My husband and I just returned from a week stay at the Kaha Lani. It was wonderful!
Let me preface my review by saying that I grew up in Hawaii, and although I live on the mainland now, we typically return to Hawaii once or twice a year because we love it so much.
So I am well aware of the rooster situation on Kauai.
We stayed in Unit 206 which we booked directly from the owner via VRBO. It was a fantastic unit. Although not truly oceanfront, the unit has been updated and features wood floors, tiled bathrooms, granite countertops and stainless appliances in the kitchen. There were a few other units for sale in the complex and having open houses, so we took the opportunity to take a peek at them. Of the few we saw, unit 206 was much nicer.
There were tons of extras in this unit: great beach chairs, 6 beach towels, beach mats, coolers, a beach UMBRELLA (which I have never seen in other units before) and tons of extra towels, pillows, blankets and sheets. The kitchen is fully stocked, and the gas bbq grills at the pool are great. The only thing that needs to be changed is the couches - they are looking very old and worn in my opinion. No washer and dryer inside this unit.
The roosters were horrible. Of all the properties that I've ever stayed at on Kauai, these were the worst. We discovered that the roosters were actually roosting in the trees of the complex, so were at the same place every morning at 4am when they began crowing every minute or so. There happend to be one right outside our window. Yes, I got used to it by the end of the week, but moms with children might not like it, along with any other light sleepers. Most entries in the guest book complained about the roosters. A gentleman that we met who lives in his unit full time told us that they were going to try to start trapping them. IMHO they need to try something, rather than do nothing.
As I said, I am FULLY aware of the chicken situation, and agree that they lend a bit of "charm" to the experience, but this particular complex has a problem because of the nesting that they are doing.
Anyway, that aside, I highly recommend this unit and the property to others. The location is fantastic for accessing all parts of the island without too much travel time. Just bring earplugs.
