“Intimate Wedding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2011

Ko`a Kea Resort is a beautiful property and was the perfect location for our intimate wedding. We had an ocean front suite which I walked out the sliding glass door to meet my husband and guests. The location was spectacular and being on grass kept the ceremony private with a beautiful back drop of the ocean. Special thanks to Paul for setting up our wedding event plus playing guitar during our ceremony. Carole Koulbanis is the wedding planner for Koa Kea and she's incredible. She took care of everything including minister, flowers and setting up all the appointments. The day of the wedding was stress free and the entire day was relaxing for us due to Paul and Carole arranging everything perfectly. Carole and our photographer, Vilma Bergenholtz, were a great comforting factor even before we arrived in Kauai. Anna did a great job on my hair and makeup which is always a concern on your wedding day. Carole set up a small cake which was scrumptious and a champagne toast. The bridal bouquet was beautiful. Vilma took additional sunset pictures on the beach location which is off to the right of the property. I can't wait to see the pictures. After the ceremony, we had dinner at Red Salt which was delicious. We ended our night sitting on the patio of our suite with our friends listing to the ocean and having cocktails. It was exactly what we had in mind for our special day.

The staff was not only spectacular on our wedding day but on our entire 12 day stay at the resort. All of the staff was extremely accommodating, helpful and kind all of the time. They always greeted you with a smile and provided excellent service. They made sure you had everything you needed no matter if it was major or something as minor as getting you packing tape.

The hot tub and pool were great. The pool area is relaxing and not crowed feeling at all. The pool bar was fantastic with great service. It's the perfect location for drinks and lunch. It has a great view of the ocean so you could watch the surfers, catch a game and have a cocktail. You could find chairs either in the sun or under an umbrella with ease. You never found yourself waiting for a lounge chair in either location. You could also rent snorkel gear and get surf lessons on the property. This area is also perfect to watch sun sets. After the sun sets, the resort lights tiki torches which is a perfect place for a romantic conversation.

Valet service is included in the price of the room and the valet were very responsive in getting our car. Plus were very helpful for dinning suggestions and places to visit on the island.

The front staff was friendly and very helpful making arrangements for activities on the island. They made suggestions for vendors, booked the activity and always included directions for you. This was a nice service so you didn't have to search for phone numbers and call everyone directly.

The twice a day maid service was nice. The staff did a good job of keeping fresh towels and always made sure you had everything you needed. The evening turn down service was nice touch. You came back to a clean room with a bottle of chilled water by your bedside. The rooms and property was very clean.

We can't say enough good things about this boutique resort and the staff. It was the perfect location for our wedding. If you are looking to have a small intimate wedding location, this is the ideal resort.

Room Tip: Ocean front suites are fantastic

The photos on their website are exactly what the place looks like. What the photos can't show you is how great they treat their guests. From the valet parking, the bellhop, front desk, restaurant staff...they're all terrific. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't change a thing.

Room Tip: We were on the second of three floors, and didn't hear a thing for our entire stay. This place...

My husband and I stayed here for only 4 nights to celebrate our 10th anniversary. we spent 2 in an oceanfront and 2 in an ocean view room. This was the best hotel experience I've ever had. Our first room was an upgraded oceanview from partial ocean view and while the view was fantastic, we really wanted to hear the waves so when an ocean front room became available we took it! Our first room was near a door to the corridor so the first night we heard the door open and close and when we told the front desk they immediately sent someone up to fix the door. He made it close slower and quieter. The ocean view room is a tiny bit larger than the ocean front and the wifi signal was stronger. The hotel is U shaped so almost every room has a view of the ocean and if you are closer, you can hear the waves. The air con was not loud and did not interrupt our sleep and we liked that it operated with the lanai doors open. We also loved the valet experience. The valets were all nice and helpful. There were lots of outlets on the desk, which was handy. The rain shower is optional so if you prefer a regular shower you don't need to get water in your eyes. They sent us a bottle of champagne for our anniversary, which we appreciated. There were very comfortable cushions on the pool and lounge chairs so the property listened to the older reviews citing uncomfortable chairs. The self-laundry was very handy, plentiful, and inexpensive. $1 to wash and $1 for soap. The resort fee was also a good value compared to other properties, including internet and valet. The free bottled water was also nice. The food was amazing at breakfast. The buffet is $25 pp and includes one hot item in addition to an ample spread of fruits, meats, breads, cheeses. the little muffins and flavored butter they bring you are incredible. We had breakfast included in our package and the servers were great in explaining it even included gratuity. Dinner at Red Salt was also delicious and the sushi they have in the lounge area Friday and Saturday evenings was among the best I have had.
It was incredibly relaxing and serene. I only saw two children there for one day. I would NOT come here with children.
We took a surfing lesson (which was a blast) thru the activities hut and I thought their prices for that and beach rentals was very reasonable. At no time did I feel nickel and dimed after we arrived. The drinks are priced like Hawaiian resort drinks (but stronger) and the food is the same price as other places in the area but much better tasting.
The pool area is beautiful and the whirlpool is large enough to accomodate several couples although we always had it to ourselves. No one got up early to "claim' beach chairs as you see at other properties. There were plenty to go around and never felt crowded. I loved that they did not play pool music. It was quiet and gorgeous. The beds and linens were comfortable, I loved having a ceiling fan. The housekeeping was spot-on. I loved having turndown each night. I can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Sign up with Iprefer for an upgrade if avaiable. Ocean Front is worth the price.

