We stayed at the Aloha Beach resort twice: one night in a cabin at the beginning of our stay and one night in a basic hotel room at the end of the stay. The cabin was worn and overpriced (smelled a bit musty when we first arrived and we swore there was a dragon living in the toilet) but the room at $108 was a very good deal. The location right on the beach, particularly with the swimming area at Lydgate was great.
We don't have kids but I would highly recommend this place for anyone that does (and those that don't but want an inexpensive centrally located place). There is an amazing wood playhouse / maze about 1km south of the resort. I've never seen anything like it. The snorkeling at Lydgate is as safe as you can get with lots of relatively tame fish.
The location is also really close to lots of dining and shopping options while still being quite and it's a good jumping off point to explore the rest of the island.

Clean rooms, great beach nearby, renovations nearly completed. Pool was being cleaned, smaller pool was open. Great location for exploring the rest of the island. If you want a 5-star hotel- then pay for one- this is not it. We were very happy with the service.

After camping 1 night on Anini Beach Park...
I decided that I wanted to sleep on a bed and not on the ground the next night...
I booked this hotel through hotwire for $96/night + tax. It was a perfectly decent hotel...the room was big and included a fridge and microwave. It's a little far off from the Coconut Marketplace in Kapaa...but it worked for what we needed it for.
The ocean view pool with the hot tub was closed...but the small pool was open. There are no Lanai's, but sliding screen doors. I noticed that the whole bottom floor of the hotel was being remodeled, there was a ton of old furniture piled up against the windows.
I wouldn't want to stay here for more than a night or two...but it worked for our situation!

My family went to Kauai for Christmas and had planned on staying at the Aloha Beach Resort for 9 days. We arrived on Cristmas eve. Although the rooms are large, they are downright depressing in color and furniture. We were in two of the "renovated" rooms. The shower stalls were small and were those plastic prefabricated things. No lanai to sit out on. Furthermore, the large pool and hot tub were closed. There was a tiny pool that was open. The beach is beautiful for walks but too rough to go in the water. Lydgate Park is right next door and they have small pools enclosed by lava rocks. But it didn't look inviting and we didn't even go in. We left the next day to stay at the Marriott Resort in Lihue which had 5 hot tubs, a huge pool, a beach you could swim at, and several good restaurants. My family all thinks that they should tear down the Aloha Beach Resort and build a new hotel there in its place.
