“Want a beautiful, romantic stay?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

Koa Kea Resort is an oasis of beauty and romance in a pristine setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean. A renovation of an earlier hotel, it is decorated in a Pacific Rim style, which while being modern, is timeless. Designed in a horseshoe shape facing the ocean and surrounding the pool, hot tub and bar, there is plenty of lawn to relax on.The hotel appeals to either the romantic honeymooner or the baby boomer who wants to get away and relax. The staff is outstanding in attitude. No request is too small, and every one is responded to quickly. Red Salt, the restaurant on the property, allows the guests to settle in and never leave! Ocean view rooms have their own lanais, and breakfast can be ordered to the room so that you never leave the view. If you are looking for peace and romance, this is the place!

Room Tip: Ask for ocean view. Those on second or third floors have lanais.

Lovely, small boutique hotel. Almost all rooms seem to have a sea view, we faced west so had the sunset which was always spectacular.
There is only one restaurant,Red Salt, very chic, quite pricey but excellent food, quite European in portion size. It does get busy so booking is recommended. Breakfast is in the same restaurant but not so good. Poor selection of fresh fruit which seemed strange considering you are in the Hawaiin islands. The buffet breakfast is adequate but not up to usual hotel standard; there is also an a la carte breakfast menu which is expensive and the portions are huge. They would be better have a wider selection of buffet breakfast items and less a la carte.
A nice bar outside but this closed at 6.30 once the sun had gone down which seemed strange as it was the perfect setting to sit out and sip cocktails.
But the overall ambiance of the hotel was gentle, everyone was courteous and helpful and a glorious setting.
Plenty of eating places within a 5-10 min drive, even a short walk to many hotels and eateries.

Room Tip: Ground floor as access to the gardens. 2nd and 3rd floors easy access, lift available if needed; wo...

We were very excited to stay at Koa Kea, looked great, adults only, good location.
The location was very central, nice beach, and you could walk everywhere.
Why I am not giving it a better rating, is the atmosphere, it had no life, no energy. Not that I was looking for some sort of "party hotel", but I feel that as an adult hotel, they missed an opportunity to do something special. How about some music, a happy hour, a real gym...just too quite for me.
Rooms were nice, pretty spot, just not all that.

Everything from the staff, restaurant, spa, accommodations exceeded my expectations! Everyone was so welcoming and warm, the room was comfortable and had a wonderful view of the ocean. Red Salt is fantastic - we thought we'd try a restaurant at a neighboring hotel for fun, but ended up walking out before they could serve us to return to the Koa Kea! The valet remarked at how quick our return was, haha!

The pool and lawn area were so peaceful and both the indoor and outdoor bar areas are very well done. We had a late departing flight so on our last day we checked out of our room around noon and spent an afternoon at the spa. I had a wonderful massage, facial and scalp treatment. Afterwards, they offered us the use of their guest suite to pack a few things and prepare for the flight home. It was the perfect ending to an incredible experience.

I'm looking forward to my return trip to Kauai ... I will only ever stay at the Koa Kea!

Room Tip: We had an ocean view room and felt it was really worth the premium rate charged.

Last spring we were fortunate enough to be invited to Poi Pu, by our friends, to share in there rental home. We used it as a base to explore the island and fell in love with the beauty and activities of the north shore and appreciated the sun and relaxing of the South Shore. If Koa Kea had a sister property on the North Shore our life would be complete. We spent the final 5 days of our trip at Koa Kea and fell in love. It is perfect! From food to staff to location it could not have been better!

Very relaxing stay with great service and fantastic food at Red Salt restaurant. Stayed in an Ocean Front room and received upgrade to Ocean Front deluxe- 3rd Floor (highly recommend). Join IPrefer club for upgrade possibility. Watched whales from our balcony each morning and evening- at least 20 a day. Absolutely incredible! Will return next year.

Room Tip: Join IPrefer club to get possible room upgrade. Third floor Ocean Front recommended.

We spent a few days in this outstanding hotel. It is a very quiet hotel, where the staff will do everything to please you. The rooms are fabulous, the bed are so comfortable, that, when we came back home, we ordered the same pillows and mattress pad (the staff, very kindly gave us the brand and all details). The restaurant "the red salt" is a gourmet restaurant, simply amazing! They serve excellent cocktails too. Very nice other restaurants are 5mn driving from there (the staff can even book them for you). Beaches are all around, from walking distance. You leave for the day, no problem, you can bring beach towels with you. From the Koa Kea, you can visit the whole island. The valet parking service is prefect (you feel that you are a VIP). It is a quiet paradise compared to the Hotel next door. We cannot wait to go back! I would recommend this hotel for adults.