We were referred here by Eddi Henry, owner of the Palmwood Bed & Breakfast on the North Shore.
Quiet and clean with excellent service and friendly staff. A trendy resort for couples looking to relax. Good beach access and a quiet pool, both great for lounging. If you wonder off the property to the Sheraton or Marriott, there are lots of kids around, so beware!! Food and drinks are good. Massages were amazing!
My only complaint is that the AC in the room and the ventilation system in the bathroom were both super loud awakening us several times in the middle of the night.
Overall, a great find!

Room Tip: We had a "garden view" with a patio that was connected to all other patios - it was not pr...

Stayed 7 nights in August, and this hotel fit our honeymoon goals perfectly. If you are looking in Hawaii for a less crowded, upscale hotel this is it. Hotel propery is located right on the ocean, and we stayed in the top floor facing out on to the ocean in an Ocean Front Deluxe room. Beautiful sunsets from our balcony, and fun to watch surfers.

Although we didn't take advantage of the spa the Red Salt restaurant was great for breakfast and the one dinner we had was great.

Whether you are using the hotel to just kick back in there is a quietness found there not in the larger resorts or the hotel serves as a launching point for other locations/activities-that is what we did-either way it was great.

Beds super comfortable, rooms quiet. turndown service great/timely. Pool and hot tub perfect.

Have fun!

Room Tip: Top floor corner room was great- although I would get any ocean front room you can.

Our choice to stay at the Ko`a Kea was thanks to our very thoughtful son who surprised us with a 5 night stay to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary! He had done his research and read the glowing reviews online regarding this hotel. Each contact he made with the concierge was greeted with friendly and informative help in setting up this surprise vacation for us.

We felt like we were treated like personal guests of the hotel and not just one of many people that were there. The marvelous part about this boutique hotel is that it felt like there were very few people there (even though most rooms were booked) and it never felt overrun or crowded at the pool and the rest of the grounds.

The rooms was elegantly decorated in a very classy, modern and peaceful decor and color scheme. It felt less like a hotel and more like a residence in that there were several decorative touches with the coral, aqua colored bedspread accent and even the wooden frame around the television. The bathroom felt almost like a spa with the marble tiles and large shower. The door was functional - I would like to have that for my own bathroom at home!

The outdoor spa was divine! It was noted that it didn't seem to reek of chlorine like so many public pools/spas can tend to do. Both the pool and the spa were very clean and inviting.

The restaurant was a delight! We ate there our first night and had a delicious meal and excellent service. The red salt and bread was outstanding!! What a hit and, of course, we had to buy some!

A perfect second honeymoon in every way and we are so lucky that our son picked out the Ko`a Kea for our special celebration. We both look forward to returning to our new favorite spot on the islands.

Room Tip: The partial ocean view is great - even though you aren't directly facing the ocean. Just make su...

We recently stayed at the Koa Kea for five nights and were glad we did. The well-maintained hotel offers an excellent restaurant with a knowledgeable staff, excellent service, and excellent access to a beautiful beach. Good snorkling opportunities are only a few steps away at Poipu Beach. The hotel only offers valet parking, which is included in the price of the room. The friendly staff can also be counted on for helpful advice about where to go and what to see on the island. The bottom line is that we will definitely stay here again. The only minor irritant concerned the restaurant (where we had dinner twice) ---the staff is a little too eager to remove settings for those who have finished eating. This unnecessarily "hurries" customers when there is no need to. Visitors should also know that this property is not visible from the main road and the road to it is marked with a small sign that is easy to miss (it is right next to the Marriott Waiohai).
