“Don't Hesitate to Stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

We are Marriott timeshare owners and have stayed at this property three times and will be back again this year. Over the years, we have stayed on many different parts of the Island. Each area has it's pros and cons. As other reviews have noted, if you are looking for granite countertops and stainless steel appliances this is not the right choice for you. Some of the things we like about this hotel is that it has a very central location to all parts of the island and is just a few minutes to the airport. My hubby loves the fact that it sits in a cove which makes stand-up paddle boarding and surfing easier because the waves are generally more calm. We also love the pool area along with both the beachside grill and the nicer restaurant which overlooks the pool area. We also enjoy walking around the many acres of property each morning. Unlike many of other reviewers, we don't mind the chickens and roosters...we figure that's what makes Kauai...well Kauai :o). This last time, we stayed in an ocean front parlor room which was very small, but met our needs with the small kitchen, etc. We loved the ocean view and sat on the balcony often. For whatever reason, we really enjoy watching the cruise ships coming in to dock and then departing...it's really pretty cool. We also like walking over to Kalapaki Joe's to watch our Denver Broncos play each Sunday. My in-laws also joined us on the trip and they love this place and can't wait to get back. The cons are that this is an older property and Lihue isn't known to be the the most glamorous part of the island...that would be Poipu and Princeville. Anyway, I guess it's all what you make of it...we're happy just to be in Hawaii!!!

Overall, based on our experience, this is a very nice resort. The pool and beach are great for kids and the resort is well run. The housekeeping, groundskeeping, and bell staff all are personable and helpful. Its clear, based on how beautiful it was kept that they care. The beds were fine and comfortable. We stayed in an ocean view room and had the screen door to the lanai open the entire stay (high 60's to low 80's during our stay). It was great to fall asleep listening to the crashing of the waves! The onsite food service staff were also very nice and attentive, although we did get an out of the way table at the poolside restaurant, we think due to dining with our two daughters, ages 8 and 10. There are also a lot of restaurant choices within walking distance of the resort. Dukes is great for a evening cocktail and dessert.

The hotel is a great location to use as a launching pad to visit the rest of the island, sort of located equidistant from the two ends of the highway that almost rings Kauai (the Na Pali coast prevents the highway from connecting on the northwest side of the island).

The extra activities from torch lighting ceremonies to Santa's visit on the beach via outrigger canoe made this a memorable visit for our family over the holidays. Our only complaint is the cycle on which the housekeeping staff "touched up" the rooms. We ran out of soaps and shampoos and had to ask a couple of times to get additional supplies.

Other than that, we had a really enjoyable visit and the Marriott Kauai Beach Club contributed greatly to our experience.

Room Tip: Absolutely get an ocean front or ocean view room. The mountain or garden view rooms seem lacking an...

This property is tired and worn and needs refurbishment in order to compare to other Marriott vacation clubs around the world. Carpeting in room very worn and the toilets were running on occasion. Curtains in one of the room were shreded, which the staff did replace but they should have seen that themselves. Also, the pool heater was broken and water was icy cold until the last day of our stay. That said, the employees were very friendly and the beach was incredible - best body surfing I've experienced (and the ocean was quite a bit warmer than the pool). Marriott, please refurbish this property ASAP!

The resort itself was beautiful and the location is excellent. This was our first trip in Hawaii and had a great time. However the service was extremelly poor. Since we work for Marriott we get a special rate and dont get housekeeping regularly..which they failed to tell us. We have stayed at other Marriots all over the world and this has never ever happened. I wasnt that pissed about them not coming in and making the bed or dusting, but fresh towels and take out trash at least would of been nice, We had a pile of towels and trash in our room..it was awful. They apologized and sent someone with fresh towels and took the trash, but it really did ruin our last day there. We were there 7 days and only got service once. Apologies alone was not enough to make this ok...i really think they could of handled this much better.

Ocean front location on Kalapaki Beach can not be beat, but...
First the good- Steven the Bellman is great as is most of the staff
Including Dickie Chang for the orientation. Now, but...
As a hotel it is very nice, but as a timeshare is lacks a lot.
Tiny, tired furniture, old plumbing, shredded curtain sheers, only a fridge and microwave so even the title of Limited Kitchen is very misleading.
There is a ton of delayed maintenance.
It is not a Gotta Go kinda place.
Sorry folks I do not like writing negative reviews, but...

Rube

Overall this was a nice resort. The pool is great for kids and the resort is well run. Beds were comfortable but the air conditioning was a little unpredictable at times. There is a lot of choice walking distance outside the resort for eating and Dukes was great for a evening cocktail. The Italian restaurant was also pleasant but the man on the front desk was a little pretentious and rude.

We booked a helicopter ride through the hotel and that was great as they picked you up at the hotel and dropped you back. Also the beach off at the hotel is very nice.

I would have preferred to be in a hotel where there is no time share accommodation - that is the only negative.

We spent Christmas week at this hotel. It is the third time we’ve stayed here. We find the hotel to be grand in many ways, including its immense statues, lush trees and plants, and museum worthy artifacts and artwork.

We appreciate the layout and location of the hotel. The lobby, gardens, terrace and pool are all spectacular. Once you descend the escalator you are in a huge, lovely indoor/outdoor area containing ponds with koi fish, nene, a black necked swan, Chinese duck and a talking cockatoo that whistles and spins around on a branch. Benches are conveniently placed around winding paths in the garden and by the rock waterfall.

The hotel is located on Kalapaki Beach and you see the Hoary Head Ridge behind the harbor. The hotel has lounges on a grassy lawn by the beach. The beach is fine for swimming and great for volleyball.

The hotel is adjacent to the Kauai Lagoons. It is an easy walk, shuttle or elevator ride up to the lagoons. I recommend that you go up there for walks or hikes. You can take easy walks by the golf course or to the shoreline. We walked to the lighthouse, which is on a cliff and offers great views of the harbor and the mountains. The airplanes fly only a few hundred feet overhead as they descend to the airport.

We stayed at a one bedroom two bath timeshare unit at Kiholana Tower with a kitchenette and an oceanfront view. Our daughter slept on a murphy bed, which we kept down all the time. Housekeeping came in every day to make the bed and to turn it down at night. We have no complaints about the room. Our only regret is that the balcony was not a little larger.

The hotel has several excellent restaurants. One restaurant, Kukui’s, is located next to the pool and includes a sushi bar. You can order from either the traditional Pacific Rim menu or the sushi menu. We were surprised at how good the food was at Kukui’s, which is not mentioned in the travel guides, unlike Duke's or Portifino's . Kuk.ui's has a Mongolian beef appetizer that is filling enough for dinner. When ordering breakfast, make sure you ask about the specials. We had a shrimp omelet that was very good.

The timeshare offers a Monday morning orientation. I suggest you attend. Eddie Chang is funny and informative. We learned many things about Kauai each time we've attended

We really appreciate the location of the hotel. Because there is no road that circumnavigates the entire island, Lihue is halfway between the northern and southern parts of the island. That allows us the flexibility and convenience of an easy drive to both the north and to the south. As a result, when it is raining in Lihue, it only takes about a half hour to drive to sunny Poipu and Waimea. It took us about 45 minutes to drive to the Kilauea Lighthouse and Princeville. Another good thing about the location is that we were able to enhance our dining experiences by enjoying the local, less touristy restaurants in Lihue and Kapaa.

All told, for the third time we enjoyed an excellent week at the hotel.
