“Just ok.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

This hotel has so much potential. The grounds are gorgeous but you can tell that it’s been awhile since there have been any renovations. Our room smelled of mold from the second we walked in and the bath/shower needs improvement. Our linen also had a funny smell to it. The front desk staff was just ok. I love working out while on vacation and the gym was just awful. Luckily the beach was outside and I was able to run but if you don’t want to work out outside you are out of luck. The perks of staying here however are the location to great restaurants, hikes and great beaches. I loved that they had a fridge so we were able to have cereal for breakfast. Again with some renovations to the rooms this place could be a four star hotel.

Great price for a good location in Kapaa. Easy drive to Poipo and the westside and easy drive up to Princeville and the north shore. Certainaly not fancy, but pretty clean and very nice staff. We have stayed all over Kauai and for the money we will come back.

Spent four nights here last week and was very happy with the hotel. We weren't expecting much as it is one of the least expensive hotels on the island, but were pleasantly surprised.

The only thing negative to say isn't really the hotel's fault. The wild chickens/roosters on the island start their calls early and don't shut up for hours, making it impossible to sleep in. so if they could somehow sound proof the tombs more it would be better.

Other than that, the hotel was clean, in a gorgeous location right up on a beach. Also next to a park for little ones, and an area of the beach that is blocked by a cove for younger or inexperienced swimmers.

We will be staying here again, and would recommend it to anyone not looking for a fancy place, but an affordable nice place.

Due to differing flight schedules, I was spending a night in Maui before connecting with my family in Kauai for our 3 days on Kauai's North Shore. As such, they needed someplace inexpensive and close to the airport to crash for one night.

If that is what you are looking for, then I guess this hotel will do. The location is great, just 5 minutes to the airport, and near a very pretty beach. When we first pulled up, I was impressed, but upon closer inspection, the place is really run down and in need of a refresh. The walls were nicked and dirty, the room, although "okay" was not a place that I would recommend to anyone. It just felt old, tired and a bit grungy.

This hotel is by the beach and you can walk for miles and miles on unpopulated beach. However, the hotel is worn and feels a bit iffy. I disappointed there were no balconies. There are balconey doors that open but they are fronted by rusty railings. The AC did not work well. The dresser drawer wouldn't close. We had an ant problem (they quickly sprayed for this but it still left us feeling itchy. The halls and stairs were not kept as clean as they could be. The bathroom was not clean. Each day the maid said "You don't need any cleaning today, right?" YES we did!! I felt like she was trying to get out of it. There are rock gardens with waterfalls that could be nice but the fountains aren't working leading to an air of disrepair. Their is a snack bar with reasonable prices but it is only open for a few hours in the afteroon. The restaurant is VERY pricey and slow. We didn't have a car and were basically stranded because this hotel is isolated. There are restaurants about a 20 minute walk away but you have to walk on the edge of a very fast highway - there are no sidewalks for much of the way. If you have a "camping" mindset and rent a car so you can do day trips, you will be okay. The pools were nice. The lobby was nice. There was a book exchange stand which was nice. A complete overhaul is needed but if that can't be done....keeping things cleaner and fixing the broken things would help.

Room Tip: We had an ocean view room but it's not like the ocean is right there.....there is a big green sp...

Pros:
Convenient location on island
Large rooms
Clean

Cons:
Just not that refined to be anything but average
Fitness room worthless
$10 daily resort fee for...?
Showing its age with wear and dated
The beach is a public beach across the street and is small.

That's why I gave it an average review! The lady checking people in was not very inviting and rather rude to everyone that crossed her path. The hotel is run down and very old feeling. The grounds were probably wonderful 20 years ago..not so much anymore. Our room was clean but smelled musty the whole time. Whether we opened the patio door but the room never aired out so we just had to get used to it. The best part about the property was that it was right across the street from the Smith Family Luau and the bartender serving happy hour drinks at the Aston. But what can you expect for $100 a night in Kauai?

Thank you for stay with us at the Aston Aloha Beach Hotel and taking the time to comment on your experience.
It is to our dismay that we did not meet your expectations during your stay. We take pride in servicing our guest to the highest standard and apologize that our service level was less than perfect.

We have addressed the front desk check in issue with the agent on duty and I can assure you that our check in efficiencies has since been corrected with our agent. We have completed some of our upgrades with new linen, towels, and beds and are currently working on Wi-Fi for the entire property. We are fortunate to have a great centrally located property with the best swimming area on the island of Kauai.

Again, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused during your stay here at the Aston Aloha Beach Hotel.

We hope to see you again on Kauai in the near future, and that you will return to the Aston Aloha Beach Hotel.

Aloha pumehana (with fond professional regards)
