“Hidden 120 year old gem!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2010

This is the oldest hotel on the island. The images on their website do NOT do it justice at all. We stayed in room 303 which is a 1st floor (there's only 2 stories) room with a lanai. Upon opening your sliding door, you get a breathtaking view of the mountains. I never knew there were so many stars until I visited Kauai by the way. We sat outside at night looking at the stars and even caught a few shooting stars. Did I mention John Wayne stayed there at one time?
Anyway, they don't have a 24 hour desk, however Jamie and Joe, the owners are extremely nice and helpful.
I am kind of glad their description of the place was not too detailed because it was a pleasant surprise for us. The floor was made of wood so you don't get the nasty carpet other hotels offer. It is super quiet and it is near everything that has to do with the outdoors. Don't expect a resort, but do expect quality romantic time with your spouse or partner if you visit this place. Poipu beach is only 20 minutes away, the Wailua River is only about 15 minutes and Princeville is about 45 minutes if you want to head up north. Rent a car, do not rely on cabs, they are too expensive and unreliable. You will be glad you did.
What else can I say about this place other than it is just amazing. Oh yes, it has a self serve laundry room!!! So no having to pay $7 to have someone wash a pair of pants. We did two loads of laundry (wash and dry) for less than $10. I am going to set the option to allow for questions from travelers, and if you have any questions I will be more than happy to answer them for you.

Aloha!
Thank you so much for the amazing review! It's means do much to us to hear about our guests having a great time on Kauai and at the Kauai Inn! We hope to see you in the future if you ever make it back. The owners are Jami and Tom (not Joe), my parents. I do all of the marketing and graphic/web design. Redoing our website one of these days soon! Thanks again

Mahalo,

We booked 6 days on line but when we got there decided to stay the whole two weeks because it was such a great value and the people that ran it were all so great. It is an older accomadation but the rooms are clean and the grounds are kept lovely. We enjoyed the breakfasts of fresh fruit, bagels etc every morning and were happy to have the fridge and microwave in our room. We made use of the on site barbeque and laundery facilities. We would definatley go back here and would recommend it to anyone looking for good quality budget type accomadation.

We stayed here for three weeks with a four day mid vacation stay in Princeville. The location is the best in Kauai and the hotel has all of the amenities of a resort hotel without the commercialism. It is owner operated by a wonderful extended family who take beautiful care of the place and who host a generous fruit and breads laden buffet every morning.

We travel to Hawaii 2-3 times a year a stay in different hotels, usually spending $200 for a small and dirty room per night. But the kauai Inn was $99 per night and was extremely clean. We were a little suprised when we drove into a residential neighborhood and saw 3 pit bulls at the front door, but the dogs were very nice and so were the people that ran the Inn. We will stay here again. I had to think really hard for a negative and the only one was the park that is behind the hotel, which got a little loud at night. This isa a public park and the front desk did warn us.

We really enjoyed our stay at Kauai Inn, it was exactly what we were looking for. We planned to not spend much time at a hotel while in Hawaii, and we are not "hang out at the beach" types. We planned to do a lot of hiking and just needed a home base in/near Lihue that was clean, insect-free, and well-maintained.

It's about 2-3 miles from the airport, very close to the cruise ship harbor area (Nahilwili I think). It's a bit of a drive to the extreme northwest and southwest areas of Kauai, but still not more than 60-90 minutes. The approach to the hotel is not very pretty, but the inn itself, esp. at night with the tiki torches, looks quaint and natural.

The room had AC, but we didn't use it (we were there in Jan). The windows/walls are indeed "thin", and you can hear at lot going on outside, but it didn't hurt our sleep at all. Except of course for the roosters, but that's a given anywhere on Kauai. I will say that we also stayed a night at the Aston Aloha, and the roosters were a little quieter, but still very audible.

We paid $99/night. That's more than I had wanted to pay, but after some research I think that was on the low end for a 3-night stay. We did see some cheaper places, but we were unsure as to if we could trust the quality at those places. Our room had no carpet, and the shower had no threshold that separated it from the rest of the bathroom. We laid the towel down in front of the shower curtain, and there was no problem at all with splattering or run-off into the rest of the bathroom.

The morning breakfast had pluses and minuses in my opinion. First, the fresh fruit that comes out w/breakfast is GREAT! Some of it is grown by the owner on another property, and those pieces are extraordinarily juicy and sweet. The coffee was good, Kauai Coffee I think. The bread was good - bagels, white/wheat toast, muffins, danishes. I wish they had at least some corn flakes and milk, but no dice. They did have very good organic oatmeal one morning (I don't normally like oatmeal much, but with some honey this was pretty good). My biggest complaint about breakfast is that it's only served from 8:15 - 9AM or something like that.

We were very much dependent on internet, and I asked about this when I called to make a reservation. They did their best and gave us a room across the courtyard from the main office where their router is located. I was able to pick up a weak signal, and the internet was very usable. I would guess that maybe 50% or less of the rooms might have good signal, but you can always sit in the courtyard by the pool and get good reception.

Bottom line: don't go here if you want surf/sand, but it's a good jumping off point to explore Kauai. Breakfast is good (esp. quality) but limited in scope and hours of operation (coffee available 24 hrs). The inn itself is clean and reasonably maintained (don't expect new-looking though). The king bed was comfortable. We will definitely stay here again. BTW, the only reason we went to the Aston Aloha on the last days was because we got a rate of $89, and it was a little closer to the north shore where we were going that day.

Regular place with a quiet setting and great staff. Clean and confortable. Set away from in semi-rural area yet close to town.

The hotel is very clean the room are reasonnable size and the staff is friendly. The breakfast was simple but very good and they have a nice barbecue area that you can use anytime. There is almost everything to make your stay very confortable except for the privacy... There is not really windows you can close and you can here everything happening outside and vice versa. Also for this price even if it is not the most expensive on Kauai they could upgrade their wirless connection as only few rooms can receive it.
Besides that nothing bad to say about this place.
