uniformly outstanding staff. From the super friendly valets (who learned and used our last name within a day), to the check in staff, to housekeeping, to the maitre d' to the waiters in the excellent Red Salt restaurant at the hotel, this staff treats you as honored guests. The owners/managers obviously understand that you are paying a little more to stay at this hotel and that there are plenty of other nice resorts nearby, so they pay special attention to friendliness, courtesy, helpfulness and respect. It really makes a big difference when you feel as if the staff enjoy what they are doing.

The entire property has a cool/sleek feel to it, starting with the blue signage at the valet entrance and the foodie ambience of the Red Salt restaurant adjoining the lobby. The rooms are not fancy but are hip and comfortable. Even the logo mugs in the giftshop next to the front desk are cool; we had to get a couple as souvenirs to take home. Because of the relatively small size of the property, it has a relaxed feel to it, without tons of busy tourists running around.

This is a hotel that is more suited for adults/couples, than families with young children. It also appeared to be gay friendly. The pool area is well sized for a smaller property and overlooks the ocean. There is an activity hut where you can rent equipment and sign up for surf lessons, etc. Immediately out from the hotel, there are rocks but to the left or right you can easily reach a sandy beach. There is also a nice lawn area with lounge chairs for sunning and watching the expert surfers. Also, a bonus: there is a washing machine/dryer for guests to use. I am not aware of any other high end hotel that offers that.

Our room rate was part of a package that included breakfast and food credit. We had two nice breakfasts (continental buffet + one hot item to order from the menu) and one fabulous dinner at Red Salt. It is unusual to have a gourmet restaurant located right in the lobby of the hotel.

After we checked out and left the island, we got a phone call telling us that we inadvertently left some shoes in the room. The staff offered to box it up and mail it to our home address, using our credit card on file for the postage. Again, first class service.
