“Excellent Honeymoon spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2009

I have stayed at precisely two Bed & Breakfasts in my life. After the first time, the weekend I proposed to my (now) wife, we decided that we were not Bed & Breakfast people... our host at that place was just a strange guy, the conversation was awkward, and he liked to use the word "snuggle." Not our thing.

But when we decided on Kauai for our honeymoon, we knew that B&B was the way to go for an affordable trip, and we are very glad we made that decision! The hosts at Hale Puka 'Ana were excellent - they gave us just the right amount of attention, and never used the word "snuggle." They also had all kinds of helpful information, directions, and supplies like coolers, umbrellas, beach chairs to lend out - all the kind of stuff that it would be a real pain to drag to Hawai'i. The breakfast was served during a large time-window so we didn't have to get up super early. And for all that, the price was still great.

As for location: let's face it, if you go to Kauai, you're going to rent a car, no two ways about it. So, while it's a bit of a drive to the Poipu beaches and snorkeling and restaurants, it doesn't take away from the experience. Kekaha itself is the best spot weather-wise on the island - no rain the entire time, and moderate temperature, too. In terms of things to do over there, it is the closest town to Polihale beach, which is exactly what you hope for on a trip to Kauai - an empty beach with miles of white sand, and Waimea canyon, with dozens of beautiful hiking trails.

All in all, the perfect honeymoon.

Jules and Patrick are awesome and beautiful hosts. This B/B place has the feeling of first class lodging- from the high count linens, soft/plush towels and very comfortable mattress- ohhhhh, this felt like heaven on earth. Very clean!!!!!! The array of breakfast food items is more than anyone can imagine. Even though they are "off" on Sunday morning- it was never a problem- with all the neat surprises Jules stocked in the small refrigerator in our room.
We stayed in Princeville for a few days and stayed at Hale Puka 'Ana for the last 3 days and it was just a perfect way to unwind a wonderful vacation- quiet, relaxing, the most beautiful lanai for breakfast and watching the birds was a bonus. Sometimes, the 2 friendly dogs joined us and they are the most behaved companions.
My husband was pleasantly surprised with the tiki hut cooking area. He loved cooking our dinners there- very complimentary of all the things a cook would need. This area became our social gathering with the other 2 couples staying at the same time. What a wonderful time we had.
Jules and Patrick- we can't say enough good things about you two. We would definitely recommend your place to our friends.

We stayed at Hale Puka'Ana for three nights in March after hiking the Na'Pali coast. The stay could not have been more perfect!! Jules and Patrick were so warm and friendly, giving us great advice and tips, but also totally giving us our space. Our favorite part of the stay was the fully stocked outdoor kitchen / tiki hut. On Patrick's advice, we got the most delicious fresh fish at a market just down the street, and cooked it on their grill. A glass of wine and watching the sun set over the ocean and we were completely set!! We hope someday to get back!

Great B&B with amenities not normally included. You can cook your own meals out at the 'Tiki Hut' in the back yard. Gas grill and also electric cooktop if you want. Dishes, utensils and cookware there for your use - awesome! Most excellent location on the SUNNY side of the Garden Island. Surrouned by amazing hiking opportunities, boating opportunities, whale watching and sandy beaches - go there! Patrick & Jules are great hosts and you will be pleased with the rooms. The pics on the website do not do justice, they have been updated and look great!

If you like the beach, the sun, great sunsets, easy access to Waimea Canyon, seeing whales spouting in the distance over breakfast, listening to the waves from a very comfortable room/suite, and wonderful hospitality, then you'll love this B&B owned and operated by Patrick and Jules McLean. We stayed mid-week for 3-days and enjoyed every minute of it. What we really appreciated was the relative quiet compared to the hustle and bustle of the big hotel areas. The beach is literally across the road and is reportedly one of the longest (and cleanest) white sand beaches in the islands, if not the world. A great place to visit and one we will undoubtedly visit again. As a matter of fact, we have already recommended this location to several friends and familty members.

I think our favorite memory is our greeting from Jules when we arrived. She opened the door and we felt like she was greeting us as her best friends! What a genuine smile! She had leis for us and after a tour of the beautiful grounds we went up to the common area and were served fruity smoothies, sat on the lanai and began our relaxing stay. A terrific variety of breakfast food is served 6 mornings(Sunday we went to Grinds on Patrick's recommendation). Coffee, tea and water is always available. Every morning Jules or Patrick would ask if we needed any suggestions or assistance with anything.
Our room on the 1st floor was just perfect and our own private outdoor sitting area was lovely. Just right for bird watching & roosters too, listening to the ocean and star gazing. Just across the street is a beautiful beach where the sun sets! A very accomodating Tiki bar/kitchen is available for guest use, wish we could have stayed longer! Hale Puka'ana is at the base of the road to Waimea Canyon- The Grand Canyon of the Pacific! Spectacular!! We had fun in town at a local festival and enjoyed watching surfers. At the Waimea Canyon store make sure you pick up some Black Mountain Premium coffee- outstanding!
Mahalo Jules & Patrick for sharing your spectacular home and island with us!
Our only regret is that we didn't get a picture with Jules when we left- "Shaka" Jules :)

The hospitality was surperb. When we arrived, we were given a tour of the bed and breakfast. When we reached the lanai, we were offered a freshly made smoothie. Breakfast is served during a specified time, however they are willing to work wiith you if the time frame does not meet your needs. In fact, we were going to be getting up extremly early the first morning for an atv ride and Jules offered to put together some food that we could take with us. They are willing to help in anyway they can to make your vacation be the best it can be. For the beach, towels are provided as well as lawn chairs and boogie boards. They have a really neat tikki bar on the front lawn for your use including the use of a grill.

The room we had was clean, spacious and comforatable. We had a tv, radio, dorm size referigerator, full size closet, dresser, large bathroom, and private access to our room from the outside as well as from the main entry. With this being a bed and breakfast, you also have access to the living area that has a large screen tv and the lanai with a view to the ocean.

The location is wonderful because it is in a quiet area and the beach is within walking distance.

The best thing we liked is sitting on the lanai watching the whales and the sunsets. The owners make you feel welcome and at home. There isn't anything we didn't like.

We will stay here everytime we come to Kauai. This is a great place to stay whether you are vacationing or on business.
