“Great stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Large resort with great pools and excellent beach access for skimmers, boogies boarders, stand-up surfers and surfers. Swimmable with no snorkeling. Central location - very convenient. Family oriented but big enough to find your social niche. Cell phone coverage poor, but most of island has this issue. Ample parking but expensive. Elevators slow and one is very often under repair (two years in a row). Second stay and will stay again.

The resort/beach club is well positioned for sight seeing and relaxing. Nestled on it's own beach in a little harbour right next to the airport (has its own shuttle bus running every 15 minutes between the air port and resort). This place is easy to get to and travel to and from.

It is smack int he middle between North Shore sights and Waimea Canyon. Allow roughly and hour to drive to these sights yourself. There is not a lot of traffic (if you miss the peak periods) but lots of one way bridges (going to north shore) and bendy , hilly roads. Sorry of track there for a bit. There is parking available at the resort but there is a charge. You also need a pass from the front desk.

THe room has a fantastic view but the interior is a little dated. Still nice though and clean. We had a one bedroom apartment. The bedroom was huge and the living area small. We had two bathrooms, a fold out bed, two tbs, a small kitchen (just a microwave for heating/cooking food and a dishwasher for dishes). In the kitchen for this room dont bank on cooking your own meals. You can only really do breakfast and maybe sandwhich lunches.

On food there are about 5 places to eat plus room service. To be honest for the price we found the food average at best and over priced. If you head down to the beach and walk to your right and head out of the resort there is a small shopping district type place that has some restaurants in it that we were told had good food for cheap prices (we did not use them as we were out and about most of the time). My advice only get room service or eat on site your first or last day there, every other time eat while you are out and about. Also there is no laundry facilities in the room (one of the workers said this is due to retrofitting laws in Kauai and they are working on eventually doing it). There is a shared laundry down stairs though.

The views from our room we amazing and really cancelled out everything else negative I had (Including the sofa that seemed to want to make you fall on the floor). We had an ocean facing room but from what I saw nearly all the rooms would have had good views.

The pool is huge with water fountains spouting everywhere. There is a children's pool which is just a shallow pool (half a foot deep) with a water slide. Not imaginative but does the job really well. Our little guy loved it. Speaking of swimming the beach is fantastic; shallow with a gentle surf. Was great to swim in the sea.

The service was good but we found some things a little hit and miss. Being Marriott Time Share owners we normally get a discount card on arrival. This time we had to specifically ask for it. The found the discounts weren't really great or usable (for our needs there is a discount on helicopter rides for example if your up for it but not on car rental which is what we did).

On site there is a car rental place and a helicopter ride place. Nice and handy but warning can be busy first thing in the morning! Also on the beach there is standup boarding and surf board rental/classes plus snorkle hire.

There is a huge Koi pond near reception and you can feed the fish every morning at 9am on the dot. Little kids (and adults) just loved this!

The resort its self is a little confusing to navigate around and very spread out. From where we were it was about a 5 min walk from the room to anywhere in the resort. Not a huge problem but there is no direct routes as such.

There is no real shopping places nearby. As mentioned previously there is a small mall type thing with in walking distance, that has some food places (restaurants) and some shops like snorkle hire etc (we didn't really explore it to be honest). The nearby (about 2kms away but no obvious way to walk there) shopping centre Kukui; was not great and honestly can be missed. It had a a small Macy's, Sears and Kmart. Poipu looked like more of the place to go for souvenir shopping and more upmarket souvenirs/clothes.

A great little resort that should service your needs especially with sight seeing. While over all I would say this was a great stay there were a few things that missed their mark for us and thus the 4 out of 5 rating. But I would recommend people stay here.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view room.

We were actually in the grand Residence condos on the same property. The accommodations were excellent but the best was the pool that was a great size for me 3 year old twins to play and a small short water slide for them too!

