Okay, If you have watched even one episode of the Fantasy Island T.V. from the 70's, you've already seen these falls. However, 40 years later, that means a LOT of younger people have not seen these falls.
This waterfall is REALLY close to Lihue and therefore, if you are on the island for any length of time, you will pass the turn-off to visit these falls several times. Take the turn off at least one of those times.
Wailua Falls are best after a large rainfall in the mountains. They are just great the other times.
Parking at the falls gets really crowded. There is only one road in and one road out and it ends at the waterfall. Parking is limited so consider parking at a wide spot near the falls. You will know when you are near the falls because of the installation of chain-link fencing to keep people away from the edge of the cliff.
Tripadvisor listed swimming as part of the attraction. DO NOT ATTEMPT! There is a trail to the base of the falls. The locals know where it is. It is extremely steep and extremely slippery when wet. Which, this close to the wettest place on this planet, is virtually ALL OF THE TIME! Take some pictures. You'll enjoy the memories better than a visit to the local hospital (which is conveniently located just a few miles away).
Your visit to these spectacular falls will probably be short so make them a stop along-the-way.
