We spent our honeymoon in Kauai and did not regret it at all. KBR was an excellent place to stay overall and despite some minor flaws did not disappoint.
PROS:
Location, location, location - This is a perfect home base for seeing all the island. If you're staying in the North end, it's a pain to get around everywhere. We drove up there one day and found the roads (one lane bridges) and whatnot to be more congested and less accessible than being central in Lihue.
Value - excellent value. You get a solid hotel without breaking the bank. You can't expect everything but overall the value is clearly evident. Rooms were nicely furnished and very good overall. Room keys did not give us issue contrary to what others mentioned. Good housekeeping, they kept away from your items and worked around them. Highly recommend to do a breakfast plan if available. I believe we paid an extra $10 per day for breakfast for two which was a screaming hot deal (the hot buffet was $20 EACH for those who didn't have a plan). Some meat/starch items were rotated around to ensure some variation. Made it easier to start the day off right! Restaurant for evening dining is great as well - we were full and the food was very good. Well run hotel overall.
Outdoor amenities - the pool area is fantastic! Waterfall effect, multiple pools, and a sand-pool with waterslide. Two hot tubs. The grounds and pool area were regularly maintained and kept immaculate. Forget how old you are - make sure you try the waterslide. Laying down, it went super fast and was a blast for me. A man in his 30's watersliding a half-dozen times - priceless.
CONS
Parking - the parking was not too far away contrary to what others indicated (maybe 100-200m to main door) but they were doing construction in the parking lot and some nights it was tough to find space (they didn't tow us away one night for "making our own" stall). Their $13 self-park and $16 valet are likely unavoidable if you're wanting to explore the whole island. Tip to save you a few minutes - walk in the side door by the ramp which leads into the coffee shop - much faster!
Staff - as with many hotels, it is hit and miss. Some seemed irritated to help you, while others are fantastic. We interacted with a few dozen associates and only a handful were sub-par. I faxed a letter to the hotel indicating it was our honeymoon and they graciously offered us champagne (great pre-vacation experience). I believe they also upgraded our room as it was one of the nicest views, but that made complications later with getting our breakfast vouchers (they give you one each for every day of your stay, so we had 14 vouchers and they included service fees/grat - we gave a smaller tip anyways) and champagne. Glad I was able to sort it out.
Room safe - was not functional during our stay. The hotel's age and wear/tear in certain areas show if you're really nitpicky. This was not a dealbreaker for us.
Room Tip: - Get at least pool view or oceanview. 2420 was our room (note room safe not functional)
- Breakfas...
