“Beautiful Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2012

I stayed here in July 2009 with my husband. The hotel had just opened, so we received a screaming good deal on the room. It was a partial ocean view room for only $99/night. The views from the hotel are gorgeous, the grounds were well maintained and we found the staff to be quite helpful and friendly.

The rooms are beautiful. The colors (dark woods for the furniture and turquoise and white for the decorations) were warm and welcoming, the bed was to die for and the walk-in rain shower was wonderful.

The beach is not usable in front of the hotel, but a short walk to the left or right will get you to beautiful, sandy beaches.

We ate at the restaurant, Red Salt, one night, and found it to be delicious! Since it had just opened, there were only 2 other couples in the restaurant, so we received wonderful service.

Even though some people seem to think the pool is too small, my husband and I thought it was adequate for the size of the place. But then, we tend to like the not as invasive style hotels/mega resorts. The hotel is located a very short walk away from the Poipu Beach.

My only drawback about this hotel is the location. My husband and I preferred the northern part of Kauai, up by Hanalei. This hotel is quite isolated and a fairly tiring drive to get to the northern parts of the island. Poipu seemed like the area to go if you just want to stay in your mega resort, and not explore too many parts of Kauai. If you want to explore and want more things to do, I recommend staying closer to Lihue (at the Hilton) or up by Hanalei.

My wife and I stayed at Koa Kea during our honeymoon at the end of June/early July 2012 for a week. We were pleasantly surprised from the very beginning where the valet took our car (note: valet is mandatory and payed for by the $15/day resort fee but those guys earn it with their wealth of knowledge, suggestions, and directions) and we got a nice tour of the facility. Koa Kea is small (tiny, compared to most resorts on the island). Standing in the courtyard, you can see every room around you.

Small, doesn't mean limited though. There is a fantastic restaurant (Red Salt) on site where we enjoyed breakfast and dinner several times. If you go for breakfast, you must try the soufflé pancakes and the macadamia nut waffles. We were not impressed with the buffet that others rave about since there are no hot items on it (we expected eggs at least). For dinner, the lobster ravioli, Ono fish, and root beer float dessert were amazing. You can also get a flight of martinis which we thought was pretty cool.

There is also a very well kept fitness center, along with a mostly full service spa on site. I say mostly, because they didn't have a nail lady. We did however go into Lihue to get nails done at the mall, which was quick and dirt cheap (a place called ProfessioNail).

The pool, and hot tub were also wonderful. My only complaint would be that the outdoor bar closed by 6, which seemed early. For reference, the pool is open until 10 (or at least, that's more of a rule since the pool lights seemed to stay on all night).

We btw had an ocean view room. I read lots of complaints about the ocean view room looking at the pool so I was worried. I called way in advance and requested one that was closer to the water. We were pleasantly surprised with our room. Very nice king size bed, outdoor patio (that looked out at an angle at the water), small refrigerator, a fantastic shower (but no tub), and twice daily maid service. Your room also includes 6 Nespresso coffee pods and a coffee maker, 2 pints of Fiji water to start, and a new bottle left every evening, the Wall Street Journal, and a local paper left every morning. We were also surprised with a nice bottle of champagne (on the house) when we returned to our room the first evening (they knew it was our honeymoon).

All of this, combined with a really nice location (albeit, a touristy area but driving around isn't bad), left us having a wonderful time.

For reference, we HIGHLY recommend the book called The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook to help you get around and pick activities, places to eat, and a really good history lesson on the island.

Have fun and Aloha!

Room Tip: Ocean front is the best but unless you care about seeing the ocean from your bed, ocean view is nice...

I was on a 10 day work trip and had no choice in where I stayed. My wife came along because there were a number of off days, and I have to say we couldn't have been more pleased. I travel a lot and this is one of the nicest places ever, especially if you like the boutique style hotel compared to the bigger resorts. Very intimate, casual and extremely comfortable feel with great service all around. Room was beautiful, extremely comfortable bed, great shower, lanai with an ocean view, plus we made good use of the in room espresso maker . Probably spent the most time around the pool which also has a large hot tub and convenient bar. The breakfast and dinners at the Red Salt restaurant were some of the best we had on the island, and don't miss sushi nights on the on weekends
Very highly recommend Koa Kea !

Room Tip: Obviously you want to be as close to the ocean as possible. It can get a bit noisy if you're nea...

we spent a week in March at Koa Kea and loved every minute. The stay did not get off to a flying start with a room next to a screaming baby , they moved us to a different room without question and then a powercut, which to watch the staff & manager cope with all the people in the restaurant without any power really showed how much they cared.
The resort has a very good pool with comfy sunbeds, the room was very clean and comfortable, the restaurant is very good, just make sure you book the night before for the time slot you want as lots of people come from outside and it can get busy.
The staff are very helpful especially for organising trips.
we want to go back and already trying to plan our next Hawaii vacation and would highly recommend Koa Kea to anyone.

Room Tip: We had a room upstairs and this seem to be a lot more private & quiet

We booked the Koa Kea on the recommendation of our travel agent. It was absolutely the best hotel we could have had for our anniversary trip. The room was absolutely beautiful, from the feather king sized bed to the marble shower. The staff did everything within their capabilities to make our stay memorable, and enjoyable. I don't think I ever saw a staff member, from the grounds keepers to the front desk without a smile on their faces, and they were always asking if there was anything they could help us with, or if there was anything we needed. The Red Salt restaurant had delicious food. From the valet parking to the barefoot poolside bar, you got a feel of how wonderful this place really is

Room Tip: If you can afford it, choose a ocean front room, however, if you have to go for a partial ocean view...

We stayed four nights at the Koa Kea resort in room 278. Our room had a fantastic ocean front view with a balcony. The room itself was clean and large with all of the usual amenities plus a TV in the bathroom, if you like that sort of thing. One item that was somewhat bothersome was the feeling you were in a wind tunnel when our room door was shut and the balcony door was open - the wind would whistle and howl. We ended up placing a towel at the door and solved the problem. In regards to privacy, the balcony is exposed to the people in neighboring balconies and those walking by below. I suspect the same room on the third floor would offer a little more privacy from the people walking by. If you are looking for seclusion this is not necessarily the place, at least for our room. The gym: five treadmills, two stationary bikes, three elliptical machines, one weight bench and water. Only one other person was in the gym at the time so having one wight bench wasn't a problem. The spa - the massages were comfortable and relaxing. Although the Red Salt restaurant seemed a little overwhelmed by the number of guests at times, the food was very tasty. For breakfast the Lemon-Pineapple Soufflé’ Pancakes are particularly good! We rented a car so that we could explore the island and getting the car from the valet was never an issue. We had no use for the coin-operated laundry machines but I like idea of having this available. The entire property is beautiful! The staff are fantastic! Extremely polite and willing to help out at any time. Overall, very much a blissful and romatic getaway resort.

i spent a long time trying to pick between here and the st regis on the north shore for our honeymoon. we picked the st regis but stopped in at the koa kea to check it out and have a few drinks at the bar. first the north shore was one of the most beautiful places i have ever been to and the views from the st regis are incredible. its a bit more stuffy and family oriented that the koa kea appeared to be. the koa kea seemed like a bit of a party hotel and was definitely a boutique. i cant speak to the rooms, etc but the grounds were clean and staff was very nice.
