“Best meal in Kauai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2007

What a great place - excellent location and great Italian food. We had dinner there on the last evening on a 4 night stay in Kauai and this was by far the best we had on the island. It was also a full moon night so we had excellent views of the little bay they have in front of the restaurant and an opportunity for some great photos.

The Marriott itself is also nice to visit - be there at 9AM for the fish feeding near the main reception area - great!

“Quiet and romantic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2007

Fabulous Italian food! Our server had excellent suggestions for appetizers and wine. Previous reviewers have said it's not for kids, and that is true. It is not a family restaurant. One of the best meals we had on the island. Trio of sorbets...orangepassion, guava and mango...wonderful!

“Very disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2006

Perhaps we had a bad night, with a student chef, but we cannot understand how this restaurant won awards. And we do love Italian food and have eaten in many fine restaurants in the US and Italy.

The service was fine, and the harpist a nice touch. But what fine restaurant serves the same side dishes with all entrees?
My husband ordered chicken marsalla (received veal) which he said was average at best, and I ordered the Shrimp prvencial, a shrimp in a red sauce, tasty, about a B-. The thing that got us was that both came with garlic green beans, ok, and a plop of Au grautin potatoes. Bad enought with marsala, but with shrimp in red sauce? When the waitress finally came over to inquire how we liked the meal (when we were done) we told her of our disappointment, and she recommended we speak with the manager. Well, after he sat chatting with some local guests, he then disappeared, and we finally gave up after 10 more minutes.
So, pretty atmosphere, pleasant wait staff but no where near an award winning restaurant in our opinions.

“Pretentious; Not for Families”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2006

We immediately knew we were not welcome. While we failed to anticipate the formal atmosphere that would greet us at this particular restaurant, we chose to follow through with our reservation and were confident our kids would rise to the occasion. (Our kids are young but fairly well traveled and generally at ease in adult situations.) Though we did not delay in choosing what to order, an entire hour elapsed before any food arrived to the table. The owner was completely unsympathetic when we raised the issue about the tardy service, and again when we brought to his attention an error in one of the items we ordered. On the upside, our cocktails were expertly prepared.

“Best Italian food ive had in years!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2006

My wife and I, and a few freinds went to Kauai on a diving trip.
We absolutley love Italian food! When we found out about Cafe Portofino,
and heard it was the best Italian restaurant on the islandwe had to check it out. We were very suprised on how great everything was. From the food, to the live harp music. The veal was awesome, cooked perfectly with a lemon piccatta sauce! The wine list was awesome as well. Also the music was wonderful, played live by what seemed to be a very talented musician. I can see why they have as many awards as they do. We all had a great time and the owner of the restaurant was very helpful in getting us a great table overlooking the bay. He was very carismatic and sweet to us! We travel all over the world, and have eaten at many Italian restaurants and this is definatly one of the best.

Recommended Very Much! A+
