We just got back from staying 4 nights at the ABR. We were on the Big Island 1st staying at the Outgrigger Keahoa (see other review of that hotel). We booked the smallest, cheapest room but they upgraded us from garden to ocean view & a little larger room. The room itself was o.k...carpet worn & discolored around the walls from the moisture, ceiling needed to be repainted (could see where all the beams were probably again from the moisture), the furniture was pretty worn...holes in couch, mattress seemed pretty old, curtains didn't open/close easily, etc, but overall we didn't mind because we were only in our room to sleep & then we were out & about all day. Shower was small & cramped stand-up, but water pressure was good & water was hot. We did see a plate left in hallway from roomservice for about 1-2 days. Never saw any bugs, though. Maid service was good & always friendly.
Never ate at the restaraunt. Good drinks at the bar & nice view from balcony there. Staff was helpful overall. Used concierge to find good snorkel location. They do have a timeshare/expedia desk in lobby to book excursions as well. If you use them, they will give you a discount on the activities when you tour their timeshare up the road. Get the most for that though! We only got $100 off helicopter ride. We spoke to other couples who got 2-for-1 helicopter, 2-for-1 luau & 2-for-1 snorkel/boat/Napali boat cruise for doing the timeshare tour. If not interested in touring the timeshare, call direct to activities to book for best rates or check with concierge.
The roosters will wake you up each morning! Don't feed them or they will hang out under your room. We learned the hard way. 2 Pools, both pretty small but nice & hot tub was HOT, but refreshing. Location is pretty good on island...just south of traffic, just north of airport, about 1/2 way from North end & 1/2 way from South/West end. You can walk to Lyndgate park from hotel property. Park had good kiddie pool, good snorkel area. Fish are used to being fed, so feel free to bring some fish food for them & they will go crazy around you.
Overall, a good solid room for the price as long as you are not picky.
