Pono Kai was a pleasant surprise. I have read some reviews that reference the units being "dated" and I was worried. Our unit was in good shape and held a tropical/beach feel. We were had 6 peopl in a 1 bedroom loft unit. We fit fine, but 1 bathroom was a challenge. We all enjoyed our trip. We were in building F and had a perfect open view of the ocean from our lanai. Pono Kai is close to everything and there is a bike/walking/running path along the ocean that is perfect for a stroll or several mile bike/run. The staff at Pono Kai was great and do not miss their activities orientation on Sundays and Thursdays....the activities staff brings in tour companies from all over the island and they help you see and understand your activity options. During our orientation experience over 75% of the people in attendance had their names drawn for a 2 for 1 on a variety of activities.
We would definately go back to Pono Kai and loved Kauai. The rooms and the buildings are a little dated but they are in good condition. The pool area is nice, fairly small but nice. You rent snorkeling equipment and boogie boards on site and the concierges were GREAT. The grounds are beautifully maintained and there are croquet, bocce ball, and a putting green on the property as well. There are several newer grills on the grounds that we used 3 out of the 7 days we were at Pono Kai.
There are shops, groceries, tour companies, etc. all within a short drive or walk.
Housekeeping was also great - friendly, prompt, and they come to change towels every other day.
