We spent 8 days at the Koa Kea and all my plans for activities - golf, zip-lining, driving to the north side of the island were forgotten. We did drive to Weimea Canyon, but raced right back to the hotel. The pool is primarily salt water, and the tiki bar service poolside is outstanding. We had breakfast on our patio almost every morning - our server, Nicolas was so nice and accommodating. The hotel is very small, by the standard of the other hotels surrounding it. You must drive down the Marriott driveway, beyond their lobby area, into what appears to be a parking lot to find the Koa Kea. It is totally worth the search. Their restaurant, Red Salt, is also highly rated by tripadvisor and it is just steps from the rooms. There isn't good beach access directly in front of the hotel, but a walk of a hundred yards to the east and there is a sandy beach. The access in front of the Koa Kea is fine for young people, but a bit of a struggle for the older or infim folks. We took 50 photos of sunsets, each more spectacular than the previous.
