“A decent alternative”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013 via mobile

We found this place thanks to Lonely Planet and Trip Advisor. We stayed for four nights and did not regret our choice as we had been looking for a reasonable alternative to all the overpriced Kauai hotels. Obviously, this is not a five-star place and the interior is a little worn out. Nonetheless, the Inn has its own charm, our room was clean and tidy and the staff is lovely and helpful. The walls are a little thin though, and you might hear the main street nearby and the tiny waterfall in the back. We had our sleep anyway. The location close to the beautiful beach and the airport made it a nice choice especially for our short stay. We would come back.

The ladies that run this place are fantastic. Friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to make the stay pleasant.

The three things that made this hotel great:
1) walking distance to the beach
2) walking distance to a Shave Ice place
3) there was a waterfall outside my window!

I highly recommend it. It you are looking for a Ritz Carlton, don't stay here. If you want a great experience, this is the place..

We booked on line for one night since we were arriving in Lihue in the evening and didn't want to make the trip north to Princeville that night in the dark. Besides, friends were flying in from Australia the next day and we planned to meet them.
We loved the place and the location. We would have been happy to stay at the Garden Island Inn for our entire time on the island. Maybe next time.
The Inn itself is an older property, but very well maintained, very clean and very colorful. The decor is what some would call funky, I guess. Lots of color and artwork. We loved it. We were given a complimentary room upgrade on the second level facing the ocean...a 1 bedroom suite with a small kitchen and dining area. Terrific!
The Inn is located directly across the road from one of the nicest and most popular beaches on the island, Kalapaki. The inn provides beach towels and water toys at no additonal cost for guests.
There are several good restaurants within walking distance of the inn, as well as a small shopping plaza. The Feral Pig restaurant was good, and to our surprise Duke's Canoe Club down at the beach, associated with the Marriott resort which is right there, was delightful and affordable for lunch. For breakfast, try the Kalapaki Beach Hut, a unique red wooden structure popular with the locals.

Room Tip: This is a two level inn with no elevator. Guests with mobility or health problems (or tons of lugga...

I had a few days to potter around the island prior to moving over to the St. Regis for a few nights in Princeville for a meeting. I found this hotel on this site (of course), and glad I did! It was just myself and I stayed in room 117 (perfect for single or a couple - same size as a standard 4* business hotel room - other rooms looked much larger and designed for families etc). I think everyone else sums it up nicely - a very nice small family run hotel.

If you are looking for a 5* St. Regis resort style stay - go the St. Regis, this is not that sort of place and is not why i am 5 starring this review. This hotel is definitely for the travellers who have an independent spirit and don't need waited on hand and foot - it is similar to a very nice motel, and I give it 5 stars in this category. Why? Location is perfect, slap bang in the middle of the island (road wise - one main road) so it is a great base for exploring, 7/11 style store over the road and some decent restaurants/bars in walking distance, a shopping centre (large K-Mart, Costco etc) just up the road, a great beach over the road, microwave, fridge and sink in room very useful, reliable good internet connection (no fee! hurrah!), comfortable bed, tropical furniture in great condition, very friendly staff, good knowedgable of the island, lots of equipment you could borrow (from golf gear to snorkel gear to DVDs), aircon unit which you dont really need (i live in the caribbean and i am an air-con junkie usually) as you will not be there during the day and at night its nice and cool - overall very good value indeed. You might get the occassional mozzie or ant in your unit - you are in the tropics, its going to happen. The road can be busy (there is a port close by - think it is the main food/supplies port for the island) but i was not disturbed by it. Overall i give this place a great big thumbs up as simply I had a great stay.

Looking for a non-resort place to have as a base on island? Give this place a try. I will be returning when next on island.

The Garden Island Inn is definitely our kind of place: small, family owned and friendly. The evening we arrived in Kauai there was a Tsunami warning and we weren't able get to the Inn until around 1:00 a.m. Though our arrival was so late, the staff had made arrangements to get us into our room once we arrived there. We immediately felt at home in the spotless, comfy room. The staff were just amazing - they were always so friendly and helpful the whole time we were there. The inn was decorated with murals and paintings done by a local artist which makes the inn super individual and colourful. The garden surroundings were so beautiful (we took many a picture) and extremely well kept. We can't wait to get back there!

I must admit, I was a little hesitant to stay here but all fears were dismissed when we pulled into the Garden Island Inn after a long day of flying. It is colorful, fun and funky. We arrived the day after Christmas, so we were lucky to have the inn decorated with Christmas lights and decorations. Our room, 117, was on the 3rd floor, and had a nice view of the water across the street. Small "kitchenette" in room, with king bed, shower and balcony. Coffee was provided in the room, but in the lobby you can find assorted snacks throughout the day. The fresh juice in the morning was heavenly! There are chairs, boogie boards, towels, beach mats ... you name it, they have it for your day at the beach. No need to purchase any of those items while on your trip. I would suggest grabbing them earlier in the morning to ensure you have to use.

Everything about our 2 night stay at the Garden Island Inn was perfect. We had an early morning flight to Oahu, and the inn is conveniently located less than 5 minutes away from the airport. Made everything run so much smoother. There are restaurant and shops within walking distance and the harbor area across the street is fantastic to watch the sunrise.

We will be back! Forget booking with the high price resorts - this is the 'real' Kaua'i!

My sister and I traveled to Hawaii from Australia on holiday, and looking for affordable accommodation I found the Garden Island Inn. After a long flight we were greeted by a lovely happy smile and a beautiful Koi pond at reception! Our room was not ready so we were given a free upgrade! Everything we needed or had forgotten was supplied free of charge- snorkels, boogie boards, towels and even DVDs to watch. The hotel was always clean and it was lovely to have nice flowers everyday! The location could not be better, there are shops super close and a pleasant walk. Whenever we needed help we were given help, e.g directions to Kipu falls! We were also advised on which activities to enjoy, e.g tubing and cable gliding (so much fun!)
I cannot explain how much I enjoyed staying here but I must advise that if you are looking for clean, enjoyable, affordable and secure accommodation I believe this is truly the best, and even if I had enough money to stay elsewhere I still would choose here over a fancy hotel for it's homeliness and beauty that echoes Kauai's own traits.
