My husband and I just returned from a week stay at the Kaha Lani. It was wonderful!

Let me preface my review by saying that I grew up in Hawaii, and although I live on the mainland now, we typically return to Hawaii once or twice a year because we love it so much.

So I am well aware of the rooster situation on Kauai.

We stayed in Unit 206 which we booked directly from the owner via VRBO. It was a fantastic unit. Although not truly oceanfront, the unit has been updated and features wood floors, tiled bathrooms, granite countertops and stainless appliances in the kitchen. There were a few other units for sale in the complex and having open houses, so we took the opportunity to take a peek at them. Of the few we saw, unit 206 was much nicer.

There were tons of extras in this unit: great beach chairs, 6 beach towels, beach mats, coolers, a beach UMBRELLA (which I have never seen in other units before) and tons of extra towels, pillows, blankets and sheets. The kitchen is fully stocked, and the gas bbq grills at the pool are great. The only thing that needs to be changed is the couches - they are looking very old and worn in my opinion. No washer and dryer inside this unit.

The roosters were horrible. Of all the properties that I've ever stayed at on Kauai, these were the worst. We discovered that the roosters were actually roosting in the trees of the complex, so were at the same place every morning at 4am when they began crowing every minute or so. There happend to be one right outside our window. Yes, I got used to it by the end of the week, but moms with children might not like it, along with any other light sleepers. Most entries in the guest book complained about the roosters. A gentleman that we met who lives in his unit full time told us that they were going to try to start trapping them. IMHO they need to try something, rather than do nothing.

As I said, I am FULLY aware of the chicken situation, and agree that they lend a bit of "charm" to the experience, but this particular complex has a problem because of the nesting that they are doing.

Anyway, that aside, I highly recommend this unit and the property to others. The location is fantastic for accessing all parts of the island without too much travel time. Just bring earplugs.

Sep 16, 2008 | Trip type: Family

Our family (including kids aged 7, 5 and 1) spent the first 3 days of our Kauai trip at Kaha Lani and were delighted with the accommodations. We stayed in the Kim family's condo, #201. The ocean-view, 2-bedroom, 2 bath we received was very clean (nary a bug or gecko, much to my sons' disappointment), and fairly updated. Housekeeping came every day. The unit also had a washer/dryer and lots of goodies left by previous visitors, such as beach mats, boogie boards, a radio, etc., so we didn't have to spring for extras that we couldn't haul home anyway.

Our view was of the bushes just in front of the beach, the pristine pool, and the manicured lawns with their GINORMOUS snails (kids love 'em).

Understand that no a/c may be a problem if you are used to living in dryer climates, because you will HAVE to sleep with the windows open to catch the trade winds. While this is cool enough, it also means you get to hear the constant pounding of the surf (which I loved) and the awful, AWFUL, ruckus of the darned roosters who start somewhere around 1 a.m. and sound off like clockwork each hour thereafter. You can't kill legally kill them. I asked.

Also, while you are steps from the beach, don't plan on going in the water right there since there is no reef to keep you from being dragged out, or the portuguese man of war from washing up (saw lots of those). And since all beaches are open to the public, plan on seeing lots of people living out of their beater-cars, fishing for a living, and sleeping in the back seat. This can be overlooked (literally, since they park behind the bushes and you don't see them from the condos) but it does kind of kill the exotic-island theme. Lydgate beach is just next door, which is great for kids, and then there are all the other beaches which are just minutes away.

I grew up visiting family in Kauai and this was the first time I went as a tourist (staying in non-family accommodations), and for this price, the privacy, cleanliness, and competency of the staff were outstanding. Just a note: a doorknob handle did come off in my hand, and one of the kitchen cabinet doors was starting to come off its hinges when you opened it, but these were minor inconveniences.

What a great, laid-back place to stay. Cute, clean condo with a spectacular view and tropical breezes. Walking distance to Lydgate park, a great beach for kids and novice snorkelers.

You won't regret staying here. If we ever get back to Kauai, we'll definitely stay at Kaha Lani again.

We just got back from vacationing in Kauai. The last two days of our vacation were spent at Kaha Lani and it exceeded my expectations. I have to be honest I wasn't expecting much, so when we arrived I was thrilled with the location and the hospitality. They were so kind and accommodating. We reserved a 1bedroom oceanfront condo and they messed up and gave us a 2 bedroom oceanfront condo. They were great and left it as is and gave us the 2 bedroom. When we opened up the door, we were blown away by the view. It was breathtaking. It was so nice to open up the sliding door and listen to the ocean every night. The beach that is right across the lawn is fantastic and pretty private. There is no AC, at least in our unit, and it made for getting ready in the morning brutal for a woman with long hair. Also, they were doing repairs on the unit below us and shut off our water an hour before were to check out. Of course, after being on the beach that morning, we wanted to shower before checking out. They gave us keys to another condo and let us use the shower there. They were very sorry for the inconvenience. I would definitely recommend this place. Don't expect 5 star, pool boy service, but it definitely is a fantastic 3 star hotel.

We loved our time at the Kaha Lani (unit 115) We stayed ther Mar 8-16. The condo had everything that we needed. It is a ground floor unit with an oceanview. It is set back a bit so is protected from the wind. We loved the central location on the Island. Made visiting other parts of Kauai so easy. Never had any problem with traffic around Kapa'a. We booked throught Garden Is. Properties and they were great, so we didn't really have too many dealings with the resort itself, but all the employees that we did speak with were very friendly and helpful. The grounds of Kaha Lani are spectacular, the landscaping is beautiful and very well cared for. The pool is very nice and we used it pretty much everyday. Lydgate Park is a very short walk away, great protected swimming area. We would for sure stay here again!!
