The four days previous to our stay in Kauai were at the J.W. Marriott in KoOlina, Oahu, and we hated to leave! ... So, upon arriving at the Marriott in Lihue, we were a little disappointed. Our friends had arrived before us and had checked into their hotel room, we traded our timeshare and had to wait to get our 1 bedroom suite. The front desk gave us a beeper and held our luggage while we met our friends on the beach, before going up to thier room for a while. Their room had a decent view, but was a little scary. Kind of worn, with a mildewey smell that makes you think "old". Their room also had a very strange configuration, a king bed and a queen bed sqeezed into the room making it feel crowded, and really dated. Overall I was a little apprehensive about what our accomodations would be like. In any case, at 4pm we received our buzz and off we went to discover our future. The future is much brighter on the time-share side. Our room, which was furnished similar to our firends hotel room, had a much more pleasing, open feeling. Still had the same rather unappealing decor, but the space alone made it feel a lot more comfortable. The rooms ARE dated, even the "recently" overhauled time-share conversions. The ceilings were pretty grungy looking, and bathrooms could have been cleaner, but the property itself, common areas, etc. are very well kept and quite beautiful. The beds were not too comfortable, and the food (at least the buffet), was not too good either. Order from the menu, and it's MUCH better. We didn't find the staff to be as friendly or accomodating as the J.W. in Oahu, but didn't find anyone who was rude either. The location is pretty great, as it's accessible to anywhere on the island. We been to Kauai three times, once at a resort that is no longer in operation, once at the Hyatt (great property - no complaints), and this time at the Marriott. I'd probably prefer the Hyatt, but after a day of getting used to the property, became pretty comfortable with the accomodations, and the resort has its own appeal. Everybody raves about Dukes, it was OK, the Italian Restaurant next door was probably my favorite, with the exception of the Beach Club in Poipoo (sp??) Very beautiful! Anyway, overall we had a great time, and if we have the opportunity, we'll be back again!
