Our family (including kids aged 7, 5 and 1) spent the first 3 days of our Kauai trip at Kaha Lani and were delighted with the accommodations. We stayed in the Kim family's condo, #201. The ocean-view, 2-bedroom, 2 bath we received was very clean (nary a bug or gecko, much to my sons' disappointment), and fairly updated. Housekeeping came every day. The unit also had a washer/dryer and lots of goodies left by previous visitors, such as beach mats, boogie boards, a radio, etc., so we didn't have to spring for extras that we couldn't haul home anyway.
Our view was of the bushes just in front of the beach, the pristine pool, and the manicured lawns with their GINORMOUS snails (kids love 'em).
Understand that no a/c may be a problem if you are used to living in dryer climates, because you will HAVE to sleep with the windows open to catch the trade winds. While this is cool enough, it also means you get to hear the constant pounding of the surf (which I loved) and the awful, AWFUL, ruckus of the darned roosters who start somewhere around 1 a.m. and sound off like clockwork each hour thereafter. You can't kill legally kill them. I asked.
Also, while you are steps from the beach, don't plan on going in the water right there since there is no reef to keep you from being dragged out, or the portuguese man of war from washing up (saw lots of those). And since all beaches are open to the public, plan on seeing lots of people living out of their beater-cars, fishing for a living, and sleeping in the back seat. This can be overlooked (literally, since they park behind the bushes and you don't see them from the condos) but it does kind of kill the exotic-island theme. Lydgate beach is just next door, which is great for kids, and then there are all the other beaches which are just minutes away.
I grew up visiting family in Kauai and this was the first time I went as a tourist (staying in non-family accommodations), and for this price, the privacy, cleanliness, and competency of the staff were outstanding. Just a note: a doorknob handle did come off in my hand, and one of the kitchen cabinet doors was starting to come off its hinges when you opened it, but these were minor inconveniences.
