“Excellent newcomer”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014 via mobile

We arrived early and got a nice table right away, they do not take reservations for parties of les than six.
The attractive menu complemented the tastefully designed interior. Acoustics were not great and not helped by the jazzy background music.
Service was excellent. Waiter was polite and accommodating to our two children splitting an entree.
The limited menu included standard Italian specialties, some pastas, pizza, risotto, and a couple of meat courses. Our choices were spaghetti with bolognese sauce, linguini with white truffle, pancetta cream sauce and risotto with local shrimp. All were very well prepared and presented. Focaccia with olive oil was on the table and very good.
We were glad to see this addition to limited tourist eateries around town. This is a refreshing change from others in town with their faux Polynesian menus.
It is also a suitable replacement for our old Italian favorite Pomodoro that closed this month.
We shall return,

“Great Atmosphere OK Food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2014

We happend on La Spezia after reading all the reviews. We were happy to get in with no wait. The atmosphere is really delightful, not a lot of tables but very nicely done. Service was OK. For not being too crowded, woudl have expected it to be a little better. The food was pretty average, no bad but i would not rave about it. The best thing was the appitizerser which were fantastic but main dishes had a lot to be desired. Maybe Italian food in Hawaii is different from the states. We did not have wine (after drinking all day) but they do seem to hae a wonderful wine selection.

“Great atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014 via mobile

We stopped in late one evening while driving by. It is an adorable little house and is very pretty inside . Not very many tables so were happy to get a seat. Wine the waiter chose for us was fantastic. The food was not the best Italian I have ever ate but it was still tasty. We liked the atmosphere and enjoyed our evening in this sleepy little town

“Potential yet to be realized”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

There are few tables in this nicely located and well-decorated restaurant. On a weekend night, we tried to visit but were in essence turned away by the long, long wait time. Since our house is on the same street, we decided to return Tuesday hoping for a lighter crowd and less wait time. No luck. We were told it would be about 20 minutes, but that turned into 50+ minutes. The cafe tables could have been organized better to accommodate the various groups awaiting tables, but there isn't a host/manager on duty to greet guests or to organize tables. The wait staff is busy, so you have to step up to workers to be noticed.
Cocktails were fair-to-good, but at the prices, you'd expect something memorable. Other than the price and name of "Tequila Mockingbird", my first drink was zzzzz. The "Ciao Bella" was an improvement. Get wine, you'll be happier. A small order of bread was provided with simple olive oil (non-seasoned).
My family ordered clams (which they really enjoyed), and they also enjoyed the mushroom soup very much. My Caesar salad was nothing but lettuce, small tomatoes, and mild dressing. Oh, there were also "freshly made croutons" but that turned out to be a few bread crumbs hidden beneath a leaf of lettuce. At $6 or $7, I anticipated a really well made salad. My wife's garden salad was similarly priced and similarly simple.
I tried a special dish of fettucini and chicken. The taste was fair, but the texture of the pasta was poor. Starchy and slightly overcooked, it took quite a bit of effort to eat, and half-way through the course, I considered not eating - - but I was starving! I can't recall what the rest of my family ordered, but they were generally pleased - though not gushing with praise. (Our meal three days earlier at Keoki's Paradise was BRILLIANT, and this was not quite comparable.)
For the price and wait, I would have expected better hosting, better drinks, and better food. Overall, though, I would likely give it another chance. I have been told the breakfast is excellent.

“Many good things.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

This is a place with a friendly atmosphere, some good food and good wine for a reasonable price. The appetizers are the best, and you can make a wonderful dinner with appetizers and wine alone. The restaurant is a very nice addition to the choices of restaurants on the south shore. When good food especially on vacation in Kauai can be very pricey, it is nice to be offered an alternative that delivers good atmosphere, good food and exceptionally friendly service for a reasonable price.