My family has been to this resort twice in 5 years and we will be returning! The location is LOVELY for several reasons: 10 minutes from the airport (no, we have NEVER experienced loud airport noise), LOCATION is perfect... no more than an hours drive to anywhere on the island as opposed to if you stay in the Princeville region, for example, WONDERFUL staff... very friendly and accomodating although we never need to ask for much! If your wish is to stay at the resort as oppossed to venturing out (resist this temptation... SO much to do and see!) you are set as there is a small shopping area/mall within walking distance as many restaurants within walking distance. There is also a WONDERFUL show on Mondays right at the resort that I highly recommend! 5 years ago the attraction was the pool... it's a seller by itself. But after staying there once there are so many other reasons to choose this location... you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Any view that has 'pool' in it will also be at least a partial ocean view!

Great pool, very affordable, good restaurants. Check in was stressful because they said they didn't have the rollaway bed we'd requested months in advance. After trying to decide whether to stay or not, we checked in, went to the room and, voile, the rollaway was there. Housekeeping did not, evidently, communicate with checkin. After that, all went very well.

My husband and I traded our time share for 1 week at this property. At first it seemed huge and confusing, especially as we arrived after dark, but by next day we were finding our way around very easily. The layout is confusing with 3 different sections and specific elevators for different areas. We were fortunate to be given an ocean-front room on the 5th floor of the Kilohana Wing with a wonderful view of Kalapaki Beach. As this wing was the original building on the property, the suite was a little dated and, unfortunately, we found a couple of bugs as well as soiled linen on the bed on inspection of the suite. This situation was handled fairly well by housekeeping, although they insisted they did not have bugs in their hotel. My husband had already killed and flushed the 2 bugs so we had no proof, but this hotel is in the middle of a jungle - bugs go with the territory. We had no further problems at all.
There are many restaurants on the property. We found the restaurants right inside the hotel to be somewhat expensive; however, we had a few very pleasant meals at Kukui's right beside the pool. We found Dukes and Cafe Portofina more reasonable, especially Duke's where we ate many meals.
The suite itself was actually 2 adjoining rooms; however, we only had a small kitchen with microwave, toaster, coffee maker and dishwasher so we just prepared simple meals and no dinners. Since my husband is on a secial diet, we prefer to do our own cooking, but this was only possible for breakfast and lunch. We each had our own bathroom which was great. The furniture was somewhat large and "clunky" and old, but we have noticed since the downturn in the economy this seems to be the norm.
There are beautiful gardens surrounding all the buildings (and on some of the roof-tops) and a large koi pond (rather overstocked) in the large courtyard in the middle of the main building. The pool is very large and enjoyable with fountains and 5 hot tubs. There is also a small children's pool with slide. The beach is great for walking and swimming (some surfing too) and there are 2 beach volleyball courts as well as many lounge chairs available, both at the pool and beach.
Kauai has many wild chickens and roosters and this property was no exception. I rather enjoyed being awakened every morning just before dawn by a "cock-a-doodle-do" but I know that would not be to everyone's taste.
A hint - if you arrive after dark and are driving from the airport, take to road (Rice Road, although you can't read the sign at that time of day) pointing to Poipu and not the road marked for Lihue. Also, if you prefer a newer suite, ask for the Haupu Wing which will have a view of the pool.
All in all we had a very relaxing and enjoyable time at this resort. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the hotel is only 1 mile from the airport (no airport noise though). I would recommend this property for couples and families but not for solo travellers.

The Marriott is really nice. A great deal for Kauai. If I had to the main hotels for value I would place Marriott, Hyatt, St. Regis, Sheraton. The Marriott has a huge pool for the kids, it has it's own beach, and then it has Dukes. I'm a big Duke fan, I drink their Mai Tais everywhere I go. This Dukes had 4* Mai Tais. Not bad , there is another place on the island that is even better. Sorry I can't remember. Back to the Marriott, it's clean, decent size rooms, nice gym, etcc..If I wanted the best upgrade I would stay at the Hyatt. If I wanted to splurge at Kauai, I would stay half the trip in Poipou at the Hyatt, and half the trip at the St. Regis in Princeville.
