We stayed for one week at the Aloha Beach Hotel in mid-November. I was a little nervous to stay here after reading the reviews, but did anyway because we got a ridiculously good deal. And while there wasn't anything terrible about our stay, I definitly wish we would have spent a bit more for a nicer place.
So first the pros: the place was very clean and quiet, staff seems nice though we didn't ask any hard questions, the lobby was nice, and the location wasn't bad on Lydgate Beach. And they upgraded us to an ocean view, so obviously, they try to give you the best room possible. And there were no parking or "resort fee," which seems to be a rarity in Hawaii, and I appreciated not having any surprises on our bill at the end.
As for the cons, this place has seen better days. Things were pretty worn down and shabby looking, and the beds and linens were pretty bad. The beds are really hard, so if you've got a bad back or are particularly sensitive about where you sleep you might have a problem. I was also really glad I had brought my own pillow because the ones they supplied were worn down and musty smelling. We also had some maintence issues in that we couldn't open the sliding door out to the pool, and our tv didn't work for that first night (they did fix it fairly promptly, but some of the channels were still pretty fuzzy).
We also tried there hot tub, and it wasn't very hot and the jets barely worked. Also tried the hotels restaurant and weren't particularly impressed. We had the breakfast buffet one day at their restaurant, and I didn't think it was worth the money. It was a really small buffet, no pancakes or french toast or anything along those lines. But there are lots of restaurants close by that are much better.
Bottom line, if you've got a little extra money, I'd maybe spring for a different place. But if staying here is the only way you can afford Kauai, and you're not planning on spend a lot of time in your room, it is bearable.
