I loved the eats at the Oki Diner. I've been to HI 6 times total and Kauai is my favorite island. I am a repeat customer at Oki and would bring all my friends there if the airfare wasn't so expensive from New Jersey!

We had four different plates. The mahi in garlic sauce was ok. Portion was generous and it wasn't terrible. The omelet was pretty tasteless and way overpriced. It had american cheese or velveeta inside, and came with two "toaster brown" hash browns. Yuck. The Hawaiian specialty plate had Kahlua beef (not bad), Lau Lau (pretty good) and Teriyaki beef (just ok). There is only one salad dressing, and it's not too good. The macaroni salad was awful.
At least it was nice sitting outside on the terrace.
This restaurant is a TOTAL DINER experience with local style and "campy"decor. I loved the breakfast so much we stopped there 4 times to eat. I ordered The pancakes plain with just butter, regular syrup, fried eggs and bacon. I swear these were the best pancakes. My husband ordered pancakes, eggs and Portuguese sausage and fried rice, YUM, YUM:) Good place to eat because if your like me resort breakfasts all start to taste the same. I think the pancake batter is made by the owner daily. I 'm looking for the recipe online. Anybody out there know it?
After non-memorable snack on the way to airport, I was told the credit card reader was not operative and I needed to pay with cash. A small meal, salad and Saimin bowl, only $15. I was asked if I wanted change for my $20 bill, and, figuring 20% tip, indicated yes. That was the last sighting of waitress, who was behind counter incommunicado and incapable of eye contact as I finally exited premises.
A five dollar tip for small bill, not a big deal, but I had the feeling of being iced the moment she left the table.

On a recent trip to Kauai we decided to be adventurous and try something new instead of our tried and true places. Although we read mixed reviews on various websites, we decided to give the Oki Diner a try. What a BIG mistake! The waitress said their speciality was the Slavonic Steak. Slavonic Steak is thinly slice strips of beef simmered in a butter, garlic, cream and wine sauce. The steak was so tough, we could hardly chew it. I left over half my meal on the plate. The waitress also recommended the Lau Lau. This is one of my husband's favorite Hawaiian dishes so of course he had to try it. The Lau Lau looked like 2 logs on the plate. The meat inside was dry and tasteless and we couldn't find any butterfish either.
