Our friends own time shares at the Pono Kai. Along with our adult son and 12 year old granddaughter, we were very fortunate to stay in a 2 bedroom unit in Bldg. C. We had beautiful sunrise views over the ocean and were lulled to sleep at night by the sounds of the surf. Our unit was clean and very well equipped with a large kitchen and two full bath rooms. Lots of storage and comfy beds with lovely tropical decor. The carpeting seemed new. The balcony off the living room had one chaise, along with a table and chairs. There was a large, flat screen tv in the living room/dining area and a small one in the master suite. The one drawback is that the second bedroom is not air conditioned.
The grounds are well kept and include a lovely koi pond. The pool and spa are adequate, although dated. There are shuffleboard courts and bocci ball, too, that our granddaughter especially liked. We all enjoyed a morning biking the trail that runs along the beach directly adjacent to the Pono Kai. Its an easy ride with outstanding views - take towels and enjoy one of the practically deserted beaches along the way. They are so much nicer than the beach by the Pono Kai. It's a five minute walk to the bike rental store in Kapaa where we snagged 4 well maintained beach cruisers from a friendly staff. You can also drive 5 minutes to great beaches.
We loved being able to walk to the friendly little town of Kaapa. Enjoyed chatting with Ken, the fabulous coffee barista at the Ono Market - ask him for directions to the best Hawaiian shave ice on the island. Had a fabulous breakfast at The Country Kitchen.
One caution about staying at the Pono Kai- be careful if you rent a unit directly from an owner. We noticed that some of them are not as well maintained as the time shares. Kudos to the entire staff- extremely cordial and helpful. Don't miss meeting the concierge crew on Sunday morning for coffee, donuts and give-aways..
The Pono Kai is not a luxury resort -no restaurants, not even a bar; but neither is it overcrowded. We had a lovely stay and would definitely return.
