“We made a reservation months before...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

We made a reservation months before our February arrival and my wife insisted we book an ocean front room. Great call! Our room was on the second level and we were literally 20 yards from the ocean with a gorgeous view from our relatively private deck. Great spot for watching the sunset, surfers, foot traffic, birds, swimmers, hearing the sounds of the waves, and taking in the constantly soothing breezes. Mandatory valet parking actually worked reasonably well at this place and was fairly priced at $15/day. This small hotel is a gem. Yes, you will pay to enjoy it but we felt it was worth it. Only a couple of minor gripes: breakfast not included, service at poolside bar was mediocre -- customers should not have to beg/plead for the chance to purchase $15 drinks.

Room Tip: You will pay more for it, but insist on an ocean front room on the second or third level if you can...

every person we encountered at this property was terrific to interact with. We actually packed up and planned on staying on the north shore for the balance of our vacation but missed this property and the vibe so much we turned around and spent our last night there to complete our family trip on a high note.

Room Tip: first floor convenience.

Just returned from a quick vacation in Kauai, and was fortunate to spend four nights of my stay at Koa Ke'a. Check in was a breeze, and we were in our room within 5 minutes of arriving at the property. I had booked a garden view room and ended up with a second floor room overlooking the pool area - and a decent view of the ocean from the balcony. The room was a little on the small side, however this was not a big deal as we spent most of our time outside the room anyway. The only issue I had was with the bed, which had a huge duvet comforter as well as a second down mattress pad underneath the fitted sheet. I am a warm sleeper as it is, and was unable to sleep the first night as I was too warm. A quick call to housekeeping the next morning took care of both the comforter and the mattress pad, and I had no issue sleeping after that. I also found it nice to have a small refrigerator in the room, as we were able to keep some cold water and beer to drink out on the balcony before heading to dinner. Bathroom was relatively spacious and the rainwater shower was great - much gentler on sunburn than a standard shower head.

After staying at the Hyatt on two previous stays to the island I enjoyed the smaller scale of the pool and hot tub area, and no kids running to get to a waterslide! We never had to get up early to stake out space by the pool, as there were always chairs in both the sun and the shade available. Pool service was excellent, with waitresses stopping by to check on you and offer pineapple slices every half hour or so. As is typical for a resort property drinks were expensive, but bartenders here were not shy with the liquor and you could sip on something for quite awhile. I don't think the pool was heated but it got pretty warm by the afternoon when it was sunny. The hot tub was a great place to hang out when the weather turned a little inclement - contrast of the hot water and rain was interesting. I am not a big beach person and did not miss having direct access to the beach, it was about a 5 minute walk to get to the large beach in front of the Marriott.

Our package included breakfast and it was nice to have both the cold buffet and a hot entree offered every morning. I would definitely recommend the lemon pineapple souffle pancakes, light and fluffy and not like anything I've had before. I will do a separate review of Red Salt, but I did find the lack of seasoning at both breakfast and dinner surprising for a restaurant with salt in its name. The sushi available in the lounge is phenomenal, and surpassed Red Salt on every level. Justin, the sushi chef, will customize rolls or sashimi to your particular tastes and was very helpful with suggestions. Try a poke bowl if you go! Jim the bartender was also very friendly and made a great drink! We would stop by for a nightcap and try something different every evening.

Staff away from the bar was also excellent. The hotel requires you to valet your car but we never had to wait for our vehicle - called down a couple minutes before heading out and it was waiting for us every time. Overall everyone was extremely friendly and I would argue the service is the top selling point of the hotel. We will definitely stay at Koa Ke'a again in the future, as we prefer the more intimate size of the hotel and the great service from the staff.

We chose to spend the first five days of our vacation here on the south shore of Kauai at the Koa Kea mostly because of the high TripAdvisor ratings. We were not disappointed by the service and attention. Everyone - especially the parking valets - were kind, pleasant and seemed to want to make sure we had the very best time possible.

When we arrived, we were told that we had been upgraded one room level from Garden View to Parital Ocean View. When I told her that we had booked (and paid for) Partial Ocean View, she said that indeed we had been upgraded to Ocean View. I don't think that was true as we had a room that faced into the pool area with a partial ocean view. No problems - we got what we had reserved but we had higher expectations before we got to our room.

We had breakfast the first morning at the Red Salt Restaurant in the hotel. Breakfast was delicious and the prices seemed reasonable. A couple of nights later, we had dinner at the same restaurant. One of the valets had recommended the steak but "warned" that it was expensive. Holy Cow! The steak dinner was $69! My husband and I both chose the chicken dinner and we shared a dessert - the root beer float and yummy cookie. It was all fine but much overpriced. As far as it being an upscale restaurant goes, it just didn't feel like one. At first, the host couldn't find our names on the list. Then he bumbled with some place settings at the host station while asking us to wait while he dealt with some unimportant tasks right in front of us. Our server was good but less attentive to us - this seems to happen to us and we think it might have something to do with the fact that we don't drink and we usually don't add a lot of extras to our meal. In all fairness, the food was some of the best we had while on Kauai, a place where all the food was expensive and much of the restaurant food was very disappointing.

Overall, the resort was most pleasant. . . Red Salt Restaurant was extremely good for dinner but seemed overpriced. Breakfast was included and was somewhat standard fare. Our partial oceanview room was adequate but not particularly comfortable. Watching the news on TV had to be done by sitting on the bed; the room was so small that the one non-desk chair would not fit in any TV-watching position. The valet, housekeeping, and wait staff were superb!!

Room Tip: Do not accept a room facing the east. . . . extremely dark.

I loved our room at this hotel. It had a refrigerator and they gave you bottled water daily. The room was spotless, I even saw the maids wiping the door down when they cleaned your room. Always had clean towels available. Every employee had a smile. They couldn't do enough for you. I was worried about the valet parking only because I hate waiting for my car, but they suggested calling down as you left the room and the car was always waiting for us. The bed was comfortable and the internet worked well. This was oceanfront, but not beachfront. I walked to the right which is the beach in front of the Sheraton, which was very crowded and not too nice. If you walk to the left it is Poipu beach park, also crowded with a lot of families, so I suggest either lounging the the resort pool or driving to another beach. Very few kids at this resort and we loved the peace and quiet. We never heard any noise here. We were very happy with our stay and would come back.

A small, boutique property on Poipu Beach, surrounding by condo resorts & the Sheraton, Ko Kea was a nice place to stay. The rooms were well appointed and of comfortable size. We could watch the sunset every evening from our room or our balcony. Room service was late & slow for breakfast, but breakfast much better in dining room. Housekeeping was slow to get our room clean and negected to provide us with some needed items even after we asked twice, but we finally did get them. An issue involving what our front desk check in person told us versus what another front desk person said was handled properly by the manger on duty when we checked out. It was nice that this place did not have a bunch of little ones running around like the other accomodations in Poipu did.
