We wanted to visit this island and as we could do half our six night vacation using Marriott points, we decided on this resort. I am not a fan of large, family style resorts and thankfully this was not over-run with loud adults and screaming children. Although the hotel was, apparently, full, it it did not feel like it. People were putting their towels on the loungers at dawn, but it was not necessary and we loved the grass area between the pool and the beach which was quieter but still convenient for either water we wanted to slip in to!

The restaurants were great and although we did make reservations each evening, I don't think it was essential. The wines were good, the food was great, and the wait staff were charming. The front desk staff did seem to lack the "aloha spirit" (try smiling!) but everyone else could not be more friendly and helpful. The sushi bar had some of the best sushi I have had. The pool bar had great, light lunch snacks and kept the drinks flowing.

Our room had wonderful views and was pretty central, some of the towers seemed bit of a trek from the center of the hotel. The interiors are somewhat dated, but i don't expect contemporary "W-hotel" style in Hawaii, and our room was clean, with a king bed and a sofa and desk, and was perfectly acceptable. The view certainly helped.

Nine out of ten for wi-fi in most of the hotel (but only by our balcony, it dropped it once half way in the room), which I didn't have to pay for on my macbook, but my husband had to on his i-phone!

One tip - ignore the weather forecasts! The rain will come and go when it feels like it, but it is refreshing and brief during the day and dramatic at night. It didn't ruin anything we were doing outside at all and keeps the island looking so beautiful, lush and green.

Second tip - if you get bored by the pool/beach and fancy a 2-hour hike, head out around the peninsula to the lighthouse - a great walk, not very challenging and across some dramatic lava, private beaches and spectacular views.

Overall, we both really needed a relaxing break and enjoyed our stay in this hotel - I am hard to please, so that says a lot!

  • Liked — The setting - beautiful, beach and pool close to eachother. Not too loud.
  • Disliked — The spa was not a real spa, just a few massage rooms and a waiting bench outside!

We stayed for four nights in an oceanview room. We had been staying at timeshare on the other side of the island that we were not so impressed with so we drove to Marriott and they had rooms available so we booked 4 days! The room was on the 24th floor. The view was breathtaking; we could see the pool and the beach. The only downside of the oceanview room was that the balcony was in the full sun in the afternoon when we like to sit and have a cocktail.

The food at Duke's was good, reasonable as you could have your fish prepared in any way you liked, came with a side dish and a slad bar for around $29 per person. I loved the macadamia crusted opah! The pool grill was not that good--standard burger, sandwiches, caeser salad. The sandwiches come alone, if you want fries it is $3 more. We ate at the main restaurant for buffet of crab legs and prime rib; pretty pricey but also good.

The service was wonderful. The pool is just awesome and there are five hot tubs at the head of the pool. The beach was nice.

The rooms were ok, but I did notice that some areas of the hotel were a little run down. The elevators were filthy and the bathroom at the end of the beach was in horrible condition.

The spa is just a tiny little area with rooms for massage and treatments; no wet area. I did have a facial and it was just ok.

If you are a smoker be aware that you cannot smoke on the property at all. There are 2 designated smoking ashtrays on the beach. I saw alot of people smoking on the lawn area near the beach.

We had a great time just lounging by the pool. Be sure to see the Napali coastline!

Although the hotel grounds are beautiful.. everything else in this hotel is outdated or "fair". We booked a "honeymoon" room and were shocked to find an outdated, moldy smelling below average space. We attempted to get something better and received bad service from the guest services rep and manager- and nothing changed. The hotel also seemed understaffed throughout- especially in bar areas. Last, this is not a romantic space- it is geared to families. I do not recommend this for any honeymooners.

We loved the Marriott, we stayed for 5 nights. We had a wonderful time. It was our Anniversary. We were upgraded to a ocean view room, it was beautiful. We were sent 3 gifts 1basket of goodies a plate of fruit and a small bottle of wine. We were surprised, it made us feel good. The room was very small but the view was wonderful. We did have a large balcony with a patio table and 2 chairs. In the room we had a small table and two chairs with a coffee pot and free refills each day. The hotel is older but kept very clean. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We loved Duke's Barefoot Bar right on the beach walk in front of hotel. The food is good and reasonable, the hula pie is yummy! We ate here 4 times Duke's up stairs for dinner is also wonderful with a great salad bar and good prices. The pool is one of the largest on the Island with 5 whirlpools. Ocean is right next to the pool with free lounge chairs. Quite a few restaurants with in walking distance of the hotel. Anchor Cove is with in walking distance of the hotel with higher priced stores. ABC is ok for drinks gifts etc.. and better prices at the Cove. Only 7 minutes away is Kukui Grove, it has a Mc Donalds for the litte ones. K- Mart great for cheaper gifts, postcard. You will pay about 1/2 the price for the same things at the local stores and hotels. Behind the Kukui Grove is a food store and Cosco's. Poipu about 35 minutes away. Princeville is about 45 miuntes. The hotel is at a great location for getting around the Island. There is a Hilo Hatties a Hawaiian store and a Wall- mart about 12 minutes from the hotel. We heard the hotel is being done over later this year. We will return in a minute as long as the prices don't go too high for this great place. We had a wonderful time just the way it is.

We stayed at the Marrriott for our honeymoon in a pool view ground level room. We had no problems with noise whatsoever and our room was decent, not great. This resort is in a great location near the airport which makes it very convenient, but really only caters to families with young children. The breakfast buffet was included in our package, but the food was quite poor. There are 2 restaurants on the premises, Dukes which was good but pricey, and an Italian place that was very good and much more reasonable on prices. All in all, it was not a great value for the price.

I would definitely recommend going to Kauai, but I would not stay at the Marriott, unless you are traveling with young kids and dont plan on leaving the resort often. The property was nice, but didn't lend itself to a romantic feel. I would not recommend this property for a honeymoon.
